A Note from the Director
It is hard to believe that the first month of school is already behind us. The cool fall breezes are blowing in and the leaves are beginning to think about turning colors.
We have lots of fun planned this month – the fire truck will visit to talk about fire safety, Joanna DeHart will be here to take our pictures, Pumpkin Day Parade to share our costumes, and we will go on a Family Field Trip. Wow!! It's a busy month!!
I hope that you are planning to join us for a Family Field Trip on October 21st. We will meet at Hall Family Farm for some fall fun...pumpkin picking, hay rides, outdoor games, and more. More information is included later in the newsletter. Buy your tickets TODAY!!!
There is a lot of important information in this newsletter because October is such a busy month so take time to read it now. Mark your calendar for all of these important events. Thank you so much for helping us with such a smooth start to the school year. The children have settled into the routines of the classroom and are learning and growing every day. The teachers are working hard to keep them challenged and engaged each day.
When October rolls around here in Charlotte, the temperatures can vary greatly. If the temperatures turn a little chilly, please be sure to send a light jacket for your child to go on the playground. It also may be time to think about the change of clothes in your child’s book bag. Are they warm enough?

Parent Council is off to a great start. We have planned a Fall Family Field Trip to Hall Family Farm on October 21st. Look for more information in the newsletter.
Our annual Barnes and Noble Book Fair is in the works. Dates will be determined soon for sometime in November.
We are excited to have some new members in our group. It's not too late to join and help out if you would like to. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, October 17th at 9:15am. Hope to see you there!

Good Shepherd Church

A Note from Pastor Robert!
I've had the opportunity to sing with your children in preschool chapel several times now. One of the songs we often sing is "My God is So Big!" - it is a simple and great reminder for kids (and their grown-ups) that God is bigger than our seemingly huge struggles, obstacles, and setbacks. Between the busy-ness of Fall schedules and the storms swirling around (natural and man-made), I find encouragement in knowing that God is indeed "so big, so strong, and so mighty... there's nothing our God cannot do!" May you be encouraged by God's strength, love, and peace this week!

Amazing Athletes starts October 3rd! Coach Lorenzo will be here each Tuesday at 1:00pm to meet with those children who choose to be in the program. Parents arrive at 1:45 to pick-up. There are still spaces remaining for the class. This program is a sports program that introduces children to 9 different sports over the year. They learn basic skills for each sport in an environment that is fun and appropriate for young children. Stop by and check it out!

Joanna DeHart Photography will be here on October 18th and 19th to take individual pictures of the children. We will clarify which classes are which days that week. Weather plays a big role in that decision. Joanna uses the beauty of the outdoors to capture the children's smiles and personalities. You will be able to purchase prints from proofs after the shoot. A family shoot will be scheduled as well for one afternoon.

Pumpkin Day Parades
The children will have the opportunity to parade through the school and smile for the camera as they show off their costume for all to see. The Pumpkin Day Parade will be held on October 26th at 9:15am. Please bring your child (2-4 year old classes) to school in costume if they choose to wear one. We ask that children do not wear costumes depicting witches, warlocks, or other scary creatures. Please be sure to send a change of clothes for your child to wear the rest of the day at school. Don’t forget shoes for school and the parade! Look for further information on the Pumpkin Day Parade from your child’s teacher. It promises to be a fun day for everyone!

I'm excited to tell you that we are continuing our partnership with the Carriage Club residents this month. Carriage Club is an assisted living facility on Olde Providence Road. Their program coordinator reached out to me about trying to develop an inter-generational program between our children and their elderly residents. These type programs are beneficial for the elderly and the children in so many ways. Check out some of these articles to learn about the benefits.

Do you have any old Ipods or smart phones around your house that would be usable in the classroom to play music for the children? We are working to convert to a digital music library for all of our classrooms, but need some equipment to make it happen. Only requirement is adequate space, view-able screen and Bluetooth capability. Thanks for checking!

Join us at Hall Family Farm on Saturday, October 21st from 9:30-11:30am for some family fun. There will be hay rides, games, activities, pumpkin picking, snacks, and much more. Tickets are $5 per child/adult ($20 max per family). Your ticket covers a hay ride and snacks at our preschool family tent. Purchase tickets in the Preschool Office any time over the next three weeks.

Eva Grace was born September 19th to the Caughran Family. Her big brother is Peter in the 2 day Threes, and alumni Issac and Nate.

You may be wondering what we do at Chapel time each week. The children meet Pastor Robert and I in the sanctuary for a time of singing, a Bible story, and prayer. It is a wonderful time where we hope they are learning that God made them and loves them more than they can imagine. Our themes for October are...

October is fire prevention month and we want everyone to be safe at home in case of a fire. It is important for families to discuss the dangers of fire, how to prevent them, and how to react to them. Visit the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) website at www.nfpa.org, and let Sparky the Fire Dog help kids learn about fire safety in an interactive way. The site offers fun and learning for nonreaders as well as readers.
1. Take time to talk about fire hazards in your home.
2. Plan an escape route in case a fire was to occur in your home.
3. Check your smoke detectors. Let your child hear what it sounds like.
4. Talk about stop-drop-roll to get out of a burning house.
5. Learn how to dial 911 in an emergency.
Local fire station #39 will be at our school during October to do a fire prevention program for the 3 and 4-year-olds. They will have the opportunity to meet the firemen and climb on the fire truck. |
