Hello Hub Farmily!

Happy autumn! We are solidly in the season of cool mornings and warm afternoons. Gear up for all the cider, bonfires, and whatever else fall means to you! Autumn is a great harvest season and we are looking forward to seeing some sweet potatoes as well as other fall vegetables soon. Check out what we've got going on here at the Farm!

Notes from the Garden

Here in the garden, fall means cooler days and fog on the pond! Okra is still growing strong and we are getting some first harvests of successional arugula and other mixed lettuces. We're starting to see some germination from our direct seeding of carrots, onions, and radishes as well as some great growth of our transplanted brassicas--check out these pac chois!

Thanks to our friends from the Northern Agro-science classes who have been coming out every Friday to help us plant all these leafy greens and more!

Visitor Spotlight

This week, masters students from the UNC Master of Arts in Teaching program have been out at the farm working to brainstorm new ways we can engage students at the Hub Farm. For one of their projects, they are building a hugelkultur bed in the forest. Hugelkultur, meaning hill culture or hill mound, is an ancient growing technique that holds moisture, builds fertility, and maximizes surface volume. Our new hugelkultur bed will be made of building materials found in the forest that will break down over time lending nutrients to support native medicinal and edible plants and herbs. The students are also painting a bridge to make it a more educational space.  Thanks to the UNC students for all their hard work!

What's Bloomin'??

Our honeybees have been very happy lately-- as the summer flowers have come and gone, they still have plenty of fall flowers to sip from here! Fall flowers are important so that bees have a constant source of food even after summer is over. We've got tons of aster, golden rod, bee balm, heleniums, and zinnias.

Want to add native, pollinator flowers to your home or school garden? Come visit our new pollinator gardens or check out these online resources from Cooperative Extension agent, Debbie Roos, HERE.

Our next volunteer workday is on Saturday, October 7 from 9am -12 pm. We also have one coming up on Saturday, November 11, from 1-4pm. Please email dpshubfarm@gmail.com to RSVP!

Keep your eyes peeled for our Fall Harvest Fest/Open House! There will be sweet potatoes and a whole lot of fun! Date TBA.

Hope to see you all out at the farm this fall!
