The Word About Town
Issue 21, October 2017
It's been a busy few months here at Mum's guide to with the arrival of our new UK site and two new Mum's guide to sites in Romford and Bournemouth.  The UK site features articles and blogs about family life including activities, health & wellbeing, education, finances, food and more.  We hope you enjoy it!

So, now the kids have returned to school and nursery and the daily routine is back on track, it must be time for us all to take a breather and enjoy the delights of Autumn before the craziness of Christmas is upon us again!  Grab some fresh air with the kids and marvel at the beautiful autumnal colours all around us, gather conkers and acorns, and then snuggle in for the evening with hot chocolates and blankets.  Bliss!

Then, when you are feeling relaxed and refreshed, if you need to you can turn your attention to new schools and nurseries for next September.  It doesn't have to be a daunting process.  Take a look at our Education and Childcare Section, and in particular our School and Nursery Open Days page.  Choosing may still be difficult, but at least you'll have those all-important dates in one place.  Good luck!

Finally, we just wanted to mention a fantastic new initiative at St Matthew's Care Home in Redbourn.  They are bringing the generations together. Every Wednesday morning from 10.30am parents & toddlers are invited to join a very special club with the residents of St Matthew's.  There will be singing, dancing and chatting!  For more information please see our website.

st hilda's - the best start in life

“At the end of each year we have looked back and commented on our daughter’s year - always describing it as filled with challenges, hard work, motivating activities, fun, warmth and ending up with a happy girl making lots of progress.  We can leave St Hilda’s confident in the knowledge that she is fully prepared for the new experiences and challenges ahead. A huge thank you to all of you.”

It is always satisfying to know that a child has moved on to Senior School prepared for the next stage of their education and life beyond.

We certainly believe that our all-round, nurturing and fulfilling learning experience equips our pupils with the passport to their next destination. Whether pursuing academic excellence that enables your child to gain their first choice of secondary school, encouraging blossoming creativity inside and outside through the creative arts, aiming for your zenith in sporting endeavour or increasing your confidence amongst a caring, family atmosphere, St Hilda’s has something for everyone.

The words above came from a parent whose daughter has just left the much-respected Harpenden School and started her senior educational journey recently. She wrote to express her thanks for all that St Hilda’s has meant, an oft repeated story down the years.

Visit the Mum's guide to Harpenden website to read the full article.

Early speech and language – should you be concerned?

The answer is probably not. Only about 50% of two year olds can produce vowels and other sounds such as p, b, m, n, t, d and w.

90% of three year olds will also be able to produce all of these sounds as well as k, g, f, h, and y. When three years old your child is often putting between three and five words together like “mummy gone work” or “me play football in garden”.  People that know them can mostly understand them, although some words may still be unclear. Occasional stammering is likely to be just because they are trying to share all of their ideas before their language skills are ready.

By three and a half years they will have mastered putting most sounds together proficiently and have an extensive vocabulary. However it may take a further three to four years for all possible consonant blends to be used accurately. Expect your child to be clearly blending sounds such as str, thr and shr at five and a half years plus.

If you are still concerned about your child’s speech they can be referred to the Children’s Speech and Language Therapy service by a health or education professional, therefore in the first instance speak to your early years setting, children’s centre or health visitor. Children under two and a half years cannot be referred, it is just too early to be concerned.

The acquisition ages above are taken from the guidance issued by the Speech and Language Therapy service.

HALLOWEEn happenings and fabulous fireworks

Half term is coming up rapidly, despite it feeling like the kids only just went back to school!  But don't despair.  With Halloween so close to half term there are lots of ghostly (and not so ghostly) things going on to keep everyone entertained.  One which is new this year, but right on our door step, is the Harpenden Common Apple Day on Monday 23rd October.  It sounds like it's going to be a great day out.  Plus Harpenden Library have some free special Halloween story times.  No booking is required but places will be limited so don't be late!  For information on all the fantastic events happening nearby over half term check out our What's On page.  And if you need childcare don't forget that we have hundreds of classes, camps and sessions listed in our Holiday Clubs & Classes section.  Finally, have a look at our  Things To Do section for a Halloween themed day out.

Then, once the kids are back at school (again!) you can all "ooo" and "ahhh" at the local fireworks displays - Crabtree Schools' Annual Firework Spectacular, Redbourn Common Fireworks and St. Albans Firework Display all fall on Saturday 4th November this year, whilst Harpenden Rugby Club Fireworks and Wheathampstead Fireworks are both on 5th November.  Enjoy!
