Third Tuesday Book Club

Come to our next Third Tuesday Book Club meeting on Oct 17th at 6:30pm.

We’ll be discussing Cheyenne Autumn by Mari Sandoz.

Preloaded Kindle Ereader Now Available

Did you know that you can access 20,000 ebooks on a Kindle (or smartphone, iPad, etc.) through our Nebraska OverDrive site? Stop by the library for help in getting started.

Or...check out a preloaded Kindle device. We're putting one popular book on a kindle located on top of our circulation desk each week. This is a great opportunity to try an ereader without going through the rigamarole of electronic check-out. Just hand it to us for checkout like a regular book.
Mark Your November Calendar

On Tuesday, November 21st at 6:30pm, we're be hosting Dan Holtz's "All Original, All Nebraska" program at the library. "Holtz celebrates and commemorates people, places, and events in Nebraska history through original songs (accompanied by guitar and harmonica) and the stories and background behind them."

This is free and open to the public. Come have a good time listening to music and stories!

This program is one of many available to non-profit and educational organizations through the Speakers Bureau of Humanities Nebraska (http://humanitiesnebraska.org). Local funding by our own Friends of the Library.
This month we added 19 Elephant and Piggie early reader books, thanks to a donation from Valmont. They're flying off the shelves!
From the Youth Librarian's Desk

My name is Sydney Groh, and I’m pleased to be the new Youth Services Librarian. I’ve had a lot of fun my first month here getting to know the community, and I’m looking forward to the months ahead!

During the Tuesday after-school program in cooperation with the YMCA this last month, we’ve made “Cootie Catchers,” t-shirt bags, and played fun games. Looking forward to what’s coming up this month in the after-school program, games, books, and crafts are usually going to be part of the plan, but I also plan to have a Halloween party after school (3:30-6:00) on the 31st! Costumes are welcome; I’ll be wearing one!  Students from kindergarten to fifth grade are encouraged to participate.

In addition to the after-school program on Tuesdays, this month you will usually be able to catch me at my desk on Fridays. The one exception is Friday the 20th. Instead, I will be hosting the monthly story time on Saturday the 21st. Come with your little ones at 10:30 for a story, an activity, and a snack!
Teen Read Week Raffle

Teen Read Week is this month, from the 8th to the 14th. In celebration of teen library users, we will be holding a raffle open to ages 13-18. Simply fill out a short slip with your age, contact information, and why you came to visit the library, and you will be entered for a chance to win one of three prizes: two Dairy Queen gift cards and The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. This is running now through the 14th of October.
New Teen Nonfiction Section

We have an almost entirely new Young Adult (or teen) Nonfiction section thanks to state funding of the project. Since the teen years mark the transition from childhood to adulthood, topics of special interest include: general health, mental health, dating, self-expression, religion, careers and higher education, and civic engagement. Where great differences exist in personal outlooks–such as politics and religion–we have tried to be representative of the diversity of teens and their families.

Come check these books out, whether you’re a teen or you’re looking to start a conversation with your teen.

Website Redesign
Our library's website has been redesigned to be less cluttered and easier to use. Come take a look at http://libraries.ne.gov/valley/. It's a great way to stay up to speed with library events.
Bulletin Board Relocation

We've moved our bulletin boards to the entrance area. Much better visibility!

Please leave items to be posted at the circulation desk. Our director, Garren, will determine whether to post them and for how long, according to a rather wordy policy we have on the subject. The short version is that nonprofit and educational materials are likely to be accepted. Businesses located within Valley can post about special events or promotions. Religious events are okay too! Partisan political materials aren't allowed. (Consult our policy manual at the circulation desk or on our website for the full details.)
