Greg Major's Flood Story

Out of town when the water rose...

by Greg Major, Sales and Project Manager at Aggregate Technologies

When Hurricane Harvey arrived, I was on my way to Atlanta, Georgia, to drop off my daughter’s car. She had been staying with me while her husband is deployed, and for a normal hurricane this would have been a good plan!

While there, we saw that it wasn’t going to be just a normal hurricane passing through, so I was in close touch with my neighbor. Last year on the “Tax Day flood” we saw water come up our driveways to our garage and stop, and we figured at first that is what would happen here.

Soon it became apparent the water would not stop and would keep right on rising. My neighbor and I talked and he and his sons volunteered to go into my house and raise as much stuff as they could. They did that and I am happy to say I didn’t lose too many personal items. The water got only about 8” high and receded a short time later. (My experience is different than those affected by the Addicks and Barker reservoirs who had water standing for days in some cases. Cypress Creek flooding is what affected me.)

The real story in this isn’t my stuff getting flooded, but the sense of community. I was stranded in Atlanta because both Houston Intercontinental and Hobby Airports were closed indefinitely. My neighbor said crews were going through the neighborhood “mucking” or removing carpet, furniture, sheet rock, etc. and on Friday a group from the LDS church was across the street doing a members house and they volunteered to do mine. They removed all the soaked furniture and carpet from my house.

I had been intending on buying a new pickup, and I figured I might have as well get one in Atlanta because at least I know it hasn’t been in a flood. So I bought a truck and with my high school son and two of his football buddies drove back to Houston.

Our Aggregate Technologies team is great. I was the only one that flooded in the company, fortunately, and bright and early on the Saturday after Hurricane Harvey 15 ATI employees arrived with tools and expertise and removed all doors, baseboards, and 2' of sheet rock. When they left, my house was ready for new sheet rock, flooring, baseboards, etc. It was truly amazing to see what they were able to do. Many hands make light work! On Sunday the Houston Curling Club members came by and helped clean, and on Monday a group from my church Christ the Redeemer came by and cleaned some more!

All the time people were driving up and down the street with food, water, supplies, etc. We never had to fix lunch or dinner - people just brought it by. One afternoon an SUV stopped and the couple asked me how many box fans did I need and I said two. I asked what organization they were with, and they said they weren't with any organization. They just went out to towns away from Houston and bought every box fan they could and are just driving around giving them away, and to let them know if I need more.

This spirit of can-do and people helping each other, the church groups, individuals, etc. is was I want people to know about my flood story. It is sad that people’s houses flooded, and I was very fortunate. But seeing all the good in people is what I want people to think about. Thank you all for hearing my flood story.
