PROBLEM WASTE - NAPPIES

Every day, thousands of nappies arrive at the recycling facilities around Perth after being placed into the incorrect kerbside bin.

Soiled nappies and incontinence products should NEVER be placed in the recycling bin as they end up contaminating the recycling process. Nappies should always be placed into either your dark-green topped bin on a two-bin system, or your red-topped bin on a three-bin system.

Alongside the incorrect disposal of nappies, one child will use 4,000-6,000 disposable nappies, costing up to $3,000. Each nappy takes up to 500 years to break down in landfill, where it generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas.

Modern cloth nappies are a great alternative – they have a lesser impact on the environment and will save you thousands of dollars over the time your baby is in nappies.

To find out how easy it is to use Real Nappies, visit m.recycleright.wa.gov.au/real-nappies.html or download the Recycle Right app from the iTunes or Google Play stores.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM

Over the past two months, the Recycle Right team has expanded with Isabelle and Conor joining the team, so we thought we’d ask them both to tell us a little about themselves.

‘If you want grown-ups to recycle, just tell their kids the importance of recycling and they’ll be all over it’ – Bill Nye

My great passion is sharing knowledge and educating others about recycling and waste. As the new Waste Education Officer at the Regional Resource Recovery Centre (RRRC) I get to share this knowledge with grown-ups and children alike, every day of the week. I love this quote, children have a wonderful level of enthusiasm about what they see and learn at the RRRC and are a great vehicle for the message.

I have been working in education for over a decade and am thrilled to be a part of the RRRC team, there is a lot of crossover between my work life and personal life in the way that minimising my impact is a part of my everyday life. Composting, worm farming and most recently gardening, are activities I am involved in weekly. It’s in doing these things, that I connect with nature, the food I eat and the waste I am creating.

Conor
Sustainability and conservation of our natural environment have been life-long passions of mine, and I am excited to be sharing these with the community as a new Waste Education and Project Officer with SMRC.

I have worked on sustainability education projects in regional WA for more than eight years and enjoy working with a wide range of people to help make a difference in their community.

NATIONAL RECYCLING WEEK

Founded in 1996, National Recycling Week aims to bring a national focus to the environmental benefits of recycling. Now in its 22nd year, this established and highly regarded annual campaign continues to educate and stimulate behaviour change, by:

  • Promoting kerbside, industrial and community recycling initiatives;
  • Giving people the tools to minimise waste and manage material resources responsibly at home, work and school.

National Recycling Week runs from Monday 13 to Sunday 19 November. You can get involved at school, at home or at work. For more information including events and campaigns you can get involved in, visit recyclingweek.planetark.org/

Buy nothing is a new social movement spreading across the country, enabling people and communities to commit episodic acts of daily good together. The movement uses social media to bring to the fore myriad random acts of kindness for neighbours to partake in day-in and day-out.

Buy nothing is a great way to pass on goods and items that you no longer need, but could be useful for someone else to provide it with a new lease on life.

To find out more about this great movement, visit buynothingproject.org or search for your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook.
