Listen - The Dynamic Leadership Podcast: South Carolina's Frank Martin On Being Authentic
Louisville: Local businessman Tyra selected as Interim AD for the Cardinals. Tyra is the son of a former UofL MBB legend, was a Baseball student-athlete at Kentucky & has excelled in the corporate world, all factors that led Interim Prez Postel to his doorstep. Tyra was quick to note he's close friends with on-leave AD Jurich & exuded the job Jurich has done over the last 20 years, does not think there's widespread corruption within the athletic department, plans to dig-in on the Adidas deal & speak with Three Stripes North America Prez King. (link); WDRB's Crawford pens on Tyra's appointment, "but the Jurich question looms large." Thesis: "If U of L looks at all this and determines that it wants to stick with Jurich, and if Jurich is satisfied to return (most likely) with a far more restrictive set of rules in place and perhaps the loss of his vice president’s title, Tyra has a positive enough relationship that he’ll be satisfied to turn the keys back over. But if that reconciliation doesn’t happen, Tyra is more than qualified to lead U of L through this difficult time." Crawford continues, "If U of L has cause to relieve Jurich, it better produce it, or at the very least be extremely candid about why, specifically, the move is being made." (link); Not that we need more questionable college athletics news here in the Bluegrass, but so it is as Governor Bevin said yesterday he believes student-athletes should be paid. "The coaches are making millions of dollars a year. Shoe contracts are dictating what happens on our college campuses. Athletics directors and others associated with it that are making exorbitant fees. I don’t begrudge people making a high living. Good for them, and I mean that sincerely. But if that comes at the expense of those that are delivering the athletic prowess on the field, then maybe we should rethink the fact that this is really like the minor leagues for the professional sports associations, and they should be compensated and treated accordingly." (link)
Arizona: Prez Robbins releases a new statement, runs through the steps he's taken since learning of the MBB probe, which included hiring Jackson Lewis. Speaking highly on the leadership of AD Heeke, also, "Head coach Sean Miller has not been charged with—nor accused of—any misconduct and he has been fully cooperative and supportive of our efforts to determine the facts in pursuit of the truth. […] Based on the facts that we know at this time, we support Coach Miller and intend to provide him with all of the tools necessary to meet our goals and expectations." (link); Miller's own message, "I was devastated to learn last week of the allegations made against Emanuel Richardson. I have expressed to both Dr. Robbins and our Athletic Director Dave Heeke that I fully support the University’s efforts to fully investigate these allegations. As the head basketball coach at the University of Arizona, I recognize my responsibility is not only to establish a culture of success on the basketball court and in the classroom, but as important, to promote and reinforce a culture of compliance. To the best of my ability, I have worked to demonstrate this over the past 8 years and will continue to do so as we move forward." (link); Heeke's turn, admires leadership of Robbins, supportive of Miller, promises to work tirelessly to uphold the university's values. (link)
Yahoo's Forde takes a look at how the MBB developments "will completely change the coaching market," gets input from a number of pros involved in the hiring process. First, how about this quote from an unidentified coach, "I think when all is said and done there is going to be 100-plus coaches involved." A number of comments center around the focus on background checks & a likely swing toward X & O coaches over highly-accomplished recruiters. Witt/Kieffer's Young: "ADs are going to stress search firms more. The trust factor is going to skyrocket. We’re all in uncharted waters right now, at least until the dust settles. This is a changing industry and we’ve got to continue to do our due diligence when vetting candidates for head coaching roles. … Search firms have to serve as trusted advisers to the athletics directors, and always have an ear to the ground." More. (link)
Elsewhere: Duke boss Krzyzewski comments, "We don't have a good model, a model that fits what's happening in basketball, so college basketball's going to have problems. […] Last week was bad, doesn't mean all of college basketball is bad. It also doesn't mean that it's necessarily the tip of some iceberg. I don't necessarily agree with that. I think the iceberg is really good." (link); North Carolina's Williams, in part, "I know it looks really bad. I don't know. I don't enjoy that part. But to paint the entire college basketball world like this I don't think it's fair either because I don't think that's what the entire college basketball world is all about. But it was just a shock to me." (link); Lots of thoughts from former CAA Commish Yeager, including, "You’ve got to be working for the right people, the athletics director, the university, the president, who say we recognize what’s going on, but we’re just not going there. We understand we’re probably going to take some lumps because of that." More. (link); Former pitch man Vaccaro: "The financial arrangements between the universities and the shoe companies is the bottom line in this thing. How they can find 17-year-old kids guilty of some go**amn thing is beyond me. The coercion starts at the top. […] This is where the floodgates break. In my opinion, after watching this for 50 years, this is the first time I’ve witnessed that someone’s gonna be forced to tell the truth. Something should happen out of this—for a very, very negative reason, to a positive ending. I just think it’ll be exposed." (link)
North Texas AD Baker is not playing. After ESPN ran a promotion for this Saturday's Michigan-Michigan State FB matchup, which labeled the Spartans as the "Mean Green," Baker rallied on Twitter, "Hey @espn & @MSU_Athletics , without a doubt @MeanGreenSports is the hottest athletic dept in the country. BUT you can’t just try to steal #MeanGreen. It’s trademarked and has been for a very, very long time. Cease and desist letter on the way." Apparently it's not the first time the moniker has been attached to MSU. (link)
New Mexico AD Nunez apologized to anyone offended by the five FB student-athletes who knelt during the national anthem that was unexpectedly played during halftime of the Lobos game against Air Force last weekend: "My apology goes out to those who we offended in this process. … We’re going to help these young men and women support whatever cause they want to, but understanding there’s (other) ways to do it." HC Davie apologized to the five players for the unusual circumstances that "singled them out for undue criticism," saying "They had every right to do that, legally, morally, ethically." The student-athletes stand by their decision. (link)
Roundball: USC Upstate MBB HC Payne steps away from the Spartans after 15 years of leadership. Says it's time after his second ankle replacement, AC Perry, who's been a part of the program for the last eight years, will take the reigns this season. (link); Kentucky boss Calipari on his student-athletes speaking on social issues, "1. Be ready to own what you say and understand there are consequences. That doesn’t mean you’re going to get in trouble with the team or anything like that; just know that, right or wrong, whatever you say, someone likely won’t agree with it or will have a different opinion. 2. Be educated about what you’re talking about. If you’re going to have an opinion about something, know the facts." More. (link)
MBB ref Higgins files a lawsuit in his home state of Nebraska against popular Kentucky fansite Kentucky Sports Radio. Higgins is seeking at least $75K for damages connected to thousands of harassing calls & social media comments on his business's page after UK supporters disputed some of Higgins' calls during last year's NCAA Tourney Elite Eight game against North Carolina. (link); Kentucky Sports Radio founder Jones, a lawyer by training, "The Higgins lawsuit against KSR is frivolous and without any legal merit whatsoever. We will defend it and expect a favorable result quickly." (link)
Northwestern professor and author Thompson advises "For Better Brainstorming, Tell and Embarrassing Story" in this piece from the Harvard Business Review. The father of brainstorming - 1960s advertising exec Osborn - believed following four rules would help a team generate its best ideas: 1. Share any idea that came to mind; 2. Build on the ideas of others; 3. Avoid criticism; and 4. Strive for quantity not quality. UT Arlington professor Paulus added another four rules to the mix, which, research showed, generated 50% more unique ideas: 1. Stay focused on the task at hand; 2. Don't just say an idea, explain it; 3. When ideas run dry, restate the problem and encourage more thinking; and 4. Prompt those not talking to contribute. In their own research, Thompson and her colleagues randomly assigned 93 managers from different companies and industries into three-person teams, giving half the groups instruction to share embarrassing stories and the other half stories of pride. Using "fluency" (volume of ideas generated) and "flexibility" (how many different kinds of ideas generated) as scoring criteria, the results indicated that "embarrassment" teams generated 26% more ideas spanning 15% more use categories than the "prideful" teams. A note from NCAA SVP for Championships Comstock: "The process for selecting, seeding and bracketing teams for championships will not change for 2017-18 due to state-issued travel bans. Our sports committees are not altering their selection processes. They will follow principles used in the past; teams that have earned the right to host on their college campus, due to their team performance, will be allowed to host." (link)

Thorough read on how Eastern Illinois AD Michael has handled multiple rounds of budget cuts since he arrived in Charleston back in July of 2014. The higher ed funding situation in the state is part of the story & Michael estimates 15 to 18 jobs have been eliminated, ranging from administrative assistant help to roles in Strength & Conditioning. Compliments his coaches & student-athletes for not complaining, continuing to work hard & move forward. "There’s no question that those of us in the state of Illinois are feeling it in one way or another. Even (AD) Larry Lyons at Illinois State, as solid as their enrollment is, they are feeling the impact in athletics. When I talk to the colleges in the (Ohio Valley Conference), there’s other states that are having a financial impact." More. (link)
Georgia Southern AD Kleinlein is dealing with some fan dissatisfaction as his tradition-rich FB program sits at 0-3 ahead of tonight's hosting of Arkansas State. "I think one of the things people forget sometimes is this is a process. We’re moving our program to FBS football, and in the first two years we were highly successful, and I think that might’ve disillusioned some people into how hard this really is. You look at other programs that have made the jump that we have, and you look at the success that they had, they’ve all gone through periods where things have been challenging, and right now we’re going through that period. I’m very confident that our football coaches and our staff and our players are doing the things that we need to do to be successful, and we’ll get this thing turned around in the long run." (link)
LEAD1 interviewed Iowa AD Barta as part of its LEAD1EXPERIENCE series. In the 28-minute video interview, Barta touches on a number of issues, including the Kid Captain program, the new tradition during Hawkeye FB games involving waving to patients at Iowa Stead Children's Hospital, along with his thoughts on leadership and the overall landscape of college athletics. Barta on what he's learned about leadership: "I've learned that no matter how much I think I know, I still have a lot to learn. That's my starting point." Lots more. (link)
More on the Title IX lawsuit at Albany, which includes AD Benson & was originally reported last month. Former Women's Tennis HC Graham is suing for immediate restoration of his program, as well as claims of age discrimination stemming from a comment Benson reportedly made about Graham being old enough to retire. Four former student-athletes are also defendants in the suit. (link); IMG pushes for the dismissal of former Ohio State FB student-athlete Spielman's lawsuit. Per Cleveland-based attorney Castrodale, the suit "does not specifically allege that IMG did anything in connection with any alleged wrongdoing, or is about to do anything wrongful that should be prevented." (link)
Additional legal notes as sports attorney Wallach reports a new lawsuit has been filed on FLSA grounds against 20 DI Pennsylvania-based institutions. "The crux of this Complaint is that recipients of athletic scholarships, which require them to participate in NCAA athletics under daily supervision of full-time coaching and training staff, i.e., 'Scholarship Athletes,' are employees of NCAA member schools as much as, and arguably more than, fellow students employed in work study programs,1 e.g., student ticket takers, seating attendants and food concession workers at NCAA contests." (link); Here's the full 56-page filing. Yahoo Sports' Eisenberg ponders whether LaVar Ball's decision to pull his son LaMelo out of high school because of a power struggle with the school's administration and new head coach is a sign of things to come for UCLA MBB and HC Alford. Eisenberg writes: "What will LaVar do if LiAngelo comes off the bench for UCLA next season behind heralded freshman Kris Wilkes and averages only a few shots per game? Would it surprise anyone if LaVar uses his massive fame to publicly question Alford the same way he has the Chino Hills coaches?" However, some believe LaVar's influence on the program has been diminished with Lonzo now on to the NBA and LaMelo's NCAA eligibility in question because of his signature Big Baller Brand shoe. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Watch: Disney boss Iger was on stage at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit yesterday, confirms he'll step down in 2019, points to the coming ESPN OTT offering as having 10,000 additional live games available via subscription, but still no price points mentioned. Iger also offers that "maybe one day this will be the only way to watch ESPN." Notes the Worldwide Leader as still one of the most successful & popular brands in America, but moving to OTT is "the reality of our times." More. (link); @SportsTVRatings updates on estimated household penetration for major sports outlets. ESPN = 87.523M (down 203K from September), ESPN2 = 87.393M (down 213K), FS1 = 85.297M (up 549K). ESPNU = 66.725M (down 353K), Big Ten Network = 57.980M (down 38K). (link)
Georgia Tech AD Stansbury has worked with Adidas, which will become the school's official uniform and apparel provider in July of next year, to narrow the particular shade of gold that will be used for uniforms, apparel and graphics down to four options. Stansbury explained how difficult the selection process has been: "What makes it so complicated is that, with gold, and I’m sure with other colors, but since I’m fixated on gold right now, what that color looks like on a helmet vs. apparel vs. indoor vs. outdoor, whether there’s a metallic sheen to it or not, it changes. And that’s really what makes it difficult because, I think for the most part, most Georgia Tech people say we want to match it up or it should be somewhere in the realm of golds associated with the Ramblin’ Wreck, but it’s not that easy." (link)
Troy AD McClain is focusing on capitalizing on the FB team's upset win over LSU this past weekend and not the future of HC Brown, whose name is generating buzz in coaching circles. McClain on the possibility of Brown leaving for a bigger program: "There are only a handful of programs in the country who don't have to deal with that if they're successful. We know who the top 5-10 programs in the country, if they are ultra-successful, they don't have to worry about their coach being hired by someone else or pursued by other people. But it's a whole lot better than the alternative, and that's where I stand." On his aspirations for Trojans FB: "We want to be recognized as one of the top programs in the Group of Five. That's our objective. When that conversation comes up, we want to be part of the conversation. My job is to make sure we maximize [our] marketing and exposure opportunities and drive the narrative of us being a top tier Group of Five program." (link)
Venues: Villanova gets stiff-armed on a bubble by Radnor Township that would have exceeded the 38-foot high limit for buildings in the neighborhood at 65-feet. No word yet on if the university will appeal. AD Jackson notes the need for more practice space & how peers have state-of-the-art digs. (link); UMass has added four new Dak boards to the Mullins Center, including a sharp new center-hung unit. (link); ANC is the vendor of choice at Utah for a new center-hung videoboard in the Huntsman Center. Neat pictures of the unit being built. (link)
Around Higher Ed: Montana brass select 38-year old Bodnar as its new Prez. Bodnar has spent the last six years at GE, which was preceded by eight in the military. He's also a former Rhodes scholar, has two Master's from Oxford & graduated at the top of his class from Army West Point. Interesting hire. (link); While we don't know who the semifinalists are for Iowa State's Prez opening, we do know what questions will be asked during interviews. (link); Oklahoma is moving forward in its search for a new Prez, will use the same search committee format as 1993-94 when outgoing boss Boren was nominated: 7 members at large and 5 faculty (full vote), 2 staff (half vote each) and 3 students (one-third vote each). (link); Longtime Alabama politician Ross resigns his state Senate seat to become the new Prez at Alabama State. (link); The quest to find New Mexico's next leader could be down to five by the end of the week. (link)
Also Noticed: Houston selects Anthony Travel. Cougars AD Yurachek notes the "prowess" Anthony Travel has demonstrated over the years. (link); Reports indicated Notre Dame is in conversations with the NHL about hosting an outdoor matchup involving the Chicago Blackhawks at Notre Dame Stadium. (link); Ohio State & Cincinnati MBB will tip in 2018 & 2019. (link); A USC FB student-athlete allegedly pushed a Washington State fan to the ground during last weekend's field storming. (link); San Diego State & Toledo to kick in 2020 & 2022. (link); Check out this video from Texas FB that Football Scoop labeled a "recruiting masterpiece." (link)
