PAC Meeting: Understanding Your Child's Academic Progress

Do you want to find out about the progress your child is making in reading, mathematics, and science and how you are able to support him/her to continue to grow? All Peterson parents and family members are welcome at the upcoming PAC meeting this Thursday, October 5th at 8:45 a.m.  If you would like to receive a copy of your child’s most recent standardized test scores at the meeting, please RSVP here with your child(ren)'s name(s) by Tuesday, October 3rd.  At the meeting, learn what the NWEA MAP scores mean and learn about the Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Systems (BAS) test.

In addition, find out how to make the most of your conversations with teachers at the upcoming Report Card Pick-Up.  We will also vote for officers for the Bilingual Advisory Council (BAC) - a great way to get involved to support the needs of English learners at Peterson!

A free breakfast will be served, and younger siblings are welcome to attend as well!

Community Happenings

In 2010 and 2011, the North Park Art Walk brought hundreds of art lovers to streets and shops on Bryn Mawr and Kedzie avenues.  A group of neighbors is reinstating the Art Walk this year, October 7th and 8th from 12 to 6 p.m. More than 30 Chicagoland-based artists will be exhibiting and selling their work. They will transform Bryn Mawr and Kedzie Avenues into “pop-up” art galleries welcoming neighbors and visitors to our community. The event starts at Koh-Varilla Studio, 5518 N Kedzie Ave.  Kids’ activities are planned, so bring them along!

The North Park Community Market started in August to bring "local farms, artisans, and fun to the Hollywood - North Park neighborhood."  A number of Peterson parents help to organize this monthly market, which is held in the Peterson school parking lot.  The next market - the last of the season - will be on Sunday, October 29th from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  Come out to enjoy the delicious food, support our community, and have some free fun for the kids too!
High School Fair

Do you have a seventh or eighth grader?  Please plan to attend the annual high school fair this Wednesday, October 4th, to learn about high school options from more than 15 different high school representatives. Seventh grade students and their parents will participate from 2:00-3:00 p.m. and eighth grade students and their parents will participate from 3:00-4:00 p.m. Parents should sign in at the Main Office and then proceed to the Cafeteria.  Please contact Mr. Coleman or Ms. Berebitsky with questions.

Math Night

Would you like to learn about the math curriculum at Peterson?  Do you want to know how to help your children with their math homework?  Come to an interactive and informative training sponsored by the Peterson PAC to learn from Peterson teachers about these issues!

The fifth annual Math Night is coming up on Thursday, October 19th from 5:30-7:00 p.m.  A free dinner will be served beginning at 5:30, followed by interactive teacher-facilitated sessions divided by grade level.

Door prizes will be raffled off, and limited free childcare will be available for children 5 and under.  Please
RSVP to the Peterson PAC if you would like to reserve a childcare spot.

If you are willing to volunteer at the event, please
contact the PAC.  Please enter through the Cafeteria that evening.

The PAC was created to help support the role of parents and the school as equal partners in children’s education. The primary purpose of the PAC is to empower parents to inspire and assist their children in achieving their educational goals.

Do you know of families who might be interested in attending Peterson next school year?  For those who live outside of the neighborhood boundaries, they must apply through the new GoCPS System; the application period will begin October 10th and runs through December 22nd.

Parent information sessions will be held on Monday, October 30th at 9:30 a.m. and November 2nd at 6 p.m.

Please let any friends or relatives, both within our neighborhood boundaries and outside of it, about these opportunities to learn more and possibly join our wonderful school community!
