Keys:
+ House Energy & Commerce leaders Walden (R - Oregon) & Pallone Jr. (D - New Jersey) would like a hearing with the NCAA & companies connected to the developments. "The federal government's investigation into sports companies and basketball coaches at numerous colleges across the nation is extremely troubling and puts into serious question the NCAA's ability to oversee its own institutions. In addition to any criminal activities, these allegations raise concerns about the effects of these predatory schemes on youth athletes and how hidden financial connections between advertisers and endorsers influence young consumers. We are requesting that the NCAA and the involved companies brief the committee on the actions they are taking to ensure that similar schemes are not happening in other sports, and how they intend to prevent it from happening in the future." (link)
+ Oklahoma State dismisses MBB AHC Evans for his connection to the scandal. (link)
+ Multiple media outlets are reporting Louisville MBB HC Pitino is "Coach-2" in the federal complaints. (link)
+ Nike's statement after its EYBL offices were raided by the FBI on Wednesday, "Nike firmly believes in compliance with laws and fair play in all sports. There are no allegations against Nike in the complaints and we are committed to cooperating with any government investigation into this matter." (link)
National Narrative:
+ ESPN's Bilas: "While this is horribly unpleasant and far from over, I don't see meaningful change coming to college sports. The reason? Money. […] Do you believe the shoe companies will go away based upon this scandal? No way. They are partners with the NCAA and its member institutions. […] Do you believe that the NCAA can stop the influence of grassroots basketball or the AAU scene? No way. […] Do you believe that the NCAA will stop the influence of agents? No way. […] But in the absence of meaningful change regarding amateurism, there will be no meaningful change at all. We will all shake our heads and our fingers at the current scandal, give our full-throated speeches, and the NCAA will say 'threat to integrity' and 'antithetical to what college sports is about' and act righteously indignant. Then, we will all go on to the next game, and the NCAA will go on to the next big contract. Money will find a way. In NCAA sports, it always does." (link)
+ Yahoo's Wetzel goes in again, "The solution to college basketball's mess? Let players earn their market value." (link)
+ ESPN MBB analyst & former Duke standout Williams admits a former sports agency he worked for paid $250K to the AAU HC of former UCLA student-athlete & current NBA star Love. (link)
+ No surprise as attorney Heitner tweets, "Sources: NCAA investigators have been told to not discuss case with anyone & to not interfere in any way with FBI investigation." (link)
Arizona:
+ Former Wildcats AC & current UC Santa Barbara HC Pasternack now implicated in the complaints as having contact with sports agent Sood, though he's not directly connected to the bribery scheme. UA Prez Robbins has launched a full internal investigation. More details. (link)
Auburn:
+ Prez Leath says he's focused on the investigation into the allegations. When asked about the future of AD Jacobs, "I don't have the time or the bandwidth right now to speculate on what might happen in the future. I'm running the university, making sure the students are successful and dealing with these serious misconduct charges." (link)
+ ESPN's Goodman notes a likely presser today for MBB HC Pearl, though he does not expect it to include any updates on the developments. (link, link)
More Louisville
+ A day after placing AD Jurich & MBB HC Pitino on administrative leave, Prez Postel was in front of the state's budget review subcommittee on education. "We are not allowing current events and distractions to prevent the university from moving forward in the areas that are aligned with our mission and the needs of our community and students and faculty." (link)
+ Local reports indicate current MBB student-athletes would like AC Padgett to serve as Interim HC. An announcement is expected today on both an Interim MBB HC & Interim AD. (link)
+ A connected key issue in the Derby City is the financial state of affairs for the KFC YUM! Center. Arena Authority chairman Cox says the recent news around the Cards could make refinancing of the arena bonds more difficult. Concerned about the impact on MBB attendance, which partially goes to help pay off the venue's debt. (link)
+ The Courier-Journal's Sullivan on the tenure of UofL AD Jurich, "In many of the most meaningful ways, Tom Jurich was absolutely terrific at his job. His legacy at U of L will include broad-based competitive success, a high percentage of distinguished hires, a striking set of new structures, the stability of membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference and the status reflected by Lamar Jackson’s Heisman Trophy. Yet for all of his accomplishments, and for all of the unflagging loyalty he showed and has earned, Jurich’s personal style could be problematic. Operating with virtual autonomy and a damn-the-torpedoes approach, he made numerous enemies by his bullying and combative statements that proved counterproductive. He was sometimes dismissive of fair criticism and legitimate concerns and more than once exposed his program to potential embarrassment by reacting to red flags as if they were green lights." (link)
+ WSJ's Berman, a native Louisvillian, "Three years from now, there will be a new team with a new coach. It will probably be mediocre and success will be playing for an 11 tournament seed, not a 1. Will the program be what it once was? No. But in an odd way, hitting bottom may make the whole thing fun again. He who has hope has everything." (link)
+ The Daily Press' Teel wonders if ACC leaders are remiss about admitting Louisville to the league, notes suspension, sanction or explosion decisions need the support of at least 11 members. (link); The Courant's Jacobs says UConn should be ready in case UofL gets pushed out. (link)
Miami (FL)
+ Prospective student-athlete Little, who has been connected to both the Hurricanes & Wildcats, says he never asked for any money in the recruiting process, nor was he ever approached about a deal. (link)
Oklahoma State:
+ The Tulsa World's Cooper indicates MBB HC Boynton is expected to lead his squad in its first practice today as he has not been implicated in any reports. (link)
USC:
+ The Orange County Register's Wolf: "At what point will USC basketball coach Andy Enfield make a statement about the scandal engulfing his program? […] This is also the first test for Athletic Director Lynn Swann. Considering Swann has already expressed displeasure around USC over the football team’s play despite its 4-0 start, it’s not hard to imagine him being upset with Enfield for far more serious problems." (link)
Elsewhere:
+ Kansas' massive new deal with Adidas, reported to be 14 years with a value of $191M, is not technically signed yet & Assoc. AD for Public Affairs Marchiony says there's still one item to be squared away in the contract that is connected to the current developments. (link); Here's the video the Jayhawks pushed on Twitter to announce the new deal with Three Stripes. (link)
+ Ohio State's Holtmann: "I have great respect for all of those that intend to do this right way and have done it the right way. There are certainly types of things that, quite honestly, I think we’ve had to walk away from and I’m grateful that I work for an athletic director here and I worked for an athletic director at Butler who not only empowered me to do that, but it was the expectation." (link)
+ Indiana's Miller: "I think our relationship with Adidas over the course of not only his [AD Glass] tenure but his short tenure has been great. We look forward to continuing it. But we have no reason to believe anything else." (link)
+ HCs from UConn, Yale, Hartford, Central Connecticut State & Sacred Heart were together at an event yesterday, provided various viewpoints on the issues. (link)
+ Illinois' Underwood: "From our first conversation in March, Athletic Director Josh Whitman and I have shared a mutual commitment to Illinois men's basketball upholding the highest standards of integrity. I appreciate his ongoing encouragement and support. I stand ready to assist as needed to protect the game of basketball, and those who play it, on our campus and elsewhere." (link)
+ Minnesota's Pitino has not been contacted by investigators. (link)
+ Georgia's Fox: "I’m not surprised. It confirms what we probably already felt like was happening in our game. […] We’re going to do this job in an honorable way. We’re not going to put the university at risk. We’re not going to put the kids at risk. We’re going to work as hard as we can to do this job the right way. We’ve got to find kids that will buy into doing it that way. I think we have a team that has certainly bought in this year." (link)
+ Georgia Tech FB HC Johnson: "When the FBI/CBB stuff broke, for once in my life, I said I'm glad we're with Russell Athletic." (link)

Nebraska: Turnkey Search gets the assignment to aid the Huskers in hiring a new AD. Fee: $125K. NU statement: "We are looking forward to working with the firm and in completing a successful search." (link); Huskers Interim AD Rimington: "As an interim, you don’t want to go and micromanage in a situation when you’re going to be gone in 30-60 days. You can’t get in there and get under the hood because there’s no way, with 24 sports, that you’re going to be able to do that. … My leadership style is going to have to be hands off. I will be here to put out fires. If something good happens, I will be here to acknowledge that. If something bad happens, we’ll get it corrected quickly." (link)
News came early yesterday of Alabama State AD Hines' resignation, though he could stick with the Hornets through the end of the year as no final work date has been squared away. Hines permanently took over at ASU in September of 2015, though he oversaw the department on an interim basis stitching all the way back to 2012. Hines' tenure in Montgomery has been marked by NCAA issues & a bit of HC drama, but also a fair amount of winning within his portfolio. (link)
Buffalo AD Greene indicates the $18M build of a new field house is made possible thanks to $6M in private giving & the rest from College FB Playoff distributions via a 15-year financing plan. Greene indicates the announcement of the new facility & the discontinuation of sport programs are "mutually exclusive" events & notes the availability of the space to overall campus for intramurals, sport clubs & by the general UB student population. (link)
As a bellwether of the media climate toward New Mexico, Interim Prez Abdallah had to voice his support for former AD Krebs' usage of university funds to attend the MBB Final Four after a local news report earlier in the week called the practice into question. Abdallah: "There are returns to the athletic department and the university that are reflected in benefits such as opportunities to raise private funds to benefit student-athletes and support improved and new facilities. Involvement in national committees also elevates the profile of the University and allows the AD to develop the necessary relationships to recruit and retain coaching and other staff — in Paul Krebs’ case this resulted in a prestigious appointment to the NCAA basketball committee. Having UNM represented at the Final Four, or events such as the MWC tournament, does provide a public benefit." (link)
Cash: Texas donors ponied up $56.6M in FY17, setting a new department record by over $8M more than the previous high water mark ($48.5M). (link); If I'm reading this chart right, giving totals at Louisville have ranged from $34.56M to $44.45M over the past five years with FY17 producing $42.16M. (link); Iowa is more than half way to a $25M goal for east end zone upgrades to Kinnick Stadium. (link); $100K will get you 10-year rights to a room at the new hotel & conference center less than 100 yards from the gates of Texas A&M's Kyle Field. Prez Sharp expects to get $20M for naming rights to the venue. (link)
Going Up: The Arizona Board of Regents gave the go-ahead for $66M for four athletic facilities projects yesterday, including the construction of an Indoor Sports Center and improvements to Arizona Stadium, Hillenbrand Aquatic Center and Hillenbrand Softball Stadium. The McKale Center will also get $1.5M in renovated lockerrooms. The indoor space, which will have a 90-yard field and 65-foot tall ceiling, will serve all of the department's programs at a building cost of $18M and shovels will hit the ground in May. $25M for two phases at Arizona Stadium to start in January with completion date of "in time for the 2019 football season." $15M for a new pool and plumbing at the Aquatic Center and $8M for a complete renovation at softball. (link); NC State is the latest to build a "basketball dorm," with construction of Case Commons delayed a year, but to be completed by August 2019. The $15M facility will house 65 students, with nine single and 13 double rooms for non-athletes and 26 singles and two double rooms for student-athletes at a per bed coast of $154K, which for comparisons sake, is 3x the average of other rooms on campus. (link); Southern Utah's Centrum Arena will henceforth be called America First Credit Union Even Center as the new sponsor agreed to a $1.5M deal over 10 years for the naming rights. It is the largest cash agreement in SUU athletics history and the first time a corporate sponsor is part of a naming-rights deal for the Thunderbirds. (link)
Kansas State launched its "Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Initiative," a five-year comprehensive plan for the student-athletes and staff that is meant to "cultivate an atmosphere that embraces and celebrates diversity, while also intentionally promoting and practicing inclusion." Director of Student-Athlete Development Dunn: "This isn't about numbers or statistics. It's about people and empowering people. Really the goal is to create an environment that's welcoming, that celebrates people's uniqueness and allows people to be who they are. We want to encourage our coaches, student-athletes, staff and administrators to see their unique qualities as strengths and utilize them to create better outcomes. Because we know when we're able to be our true selves, that's when we're able to be our absolute best. Our mission as educators and coaches is to help develop our student-athletes holistically so that they can be the absolute best version of themselves they can be. But how can we expect them to build confidence and reach their potential when they have to hide or be ashamed of the very things that make them unique?" AD Taylor calls it "phenomenal." (link)
ESPN/OTT: Arkansas Asst. Dean & Assoc. Professor Dittmore pens for AthleticDirectorU on the looming Altice-ESPN carriage fee standoff & what it could mean for the future of college sports broadcasting. Weaves together the narrative of the marketplace, as well as Stadium's intro to the scene, which could grow to 100+ DMAs in an over-the-air (OTA) fashion if/when the Sinclair-Tribune Media merger is complete. With the rise of OTT & ESPN's nearing play, wonders when consumers will ask, "Honey, did we remember to pay the ESPN bill this month?" (link); Rice inks a deal with FloSports for coverage of FB, MBB & WBB games. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
USA Today's Wolken catches up with Liberty Prez Falwell Jr. on his claims of getting denied access to an FBS league due to the university's religious beliefs, which he says is illegal. "It would be like opposing a school because it’s a historically black institution. We called governors and attorney generals and various states where these schools were located. One attorney general wanted to go after one of the presidents, but I said, we won't get in a conference through legal action so we didn’t encourage them to do that. […] …it was a major antitrust violation for schools to try to keep Liberty out based on nothing other than disagreement on religious and political issues. But it worked out better for us to become an independent an[d] the NCAA, I’m so grateful for their support and their understanding in why Liberty was getting a raw deal." Sun Belt Commish Benson says the Flames weren't admitted to his league due to geographic, not religious reasons. No comment from C-USA boss MacLeod. More. (link)
After watching Florida A&M's FB game against North Carolina Central last night, MEAC Commish Thomas was highly complimentary of the job FAMU AD Overton has done since taking over. Thomas: "I have to give Milton kudos. He’s come in and worked really, really hard to bring all the constituent groups together and move it forward in a very positive direction. He’s been able to provide financial good stewardship in terms of the budget. I’ve been very pleased with what I’ve seen Milton has done in a short period of time." Thomas also credited much of the conference's recent resurgence with its TV deal with ESPN, which has been in place since 2005, and talked about the success the Celebration Bowl has enjoyed. Thomas: "Any time you can be on ABC, in the first bowl of the season – and now it’ll be in Mercedes-Benz after the last two were in the Georgia Dome. Both years had crowds of over 33,000 people there. It’s just a win-win. It’s an absolute a great bowl experience for student athletes, fans and alumni. We’re very pleased as a conference with the kind of exposure and branding the celebration bowl have brought." (link)
Former Louisiana AD Farmer named AD at DII UT Permian Basin. Prez Woodley: "Scott brings a wealth of experience and a proven record of accomplishment for building successful athletics programs." Farmer, who exited Lafayette in November of last year, with a pretty standard quote, "It’s an exciting time to be a member of the UTPB family. I would like to thank Dr. Woodley and the search committee for the opportunity to lead this department. Dr. Woodley’s vision for UTPB and its athletics department makes it a great time to be here. Jackie and I look forward to working with and spending time with the great people within the University and the Permian Basin." (link)
The Chicago Tribune's Greenstein profiles "elusive" Northwestern donor Ryan, whose name highlights a new facility growth for the Wildcats. Greenstein: "Ryan is to Northwestern what T. Boone Pickens is to Oklahoma State and Phil Knight is to Oregon — only with a lower profile. Ryan rarely grants interviews." NU Prez Schapiro: "The only problem I ever have with the Ryans is that I always want to honor them, and their natural inclination is to say no. They don't want the party. I had to beg them to put their name on the Pat and Shirley Ryan Center for the Musical Arts." More. (link); Greenstein also gets comments from former FB HC Barnett on his tenure in Evanston, including the time he interviewed for the Notre Dame job, but didn't get an offer because, "I told them that I didn't grow up wanting to coach at Notre Dame. I grew up wanting to beat Notre Dame." (link)
Here's what the Dallas Morning News' Baby says he learned from the College FB Playoff's mock selection process, "The message is clear: Teams interested in playing in the four-team CFP tournament need to worry about scheduling (and winning) marquee 'power five' games instead of playing weaker teams to pad win totals and keep fresh for conference play. [...] In December, quality wins look better than conference titles. It's something athletic directors and coaches should keep in mind when looking for teams to play in future Septembers." (link)
More Personnel: Oregon State AD Barnes with a quartet of promotions: former MBB student-athlete turned Asst. Dir. of Annual Giving Bjornstad is now Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff; Assoc. AD for Business Ops Bruns gets the Assoc. AD/CFO title; Interim Dir. of IT De Quilettes gets the permanent title; and Greulich, previously the Dir. of Facilities and Event Ops, will now be Asst. AD for Facilities and Event Operations. (link); Longtime Norfolk State Baseball HC Clark, who also served as Asst. AD for External Affairs, announced his resignation yesterday, will pursue a job as the Dir. of Development for Norfolk Festevents. (link); New Mexico State FB HC Martin gets a three-year extension to a contract that was due up at the end of this season. No additional financial details were provided. (link)
In an effort to increase exposure for the program, the Iowa State wrestling team practiced outside of Jack Trice Stadium before the Cyclones took on Texas in FB last night. HC Dresser, who started the idea for the unorthodox practices while he was at Virginia Tech, says the outdoor practices are a great way for fans to connect and learn about the program: "It sure helps when it’s sunny and 75 degrees. It was a great day for us to get out here and showcase our guys a little bit. Our guys like it and our fans love it. We do a lot of hard things in cold months so to get outside and do something hard on a nice sunny day is great." AD Pollard: "It’s really fun, these guys are thinking of stuff nonstop, so that makes it really enjoyable as an administrator. Second, I think it just speaks to being contemporary. They understand that the sport needs this, the sport has to grow. It’s more than Iowa State, this is bigger than that. The sport needs Iowa State to be big, bold and loud. That’s what they’re doing." (link)
Also Noticed: For the first time in 35 years Eastern Washington & Montana won't meet on the gridiron next year as the Big Sky has to move some pieces around to fit Idaho back into the league. (link); Iowa State's Prez search is down to four, though we still don't have any names. The quartet will all visit campus early next month. (link); Eastern Michigan & The Aspire Group have tied the knot further. Deal now extends through 2023. (link);  UAB and Georgia FB will meet in Athens in 2021, Blazers' AD Ingram calls it an "incredible opportunity for our team." (link); More UAB as the Blazers will don the names of hospitalized children on their back of their jerseys for a matchup with Louisiana Tech next month. (link); Arizona FB student-athlete Young was arrested on domestic violence charges. (link)
