Newsletter October 2017

Dear All,

I hope you enjoy reading about some of the fantastic fundraising activities that have already taken place this year and some of the much needed projects the funds have financed. Also, don't miss details of our upcoming events. As ever, the Angels team is hard at work organising these events, raising funds and awareness for the amazing children we support.

A huge thank you to those who have supported our events and made them so successful as well as those special Angels who give their time and dedication freely to our cause. We are always on the lookout for more Angels to join our behind the scenes team. If you are able to put aside half a day a week to join our meetings and assist with event organisation and office administration, please get in touch. We are particularly in need of additional PR and social media skills. The team you would be working with are some of the most kind-hearted and inspiring people whom I am fortunate enough to call my friends.

With love,

Helen xxx

Fundraising Events in 2017:
HKFC Netball Shootathon

After the enormously successful inaugural Shootathon last year, the junior netball teams of the Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) pulled out all the stops to support their two chosen charities - one of which was, once again, Angels for Orphans.

Parents, grandparents, helpers, siblings and friends sponsored the netball players to score as many goals as possible in ten minutes.

Pockets were certainly feeling lighter after the sharp shooters surpassed last year’s goal numbers by a large margin. It was obvious some focused target practice had been undertaken in preparation.

Angels – Suzanne, Wendy, Nova and Emilie – were lucky enough to be there on the day the awards and prizes were presented to the winners. They were joined by two Po Leung Kuk students, who have been playing netball for the HKFC since last season.

Well done to all the netballers who took part in this fun challenge and many congratulations to the winners of each category:

Many thanks to all the friends and family who supported the girls on the day and sponsored the event which raised a total of just over HK$43,500.

Angels for Orphans would also like to thank the members of the HKFC Netball Committee and coaches, in particular Cheryl White, whose organization and time spent putting together the event is very much appreciated.

In addition, we would also like to thank the HKFC management and staff for their care and generosity in the use of the club’s facilities and donating a much-enjoyed cake to finish off the festivities.

We are already looking forward to next year’s event.

Angels for Orphans Live Lounge

On March 15th we held our fourth Angels for Orphans Live Lounge event which was held at a new venue, the opulent Dada Bar + Lounge in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Our talented musical ambassadors, Karen Linker and Katie Targett-Adams, were joined by Pete Kelly and Emmanuel Diaz teaming up to dazzle our audience of over 65 guests with their stunning vocals, heavenly strings of the harp and the jamming tunes of our Angel DJ.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors and donors: Luxe Manor, FINDS, Gosia Orlowska, Wine Brothers, Christine Zhou, Aston Martin (HK) and Smallprint.

Angels for Orphans raised over HK$26,000 – much needed funds to help support two important initiatives run by Po Leung Kuk in Hong Kong – the Children's All Rounded Development Program and the Joy to Learn Program.

A huge thank you to all who support Angels for Orphans and for making the Live Lounge event a success. Planning is already underway for the next Live Lounge which will take place on December 6th – watch this space.

Angels for Orphans Fitness Challenge

After the success of last year’s inaugural Angels Fitness Challenge, we were thrilled to welcome 50 participants in April to take part in the 2017 competition. Eight teams were formed ranging from the ‘Crew’ in Happy Valley to the ‘Warriors’ in Sai Kung. Special thanks to our wonderful trainers for volunteering their time, professional guidance and enthusiasm – Kin Ho, Dayle Haigh-Smith, Tim Stevens, Peter Soon, Cristina Morgan and Katherine Toong at JAB studio, Mariles de Guzman, and Tom Preston from Elite Personal Training.

Over the eight-week period, challengers also benefited from tips from Emilie Clairet, our Health and Nutrition Consultant, a 50% off consultation with a physio at The Round Clinic, a free Muay Thai session by POW Muay Thai and Fitness and a Zumba class hosted by the Angels Zumba team.

The hard work paid off with all teams doing an amazing job getting fitter, healthier and, importantly, raising more than HK$200,000 for the children we support at Bali Kids and Sunrise Cambodia.

Congratulations to Stephanie Marmagne who was our top individual fundraiser and to the ‘Happy Valley Crew’ (Louise Titterington, Chantal Cook, Melissa Walsh, Genevieve Neil Burke, Ruth Kelly and Zoe Conlin) who won top fundraising team.

In the fitness competition, the most improved team was the Sai Kung Warriors (Imelda Maria du Toit, Becky Lohan, Barbarah Nicole Dudman, Beverly Bollozos, Sharon Marjorie Knowler, Lee King, Carmel Therese Hutchinson, Carolyn Blacker and Rachel Nardone). And fitness prize for Top Individual was awarded to Carmel Hutchinson.

Special thanks also to our wonderful sponsors: H Kore, The Round Clinic, Jebsen Travel, Kerry HotelThe Patsy, Everything Organic, Nuzest, 2XU, Farmers Market and 208 Duecento Otto’s

Thanks also to Vinay and his team at Alto Bar & Grill for providing the perfect venue for the "Angels White Party" at the end of the challenge, to our resident DJ, Ying, for her happening vibes and to Matt from HQ Photo for taking our pics.

Finally, no Angel event would be such a success without the Angel Volunteers – thanks to you all for your amazing dedication and support.

We hope to see everyone back again next year!

Po Leung Kuk Fun Day

The Po Leung Kuk Fun Day is one of the most anticipated events on the Angels for Orphans calendar.  It is our chance to celebrate our partnership with Po Leung Kuk’s (PLK) Residential Care Centre in Causeway Bay and to share some great times with the children there.

The money we raise for PLK helps fund their Children’s All Rounded Development Program, which provides extra-curricular enrichment opportunities to residential children.

From our ‘Angel’s Zumbathon’ event in 2016 we were able to donate $270,000 to support this program and in doing so enabled 736 children to develop their talents (in areas such as sport, art, cooking and I.T) and benefit from academic tutorials.

The sixth annual Po Leung Kuk Fun Day was held on Saturday 10th June at which more than 100 children, aged from 3-17, joined us for an afternoon of exciting games, tasty treats and entertainment.

Our Angel’s PLK Fun Day would not be possible without the support of our generous sponsors who provide and run the activities with such skill and enthusiasm.

The children loved creating masks with Gail Deayton of Hong Kong Art Tutoring, playing robot football and learning to code with the staff from Creative Coding. The Hong Kong Dodgeball team got the kids running around and learning the basics of the game before the talented people of Face Slap! began transforming hands and faces into fabulous works of art. Marks & Spencer provided a table of tasty treats and ice cream was donated by the always popular, Wild Mylk.

The day ended with some great entertainment, starting with some of the talented children of PLK who show-cased the skills they have learnt through the enrichment program. We then had a DJ session with our very own Emmanuel Diaz, which got the kids grooving and trying their hands on the decks!

The day ended with a beautiful and heartfelt presentation to our fabulous Angel Nova Thomas (aka Super Nova) in which the staff and children of PLK said their goodbyes and thanks to Nova for her hard work and commitment to the Children’s All Rounded Development Program.

Nova has now left Hong Kong and will be greatly missed but the fundraising by Angels for Orphans will carry on so that PLK can continue to enrich the lives of the children in their care through this fantastic extra-curricular program.

Sunrise Cambodia
Early Learning Centre

Sunrise Early Learning Centre will cater for two classes of pre-school aged children of about 25 each. The program will be play based and focused on preparing the children for school, Grade 1.

The greatest benefit, apart from allowing these younger children access to a high quality education, is the opportunity for their older siblings to attend school rather than be forced to stay home to look after their younger brothers and sisters, and to allow parents to work without the worry of the safety of their children. In this way, incomes can be increased and lifestyles can be improved.

The research proves that the best start to life is a quality kindergarten and early learning program as children absorb substantial amounts of information early on in life as they begin developing language and social skills. They are primed and eager to learn between the ages of three and five.

In Cambodia there is a staggering lack of preschools, especially in rural areas, which means that most children are deprived of this critical education jump start. Only 13% of children between the ages of three to five have access to early childhood development opportunities and only 27% of five year olds are enrolled in pre-schools.

Poor children are rarely given the opportunity for early learning in Cambodia. Our aim is to improve the equity of opportunity in early learning. The poorest communities lack the infrastructure for early learning and do not have access to experienced providers. Early Learning programs give a child a much better chance of success in school, in completing Primary School and in continuing on to High School. Currently, the school drop out rate by Grade 6 is 45%.

Sunrise Cambodia seeks to help children realize their right to quality early learning education through developing an Early Learning facility and program at all five Sunrise sites across the country.

Bali Kids
A new 4WD!

The Medical and Dental team at Bali Kids services over 10,000 under-privileged children annually. Services are provided in-house at the Bali Kids centre or via their Mobile Clinic, which operates five or six days every week.

In addition to visiting orphanages all over Bali, their Mobile Clinic team travels to many remote mountain areas such as Singaraja, Karang Asem and Negara. Many of the mountain roads are extremely treacherous with steep inclines, particularly in the rainy season.

It is therefore critical that the team has suitable vehicles to safely transport staff and medical supplies to these remote locations. With funds raised at our previous Live Lounge and Fitness Challenge events we were thrilled to be able to buy the team a new Nissan Navara four-wheel drive.

The Nissan dealer hands over the keys to Komang Kusala from Bali Kids.
