+ Louisville AD Jurich & MBB HC Pitino were placed on administrative leave, the former with pay & the latter without. Prez Postel indicated interim replacements for both will be announced in the next 48 hours, also adds, "Doing nothing would be tacit endorsement of unethical and criminal behavior." While many are pointing to the decision as the end for the two high-profile leaders, Jurich released a statement that included, "My intent has always been to run every athletic program at the University in an honest and compliant manner.  It is heartbreaking to me that the alleged intentional and secret criminal acts can bring such harm to our school.  I love this University, the Louisville community and all of our fans. I plan to continue to help UofL overcome the challenges it faces and work cooperatively with the University with the support of the UofL Board of Trustees following their meeting on October 19th." Clearly, more to come. (link)
+ Alabama dismissed MBB staffer Baker after learning he was "Staff Member 1" in the FBI complaints. Crimson Tide AD Byrne: "Following yesterday's reports from New York regarding a Federal investigation of intercollegiate athletics, The University of Alabama Department of Athletics immediately initiated an internal review of our men's basketball operations. As a result, we have accepted the resignation effective today of Kobie Baker, a men's basketball administrator. Our review has not identified any NCAA or SEC rules violations nor the involvement of any other coach or staff member. We have notified both of the governing bodies of the actions we have taken. As always, we will continue to be proactive in our compliance efforts." (link)
+ The FBI continues its work as notable attorney Heitner breaks, "Sources: Employees of Nike's EYBL grassroots division, along with documents, have been subpoenaed by FBI in furtherance of investigation." (link)
+ ESPN's Rovell adds, "Sources close to the FBI's NCAA bribery scandal say no Under Armour executives have been subpoenaed to date." (link)
National Narrative:
+ ESPN's Schlabach with a deep read on how the system got to this point. (link)
+ Sports Illustrated's Staples: "The NCAA’s Rules Gave Rise to a Generation of Pimps. Here's How It Can Clean Them Up." Thesis: "Let the players have agents. This may sound radical, but officials in several conferences have kicked around this possibility for years. College baseball players already are allowed have them. (Though the NCAA calls them “advisors.”) Simply extend that courtesy to all athletes. Chances are the agents would mostly want to sign football and basketball players, since that’s where the bulk of the money is. […] The most important reason why the schools should consider allowing agents is that it finally would give the schools some power over them." (link)
+ The Wall Street Journal's Gay gets insight from Tulane law professor Feldman, "The conduct itself doesn’t necessarily appear to violate any laws, standing on their own, but it’s the combination of factors that appear to have convinced the government to bring this case." Other attorneys question what federal laws were really broken. (link)
+ Notable former shoe executive Vaccaro: "They’re going to stretch the envelope and break rules again and again and again. They haven’t stopped for 100 years. They’ve been cheating, they’ve been fixing games, they’ve been doing everything for 100 years. The other thing that remains constant is the NCAA pays itself a lot of money and nothing changes. […] What you see now is the school cannot be naïve anymore. They know the people they did business with. They are partners. They have a deal. In Louisville’s case $180 million dollars. They are the partners for these people … I’m proud of what I did and I think what I did was revolutionary and it was a marketing tool." (link)
+ New York City scout Konchalski on the realities of the shoe game during the summer: That’s where kids get seen. If you’re not on the shoe company circuit, it’s hard to get recruited at the highest level. It’s very difficult. You might think it’s unhealthy for the shoe companies to have such influence in the recruiting process — it has sort of replaced high school in spring and summer, and taken power out of the hands of the high school coaches — but that’s the way it goes." (link)
+ The Ringer's Titus, a former Ohio State MBB student-athlete, "...for now I’m optimistic that Tuesday’s announcement of an ongoing FBI investigation could do for college basketball what the Mitchell Report did for baseball. I’m optimistic that college basketball could rise from the ashes that an FBI sting will certainly create, and that it could one day get to a place where it operates with a moderately cleaner conscience." (link)
+ AL.com's Talty: "NCAA is going to have to go on a hiring spree to investigate all of the issues that have sprung up since FBI dropped the hammer." (link)
+ ESPN's Bilas: "A major report on college sports found slush funds, pay to athletes, rampant commercialism...Carnegie Report in 1929. How far we've come." (link)
+ ESPN's Medcalf: "I've talked to a number of black coaches who worry this week's developments will make it harder for them to get HC jobs." (link)
+ Former Kansas State MBB student-athlete Beasley: "Man, you guys are just catching on. And that’s all I gotta say." However, Beasley said more, including that he wasn't paid to play for the Wildcats. (link)
Arizona:
+ Statement from Prez Robbins: "The University of Arizona expects everyone who is part of our campus community to adhere to the highest ethical standards of behavior. Arizona Athletics has a strong culture of compliance that begins at the top and extends throughout the organization. Specifically, the Athletics Department has a documented history of strengthening institutional control by being proactive and comprehensive through rules education and program monitoring." Robbins also says he's started the dismissal process for MBB AC Richardson. (link)
+ The Arizona Daily Star's Hansen: "Statements by Arizona AD and president don't mention Sean Miller at all. No 'we stand behind him' no 'we're working with him.' Total silence." (link)
Auburn:
+ Prez Leath: "This was an isolated individual." Leath indicates he received a call on Monday night about the developments & then learned more about the investigation during a Tuesday morning meeting with an FBI agent. "I think it says clearly that they don't think there's some structural problem or some broader problem at the university […] I don't think anybody else knew. I don't think there's any indication at Auburn that anybody else knew about this. [...] It's very disappointing. I think university presidents are always concerned that the tail doesn't wag the dog. And then you see things like this going on under people's noses, and you wonder how it's even possible." (link)
+ The Tigers are offering full refunds on season tickets in light of the scandal. (link)
+ CBSSports.com's Norlander indicates MBB HC Pearl's contract contains language that could see him dismissed with cause if the university, SEC or NCAA believes there's "reasonable basis" that rules were broken & he didn't attempt to fully "prevent, limit, report or mitigate" the situation. (link)
+ AL.com's Scarbinsky: "If this is not the last domino that topples (AD) Jay Jacobs, I don't know what will be." (link)
More Louisville
+ As you might guess, Cards MBB HC Pitino is ready to fight, though his thoughts are on current UofL student-athletes. (linklink)
+ Interesting take as WDRB's George is a former UofL Volleyball student-athlete & provides insight on how other student-athletes in the Cards portfolio may be taking the news & their outlook moving forward. (link)
+ USA Today's Berkowitz reviews the contracts of Jurich & Pitino, with the former's being more complicated since he has deals with both the athletic department & the university Foundation. (link)
+ Yahoo's Forde goes in on Pitino, a leader he's covered for nearly three decades, "I wrote Tuesday that Louisville could and should get the ultimate sanction, the NCAA death penalty, which would require at least a year without playing competitive basketball. I also wrote that Pitino and Jurich had to be fired, as the burden of scandal finally outweighed the years of great work. There was no joy in writing it; both men have treated me very well over the years. Covering the colorful Pitino and his great teams has been among the great joys of doing this job. But at some point, accountability for the state of affairs overrides likability. The Louisville leadership – or what’s left of it – saw the situation similarly. The time for anything other than unsparing action had arrived. Pitino departed Louisville’s campus with hurried steps after a stinging rebuke behind closed doors, his legacy forever altered. It shouldn’t have happened this way. The happy ending eluded Rick Pitino in a city he came to love, and which loved him back. There will be no goodbye parade in his honor." (link)
+ The Athletic's Mandel wonders what happens with Cards FB HC Petrino in light of Jurich's potential exit and, as as result, a decreased buyout from $8.5M to $4.25M. (link)
Miami (FL)
+ Prez Frenk, in part, "While we are alarmed and disappointed, we are steadfast in our belief that we must act with the highest level of integrity and commitment to the pursuit of the truth. To that end, we have pledged our full and complete cooperation with the Department of Justice probe as well as the the NCAA, with whom we will jointly review any relevant matters. The legal process and any NCAA joint review will likely take some time, so I urge patience for all those who love our University. We are a strong institution, and I can assure you we will do what is right, even if doing so is hard." (link)
+ More from MBB HC Larrañaga’s attorney: "Please be assured that our beloved coach is unaware of any impropriety on the part of UM basketball and does not know the identity of [the] unnamed, unidentified 'Coach-3.' He looks forward to leading the Hurricanes to continued success." (link)
Oklahoma State:
+ Pokes AD Holder: "I want to reiterate that Oklahoma State University was shocked by the allegations made yesterday against one of our assistant men's basketball coaches. We learned about the allegations the same way most people did through media reports. The allegations are serious and they violate everything we stand for as an athletic department and university. As we have already stated, we will cooperate with federal officials and coordinate with the NCAA as we move forward with looking into this matter to the fullest extent. Let me underscore, we expect every person affiliated with our athletic program to conduct themselves with integrity and to comply with the rules and the law." (link)
+ Tulsa World's Emig: "When (MBB HC) Boynton tells Holder he had no idea this was happening, and nothing OSU discovers disputes Boynton’s innocence, is that enough? Even if Boynton remains coach as practice begins and OSU keeps digging and comes up dry by the season opener, is that enough? […] Or is there even a tiny little part of them that keeps whispering: 'He had to know something'? Is there part of them that dreads the possibility he, not Evans, will be dragged into U.S. District Court as OSU head coach? Is there part of them that dreads the fact that should that occur, the NCAA has just upped the ante on penalties?" (link)
USC:
+ More from Trojans AD Swann: "The fact that this is a federal investigation and not instigated by the NCAA is part of the reason it’s receiving so much attention. Just because there was a press conference doesn’t mean that the investigation is over. […] USC is extremely disappointed in having an assistant coach involved with the scandal. […] Where there’s smoke, there’s fire and I will act when I smell smoke. I’m not interested in waiting until there’s a fire. Had we had any indication that something was wrong in any of our departments, we would have taken action sooner." (link)
Elsewhere:
+ UConn AD Benedict says he's "as confident as I can be" that the Huskies aren't a part of the developments dropped on Tuesday. "The FBI brings an entirely different dimension. You have people who are looking at hard time. I'm sure most of these coaches involved in making those decisions, they're looking at benefits and risks. If the risk is a 'show-cause,' that's different than I could go to prison for 80 years. That in itself will start taking an effect." (link)
+ Creighton AD Rasmussen: "I’m saddened but not surprised. It’s just disappointing. ... In what I think is the greatest game on Earth, college basketball, it’s just disappointing. […] I don’t like the direction college athletics has gone, especially at the Division I level. But I don’t know how to put the toothpaste back into the tube, either." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Beginning in 2018, Netflix will offer up its mobile encoding to airlines in an effort to save up to 75% of bandwidth while still providing high-quality streams and it looks like the SVOD is advocating that airlines reduce the costs associated with in-flight Wi-Fi access. Netflix: "Making Wi-Fi very affordable maximizes the benefit of your investment; the more passengers that experience a great internet experience, the larger the business impact." (link); Projections show airlines making an astounding $30B from those Wi-Fi access fees by 2035. Nebraska: HuskerOnline's Rosen writes on the importance of a search firm in the quest to hire a new AD in Lincoln. Notes Interim AD Rimington's 60-day tenure as evidence UNL is moving quickly to identify & recruit a new boss for athletics. Interestingly, Rosen notes some of the search firms around the landscape, also says IMG has a hand in such matters, gets comments from NACDA Executive Director Vecchione who points to the importance of "keeping the search process off the front page." (link); The Lincoln Journal Star's Dunker points to Thanksgiving as a target date for the new hire. Key note from Tuesday, UNL Chancellor Green indicates a search firm would be signed by the end of the day, so we'll wait on that announcement/release/back-channel reporting. Green: "We expect this will be a short search, where we hope to do that as quickly as possible, but we’ll take as long as it takes to find a great leader." (link); Rimington will make $50K per month, says he's not a candidate for the full-time gig.(link)
North Dakota Prez Kennedy hired consulting firm Murney & Associates to review top athletic department officials and coaches. The contract between UND and Murney specifies a $1,700 charge for the "administrative process, preparation, individual one-hour interview, feedback and summary report" of a Hogan Assessment. When asked if he had confidence in AD Faison, Kennedy responded with praise for the department's athletic and academic success, Faison's navigation into the Summit League & MVFC and the tumultuous past year of budget cuts and sport elimination. Kennedy: "I'd like to reverse the question. Who has accomplished as much in the last year that would have the standing to ask that question? I've given you my answer. He's accomplished a great deal. I would make it a practice to have faith and confidence in everybody that remains employed with me." Faison: "It's an opportunity to get feedback and think about how we can improve. It's part of the process. We can take those insights and continue to move forward." (link)
UNC Greensboro unveiled "The Spartan Way: 2017-2022," a new five-year strategic plan that falls in line with the school's "Taking Giant Steps" plan announced last week. AD Record: "This planning process gave us an opportunity to connect with our stakeholders and imagine our future together. We identified six strategic priorities to focus on: student-athlete well-being, athletic facilities, branding and engagement, resources, basketball and culture and community." More than 100 people comprised the strategic planning committee and developed 200+ action steps to be executed over the next five years using six guiding principles: student-athlete well-being, teamwork, responsibility, integrity, development and excellence. (link)
In this month's edition of Frazier's Corner, Northern Illinois AD Frazier included his departments annual report, highlighted by the women winning the Jacoby Trophy, given to the best all-around program in the MAC. Points out the $2M cut to the athletic department's budget, the importance of fundraising efforts and the "Huskie Pride" felt after FB's win over Nebraska earlier in the month. Encourages fans to return for Homecoming and promotes the "Pick 6" package, whereby fans can pick six tix in any combination to any of the Huskies remaining FB games for as low as $65. A bit more. (link)
The Big Ten Network and the Big Ten Conference announced a new partnership that will see the BTN offer sponsors and advertisers multimedia, marketing and corporate partnership opportunities associated with the league's events. Learfield, which previously managed the conference's multimedia rights and serves eight B10 schools, is involved with the new partnership and among the first brands to jump on board with the new deal are Gatorade, Shell, SoFi, State Farm and T-mobile. BTN VP of Sales Reeder: "At its core, this partnership better enables us to serve our clients and their objectives. With this portfolio, we can deliver new points of access to connect with the college sports fan – offering scale with a modern and comprehensive approach." (link); Austin American-Statesman mainstay Davis "The Texas AG has blocked an open records request from us to get the Corona contract w/UT. This is a total change in protocol. Hey, @IMG, you are doing business with a governmental agency. Your contracts are subject to open records. But what should truly bother you, the reader and Texan, is that your AG office is now blocking what should be obtainable info at UT." (link)
TV: The Athletic's Brandt writes a smart piece on why the NFL's ratings won't impact future TV deals for premiere sports properties. "We are in an era of NFL programming that includes hungry-for-content digital media companies possessing virtually unlimited funds. The NFL will, once again, come out as big winners." (link); Fox Sports Prez Shanks says his network won't show the national anthem this weekend, expects there to be ebbs & flows to the ratings story throughout the season. (link); DISH Network boss Ergen: "Altice could take ESPN down and survive it, five years ago that would not have been an option, that would have been suicidal. But today they could do it. There is not any channel that I go to sleep at night, that if the price is too high for our consumers, that we're not willing to take down." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
When Northwestern FB plays at Wisconsin this weekend, the Wildcats will take the field with arms locked in a move that student-athlete Queiro says will show, "We're one unified group; we all believe in equality." HC Fitzgerald has made it clear his players reserve the right to express themselves in bolder fashion and we should point out that the Wildcats take the field for the national anthem at all home games. (link); Stanford hosts Arizona State on Saturday for "Sexual and Relationship Violence Awareness Day," an idea that grew from rape survivor Tracy's meeting with the Cardinal FB team back in April. Patches on staff members' shirts, stickers on players' helmets for both teams and "Set the Expectation" (Tracy's campaign name) t-shirts distributed to the student section, are among the action items to bring awareness to the cause.  (link)
Buffalo will name its new $18M indoor training facility the Murchie Family Fieldhouse after the department received its largest single gift ever from the family of alum Murchie. The university expects to break ground on the new facility on Oct. 7 and complete the project in 2019. Deputy AD for External Operations Gross: "I think over the years we've built a great relationship with Tunney and his family. He has a lot of trust and confidence in our administration and feels very comfortable with the direction of the program and what we're trying to accomplish. They, too, want to see big-time college athletics in Buffalo and a strong FBS football program, and they understand a fieldhouse is transformational for our program in terms of recruiting, training and preparation." (link)
TCU is surveying season-ticket holders in an effort to get feedback on various amenities at Amon G. Carter Stadium, including the possibility of expanding premium seating. AD Del Conte: "At this point no decisions have been made regarding future renovations or additions to the stadium. The University is, however, actively searching for ways to improve the game day experience for Horned Frogs fans while remaining steadfastly committed to preserving the tradition and atmosphere unique to our Stadium." (link); Still 11 months away from playing its first game in the renovated Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium, Arkansas has already signed commitments for all 38 new suites and received commitments for 59 of the 70 loge boxes that will be built. The Razorbacks began offering an additional 2,200 club seats last Tuesday and sold 60 in the first week. Each of the 38 new suites, which brings the total number of suites at the stadium to 172, requires a seven-year commitment and an annual donation of approximately $4K per seat, while the loge boxes are being offered at $4K per seat each season. Razorback Foundation Exec. Dir. Varady: "Obviously we're very pleased. The Razorback fans deserve all the credit and it's a tribute to them - the people who support our program and are making a difference in our program by making these gift commitments on the suites." (link)
Vanderbilt has decided to continue playing its home FB games on campus despite expressing interest in August of possibly sharing a proposed off-campus venue with a potential Major League Soccer expansion franchise. However, the university is continuing to support the city's MLS bid and is "exploring the opportunity" to lease the proposed new soccer field for one or two Commodore events each year. (link)
Austin Peay reached a multi-year partnership agreement that will allow Under Armour to become the official outfitter for the Governors. The agreement will also allow Under Armour to market its brand through marketing campaigns in print and venue presence at the university. AD Ivey: "This is an exciting day for Austin Peay athletics. Under Armour is one of the most respected and innovative brands in the world and now our athletes and coaches will be outfitted in the industry's best training and competition products available." (link)

1.Question brought to you by Turnkey Search
With UNC Greensboro's new strategic plan noted above, Florida Atlantic AD Pat Chun previously discussed the implementation of strategic plans with 1.Q. Chun was quick to say it's the intangible assets, like building positive morale & a shared belief, that have been even more important for his department than tangible outcomes. "Success typically happens by design." Listen by clicking the link. (link) (length - 5:04)
