University of Gothenburg and ForBio workshop: RevBayes and BEAST2 Oct. 23-27, 2017, Gothenburg
RevBayes and BEAST2 are two major software packages implementing Bayesian phylogenetic methods. In this course, RevBayes will in particular be used to jointly infer fossil and molecular data, whereas the STACEY and DENIM add-ons to BEAST2 will be used to infer species delimitation and migration under the the multi-species coalescent model. Extended application deadline is October 10th, 2017
ForBio course: IUCN Red List Assessment November 13-16, 2017, Trondheim
This four-day course provides training about IUCN Red List, including the topics covered in a typical IUCN Red List Assessor Training workshop. In this course, with theoretical lectures and practical sessions you will learn about the IUCN Red List assessment process and how to compile a scientifically rigorous and objective IUCN Red List assessment on global and regional scales. Application deadline is October 15th, 2017
Transmitting Science and ForBio course: The art of Science - Scientific Illustration November 20 - 24, 2017, Sabadell, Barcelona, Spain
Scientific illustration blends the discipline and creativity of science and art to produce images that serve and communicate science. This course is designed to help scientists, science communicators, artists, and adults interested in natural history develop the observation skills and drawing skills they need to record, distill, and visually communicate observations made of natural history objects and organisms. Traditional scientific illustration techniques as well as the history, significance, status, and future directions of scientific illustration will be explored in this hands-on studio-style course. Places are limited to 15 participants and will be occupied by strict registration order
Non-ForBio courses and meetings
19th Young Systematists’ Forum (December 1st, 2017. Flett Lecture Theatre, Natural History Museum, London, UK) The annual Forum represents an exciting setting for Masters, PhD and young postdoctoral researchers to present their data to a scientific audience interested in taxonomy, systematics and phylogenetics. This well-established event provides an important opportunity for budding systematists to discuss their research in front of their peers within a supportive environment. Supervisors and other established systematists are also encouraged to attend.
Registration is FREE. Prizes will be awarded for the most promising oral and poster presentation as judged by a small panel on the day. Abstract submission deadline November 3rd, 2017
World Conference on Marine Biodiversity (13-16 May 2018, Montreal, Canada) The 4th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity will be held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Québec, Canada, from May 13-16, 2018. This meeting will bring together scientists, practitioners, and policy makers to discuss and advance our understanding of the importance and current state of biodiversity in the marine environment. Through a mix of keynote sessions, contributed talks and posters, and bookable venues for focused meetings, the conference program will address marine biodiversity across a deliberately wide range of relevant sectors. Participation will be encouraged from the broadest possible range of stakeholder groups from academics to industry. The deadline for abstract submission has been extended until 1st December 2017
