Hello <<First Name>>!

How you going? Hope you've had the most marvellous weekend!  Lots of things are happening over at the Happy Biome Headquarters. I've just become a fully qualified and accredited Nutritional Medicine Practitioner with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society. We had a fun and inspiring (and fully-booked-out!) DIY workshop last night making natural hygiene and suncare products and learning to go low-tox. And we've just had the most qualified and amazing natural therapist join our team! Read more below about Jo's magic healing treatments :)

**NOTICE: Please note, that the Happy Biome Studio will be closed this coming Saturday (7 Oct) as I will be up holding a stall at the Living Lightly Expo from 11am-1:30pm at the Devonport Community House. This event is definitely worth attending - there will be a bunch of interactive stalls and activities teaching you easy and cheap ways to live a more sustainable life. There will also be lots of FREEBIES! I'll be giving away some DIY cleaning product samples which you get to make at the stall, plus I'll have all my products for sale if you need to stock up on anything.

Love and light,

Dr. Filipa Bellette

Happy Biome Studio
Sat 9 Sept, 2 – 4:30 pm
Cost per person: $45.00

Research shows that embracing the colour green – and in particular, in the form of plant life – has positive impacts on stress levels and heart health by lowering cortisol levels, blood pressure and sympathetic nerve activity. Similarly,  research also shows that finding your creative flow is a healing force, helping us resolve both biological issues, as well as emotional ones, and in particular, stress-related conditions.

Artist and gardening-lover, Sarah, from Sarah Mae Designs, has joined forces with Filipa from Happy Biome to present a creative earth therapies workshop to help you deal with stress. Both Sarah and Filipa have worked through health issues by reconnecting with the earth and embracing their creative flow.

This workshop is for anyone who loves succulents (or plant life in general), exploring their creative side or for anyone wanting a new way to cope with stress.

During the workshop you will make 3 different succulent planters;

  • A ceramic planter
  • A cork magnet planter
  • A vintage book planter

The ceramic planters will give you a chance to let your creative side flow as you draw onto the ceramics with specialised markers, which once set in the oven are super durable! Sarah will guide you through the process of designing your ceramic planter, with lots of resource books available if you aren’t sure what to draw.

The cork fridge magnet planter is the cutest thing since peacock jumping spiders! (do look these guys up if you haven’t before, even if you hate spiders). This part of the workshop will give you a chance to learn more about succulents and their awesome properties, as well as plant a super tiny succulent in a super tiny planter!

Finally, the vintage book planter will allow you to revamp an old book into an awesome planter, which if you choose to will make an interesting garden installation that degrades over time to feed your garden’s biome. If you want to keep your book intact however, it will look fantastic as a book end or a table centrepiece!

No supplies or previous experience is required, just register and show up! The workshop runs for 2.5 hours and is $45, which covers all supplies, plants, planters, soil, information booklet, paleo treats and herbal tea. There will be an option to purchase more succulents or materials to make more planters at home, as well as art prints by Sarah Mae Designs. Where else can you draw, relax and plant?!

These spicy sprouted chickpeas make a yummy snack, or a tasty side to your meal. I love soaking and sprouting my beans (and also nuts and seeds), because it turns dormant food into LIVING food! Soaking and sprouting beans, nuts, seeds, and grains make a difficult to digest food more digestible. These foods evolved with the idea NOT to be eaten (at least by insects, birds, and the like). They are protected with chemical-binders (such as phytic acid) that digestive enzymes find difficult to loosen. Not only that, phytic acid leaches calcium, magnesium, iron, copper and zinc from our bodies. Soaking and sprouting neutralises this nasty acid; they also deactivate aflatoxins – potential carcinogens – in grains.

Moistening the seed for a few days activates the plant’s own enzymes – including phytase, which digests phytates – to soften the seed, free up bound nutrients, and even create new ones by converting stored starch and fatty acids into proteins and vitamins. In particular, sprouting increases the amount of B vitamins and carotene; vitamin C is also created in the process. Sprouting can also help ease flatulence from eating beans because the complex sugars responsible for intestinal gas are broken down into simpler glucose molecules. Sprouting also alkalises legumes that are often acid-forming.

You can soak any kind of seed you want, from chickpeas to spelt berries to almonds or sunflower seeds. Here’s how to do it:

Spicy Sprouted Chickpeas

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried chick peas*
  • 2 cups filtered water
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Method

  • Put chickpeas in a jar and cover with water. Add a pinch of sea salt. Cover the jar with a cloth and leave to soak overnight.
  • Pour water out of the jar and leave chickpeas in the jar to sprout – this can take up to four days. Be sure to rinse the chickpeas twice a day with filtered water to stop from going mouldy.
  • Once sprouted, place chickpeas in a bowl and mix with cumin and olive oil.
  • Place on a baking tray and bake at 180 degrees celsius for 10min, or until golden brown.

*You can substitute chickpeas with any legumes, nuts or seeds.
