Identify the species - help is at hand.
There are many tools and resources available to help our everyday interaction with the environment. Identifying what we find out there can be a challenge, with so many different species in our natural world.  HBRC will shortly have a CD that gives us a tool to identify over 100 different macro invertebrate species.
This CD has been collated by Landcare Research - it's just one of their educational resources.  NatureSpace is another site well worth a visit - we have the link in this newsletter.

Back to school next week for the last term of 2017!  It will be another busy term with EOTC and NCEA exams. We are looking forward to working with several schools in our region and will share these experiences next month.

All the best. We hope you enjoy this issue of Step Out.
BIOBLITZ IN HAVELOCK NORTH
Recently I  joined Te Mata Primary students doing a mini Bioblitz at Palmbrook Reserve and Karituwhenua Stream in Havelock North. The day was coordinated by the Cape to City education team. It was a huge group effort with 80+ students plus teachers and parent helpers. Also helping out were a group of Year 10 students from Karamu High School, with their teacher Andrea Roberts. Special guest and Ambassador for the Cape to City project Ruud Kleinpaste also 'bugged us' with his expertise and support. Take a look at how they have used the NatureWatch website to record their findings.
WHAT IS A BIOBLITZ?

Te Mata Primary have listed their bioblitz in the NatureWatch website. Once the data is uploaded we can all see what they discovered!

ENVIROSCHOOLS
REFLECTING AT BRONZE
Initial steps being taken           Opportunities identified
Laying foundations           Committed to the journey
Congratulations Frimley Park Kindergarten They started their Enviroschools journey at the end of 2015. Last month they reflected on their journey so far.  There was plenty of evidence to satisfy the bronze reflection process. Sustainability practices were clear to see for all those taking part. They have identified next steps which include looking to extend their community garden and using Atua and their characteristics to explain sustainability to the tamariki.

Well done to all the whanau and teaching team at Frimley Park Kindergarten.

Who we like

Department of Conservation
The theme for conservation week this year is "Love my Backyard".  So this could be your own backyard, your school yard or the wider Hawke's Bay environment.

One local event is the release of six new kākā into the wild at the Department of Conservation's Boundary Stream Mainland Island.  WHEN? On Wednesday 18 October and anyone is welcome to attend. For more details see Eventfinda, or contact the local DOC office.

To see what else is happening this week you can visit the Department of Conservation website.

What we like

2017 BIRD OF THE YEAR

Voting is open NOW and until Monday 23 October on the Forest & Bird website

Lend your voice to help New Zealand birds by supporting Bird of the Year.
Creating a national picture of community conservation efforts.  This website is a great source of information. As well as local Hawke's Bay groups, you can see what other conservation, restoration and environmental groups are doing right around the country.

THE WASTE GAME - here is a new board game created by Mike Richards in collaboration with WasteNet Southland as an educational resource. The game is collaborative, fun and great for teaching kids to Recycle Right and care for their world. You play as a team, moving a truck piece around the board, collecting and sorting items, and emptying all the bins. Up to 10 participants can play at the same time, from ages 3+. Purchases can be made from http://www.i-cue.co.nz/educational-games.htm. The Regional Council has a copy - if you would like to borrow the game please get in touch: enviro@hbrc.govt.nz

Looking ahead

October sees the Guthrie-Smith Arboretum at Tutira open to the public..

Every Sunday from October to May this jewel is open 9am to 5pm for a small entry fee.

Guthrie-Smith, Tutira is the legacy of Herbert Guthrie Smith and his vision to create an ecologically-important haven for native birds and a repository of rare and endangered trees, plants, and other flora.
Pictured above is a Californian Redwood - one of many species growing in the Arboretum.
