Late Friday night, the NCAA & participating conferences asked for the Alston & Jenkins cases to be dismissed. USA Today's Berkowitz with a run down, "...in Friday night’s filing that the plaintiffs in the two ongoing cases are now asking Wilken 'to strip the NCAA of that latitude, ignore binding legal precedent, and, in doing so, fundamentally alter college sports. … It is not often that recent published authority from a higher court directly addresses a nearly identical challenge … but that is the case here.'" Further supporting arguments: 1) "Schools make a strong effort to support athletes’ education and those efforts would be undermined if caps on athlete compensation were lifted"; and, 2) "The NCAA’s limits on athlete compensation promote consumer demand." Lots more. (link); Berkowitz also provides updates on pending concussion lawsuits, points to Florida, Purdue & Weber State as DI institutions who could face "significant legal scrutiny concerning their handling of head injuries." Again, more. (link)
AL.com's Scarbinsky says he "stands by my story" that Auburn leadership is preparing to make an AD change. Scarbinsky tweeted the update after Prez Leath released a statement late Friday night, "The report is inaccurate. Jay Jacobs is the athletics director, and I have had no such conference call with the Board of Trustees." The article also now mentions UConn AD Benedict as a possible candidate should there be a search given his previous tenure on The Plains. (link)
Louisville: The Board of Trustees have called a special meeting for 9am tomorrow to discuss the MBB situation, as well as the Presidential search & university accreditation updates. (link); FB HC Petrino on AD Jurich after a win yesterday over Murray State, "I can’t say enough about what he’s meant to me and my family. Besides being my boss, he’s my real close friend. So we’re hoping he’ll be back." (link); Courier-Journal columnist Sullivan: "Some big hitters lining up behind suspended #Louisville AD Tom Jurich. Board of Trustees meeting Monday should be lively." (link); WDRB's Crawford runs down questions that still remain from the week, like who exactly will be named Interim AD, a post he says both Asst. AD/SWA Herring & Assoc. AD for Student Life Simatocolous both turned down when offered. Senior Assoc. AD/SID Klein looked to be the choice as of Friday. Crawford also wonders what happens with the recently-announced Adidas deal. (link)
The father of a former Louisville MBB student-athlete pens for the New York Post under a pseudonym, says a rival of UofL's offered him $100K for his son's services. "Adidas started sponsoring my son’s AAU team when he was about 13. While we still had to drive to tournaments, they paid for hotels, meals and, of course, all of the gear and sneakers. At the time, I was struggling financially, so Adidas’ support was truly a godsend for us. […] Quite honestly, we never let the Adidas rep get too close to us, but I’ve watched it with players who didn’t have a stable home. Families get preyed upon by sneaker reps all of the time. I know we weren’t the norm. We were the exception." Further, the father says, "There is real human collateral damage here," hopes the NCAA gets cleaned up as a result. (link)

Interesting read & perspective for FB student-athletes who may think of the Canadian Football League as an option to make some money. In the case of former Tennessee student-athlete Hefney, who played for the Montreal Alouettes, the collective agreement between the league and the CFLPA stopped covering procedures for him 12 months after he sustained an in-game injury and because of Canadian laws that state no professional athlete is eligible for workers' health benefits in any province. Hefney: "The NFL, they’re going to make sure you’re straight until you’re healthy, and I feel like the CFL should do me the same way until I’m healthy, to find out what I’ve got going on. They should always just look out for me, at least pay for my surgeries, pay for my therapy, and I can handle everything else." More. (link)

The Lincoln Journal Star's editorial board pens on the open AD chair for Nebraska, argues the university "must hire a candidate who understands the realities and challenges of this particular job – and the high expectations that accompany it." The position points out the state has the second smallest population for one housing a 'Power 5' program, which means the vast majority of student-athlete talent comes from some distances away. In closing, "...the new hire must have the experience to overcome a map that doesn’t favor Nebraska. Doing so will almost certainly require both past success as a Division I athletic director and being a quick study, given the statewide pride and investment in Husker athletics. The clock is ticking. The stakes are high. We trust university leadership will make the right hire at yet another critical crossroads for Husker athletics." (link)
At least five New Mexico FB student-athletes went to a knee for the National Anthem at halftime of yesterday's contest with Air Force. Both squads were on the field for the anthem as a result of a weather delay, which dictated the anthem's move to intermission. Lobos HC Davie says he was not informed the anthem would be played & had agreed with Falcons HC Calhoun there wouldn't be a rendition. Davie: "I wouldn’t want to judge or have too much of a critique, at least speaking from my standpoint, as far as a total football team. Because in fairness to them, I never really talked to them about it." Calhoun: "That’s their right. They live in a country where they’re allowed to do that." (link); Here's how the NBA has advised its clubs how to handle the anthem situation. Worth a read as you may want to employ some of the same tactics. (link)
South Carolina WBB will get an invite to visit the White House, per state Governor Haley. On Friday, Gamecocks HC Staley commented, "We haven't gotten an invitation yet, and that in itself speaks volumes. We won before those other teams won their championships. I don't know what else has to happen." (link)
Yahoo's Forde & Thamel take stock of FB action from the weekend, talked to Pac-12 Commish Scott about Friday night/Saturday morning's USC-Washington State barnburner that stretched into the wee hours. Scott: "We don’t live in a perfect world. We’d all love to get all the value and benefits of our television partners, and we could choose the time that we play. We’re not in that situation. [...] We’re very, very valuable to our broadcast partners, when we’re able to kick after seven [Pacific Time]. There’s no other major conferences who play at that hour." The pair also review potential hot seats, the ascendance of Maryland OC Bell, plus the rise of UCF & more. (link)
ESPN VP of College Sports Fitting tweeted yesterday, "Any school that wants to host @CollegeGameDay, take notes from Va Tech and its crowd and setting." (link); Here's video of said "crowd and setting," as Hokies faithful flooded the Alumni Mall starting early yesterday morning to get a spot for the national spotlight. Creative signs galore. (link)
Speaking of ESPN, the Worldwide Leader is clearly executing on plans to continue winning its fair share of eyeballs during the early morning & late night in the new media environment. Notable anchor Van Pelt has been ingrained at midnight & the new morning show featuring notable names Greenberg, Beadle & Rose is set to hit the airwaves later this year. "We’re now several years into ESPN’s plan to turn its SportsCenter franchise into a series of individualized shows catered to the personalities that front them." (link)

Texas Tech AD & College FB Playoff chair Hocutt Q&As on a number of items surrounding the CFP. Of note, says former Oklahoma FB HC Stoops would be an excellent addition in the future, talks about the balance needed as the chairman to still engage in critical discussions, but also appropriately guiding the group. Overall: "It's a system that, ESPN has shared with us, has over 80 percent approval rate from the general public. It's a system that's proven to work. As we do more and more mock selections, as people become comfortable with the process, it will only grow. No changes or recommendations I would provide. And we do have an annual opportunity to make any changes we would make to the commissioners." (link)
The Pantagraph's Tupper wonders how the MBB recruiting saga, which includes former Oklahoma State AC Evans, who was hired by former Pokes & current Illinois HC Underwood, could impact the Illini. Earlier in the week, AD Whitman, "We watched with the rest of the country as news unfolded regarding alleged corruption in corners of major college basketball. We have continued to monitor the situation…and are not aware of any information to suggest involvement in (these) allegations by any member of our men's basketball staff. We will support any and all efforts to ensure the integrity of our great game." Tupper: "Could Evans have been working an illegal side hustle without Underwood’s knowledge? The answer is yes, it’s possible. […] Where it goes from here is part of the great unknown." (link)
Golden State Warriors HC Kerr also chimes in on the current state of affairs, "There’s a reason I coach in the NBA. I never wanted to be a college coach. I don’t immerse myself in that stuff. The NBA is very pure. We don’t want to make apologies or concessions about what we’re doing. We’re just playing basketball. It’s a business and the NCAA obviously has lots of things to figure out on many levels who they are and what they’re doing." (link)
Youngstown State received $1M from the Covellis and will name the Covelli Sports Complex in their honor. The complex will house Soccer, T&F, Softball and a proposed new tennis center. AD Strollo: "The addition of this complex places YSU’s soccer, track-and-field, softball and tennis facilities among the best in the Horizon League. Having our teams play their games right here on campus, as opposed to off-campus venues, creates energy and excitement across the university, improving the college experience for all students." (link)
The way the Jewish calendar falls this year Yom Kippur began Friday night at sundown and continued into yesterday, obviously a college football Saturday, so Jewish FB student-athletes nationwide had a decision to make. Nebraska long-snapper Ober, earlier in the week: "I am very serious about my religion, but I am also serious about my job. I spoke with my rabbi and with God by myself. I do not want to let my teammates down." (link)
Also Noticed: A leak at Kyle Field during yesterday's Texas A&M-South Carolina matchup meant fans had to leave the facility to use the bathroom. (link); Zing of the Day from Troy's Twitter feed, "Hey @LSU, thanks for having us down for homecoming! We really enjoyed it! :)" (link); Following up on the Trojans' win at LSU, the $985K payday was the largest away game granted for a winning squad so far this season. (link); The plane-with-a-message strategy was employed over ECU's Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium yesterday calling for the exit of AD Compher. (link)
