Cypress Cycle Club
Grangewood Park, meet by the playground
Sunday, 15 October, 10am

A change of season brings a change of scenery - this month's family cycling session starts at Grangewood Park in stead of our usual South Norwood Lakes. This session is an Intermediate ride (total distance approx 4 miles, recommended age 6+ years) with a mix of off-road and quiet back streets. Our destination is the fantastic new BMX track at Norbury Park, via Grangewood Park, The Lawns and Biggin Woods. All children must be accompanied by a responsible adult (although the BMXing is optional for both). Bring water/squash and a snack and keep an eye on the weather forecast. The oute is fairly hilly so a bike with gears is recommended. For those with surplus energy, there is an option to continue towards Tooting, Balham or Mitcham.

Crystal Palace Food Market, Haynes Lane

Our Transitioner of the Month - meet Rosemary from the Edible Garden!

"I saw the Edible Garden stall at the Crystal Palace Overground festival and was impressed by the enthusiasm of the person I spoke to. I thought it would be good for me to try. I think I have been volunteering now for about two years. It's so true what they say - it's good to be at one with the earth!

I enjoy planting and watching stuff grow, and then of course eating some or taking whatever we have to the market stall. I find it so satisfying! I am always totally relaxed and de-stressed when I have been working in the gardens. Of course meeting other people and enjoying their company is a bonus, as are the lovely picnics we have in the summer. Even the robins join us! I even enjoy wrapping up warm and being there on cold winter days.

I have lived in the area for 32 years. I don't feel the need to move as I love being near the Triangle and can't think of anywhere better for me."

If you'd like to be our Transitioner of the Month in October, send us an email, we'd love to meet you: newsletter@crystalpalacetransition.org.uk

Crystal Scientifique
Tuesday, 3 October 8pm
Antenna Café, Haynes Lane (entrance at the top of Bedwardine Road)
Informal science discussion group, free entry and cash bar

(no need to book)

The next science evening in Crystal Palace is on complexity!

Human culture has provided many tools which have enabled us to get greater leverage from our given 'wetware'. Tools that allow our radically simplifying brains to get to grips with complexity are desperately needed - to help us deal with climate change, take the next steps in biology, in ecology, for smart cities, and in many other fields.

This will be a short, provocative talk with no mathematics which will hopefully lead to interesting discussion.

The speaker, Dil Green, is a recovering architect, who has been thinking about complex systems for 25 years. Of course, he is also one of the 7 billion or so most complex systems you will ever encounter - a human being.

Volunteers to speak at future events also sought. Contact Graham Danby at  grahamedanby@gmail.com

Friends of West Norwood Station

Short item for the newsletter: I am looking to set up a ‘Friends of West Norwood station’ group. I know this is just outside the area, but many palace residents use this station. The plan is to clean the station up and plant a garden in the areas behind the platforms. There is already an apple tree there! The friends would then look after this garden area. Anybody interested please contact Tim Bellenger.
