Hello All,

We have been busy over here at Spaceship Media and wanted to catch you up! Here are some updates on our most recent projects!

Cheers and thank you,
Eve & Jeremy

Feeding the Future: A conversation about food and people

A conversation we designed in partnership with Minnesota Public Radio is off the ground; it’s part of a larger project their environment reporter Elizabeth Dunbar is doing called, Feeding the Future. For MPR, the conversation brought together large-scale conventional farmers and small-scale organic farmers and their customers. We’re looking forward to hearing the stories that come out of this conversation!

Talking Across Borders: A conversation about
immigration enforcement

We are winding up an immigration conversation, Talking Across Borders, that we ran in partnership with Univision and Digital First Media’s two California divisions, Bay Area News Group and Southern California News Group. We are grateful for the Bettinger News Innovation Grant Fund for their support of the project. One of our favorite pieces from Talking Across Borders is this one, which grew out of a thread in which the participants drafted their own immigration reform proposals.

Project Home Room

We’re now designing a project around race and the achievement gap in partnership with The Seattle Times’ Education Lab. This one will bring together K-12 educators and parents of students of color. We were up in Seattle last week strategizing with their excellent team and expect that conversation to launch in mid October.

Tackling the Gap: Examining the achievement gap between white and black students in Alabama

Tackling the Gap, the project we ran in Alabama with teachers around achievement gap, continues to generate stories for Al.com and, in a slight twist of our model, that group has remained open, and is being managed and supported by the team down in Birmingham.

Updates from Mission Control

Crossing new horizons

We are just now launching a slightly different sort of group, bringing together journalists who are part of a Bay Area media collaborative organized by Renaissance Journalism with community members with a range of perspectives and views on housing. We are focusing on using a Facebook conversation to strengthen connections between journalists and news organizations and the people they cover in relation to the housing issue, as well as generating stories for the project.

Growing the Spaceship team!

We were lucky to have had the benefit of a hard-working and capable intern from San Francisco State this summer — Kaylee Fagan. She produced the video below, which video lives on our home page, among many other things. And we’re happy to say we have hired her to work with us as much as she can as she finishes up her last year of school.
