Dear students,

As we approach the middle of the semester our already busy lives will take a turn for busier :) During times like these-when I am feeling under the weather and so ready for a vacation-I am reminded of a presentation I heard at the beginning of the semester. The presentation by Dr. Roger Jansen (Chief Strategy Officer for Spectrum Health System) was entitled, “Two Standard Deviations Above the Mean.” Throughout the talk attendees were encouraged to outwork their competition, work harder than the average person, and stay ahead of the curve. So instead of falling into the mid-semester doldrums, I am encouraging you (and myself) to keep going, demonstrate discipline, and work hard!

To this end, I want to encourage you to read the content in our newsletters (this edition and others to come), click on something new and hopefully you will learn something, be inspired, and/or be pointed to a helpful resource. One of Dr. Jansen’s top ten ways to stay ahead of the curve was “Explore the resources and opportunities at MSU, leave without saying, ‘I wish I had.’” Here is your opportunity…In this edition of Undergraduate YOU there is information on opportunities for student leadership around campus sexual violence and misconduct, an opportunity to start planning and preparing for graduate school through the Graduate School Presentation Day, and our alumni spotlight, Nicole Plank, a student who far exceeded the mean!

Good luck in the second half of the semester and GO GREEN!

Amanda Guinot Talbot, PhD
Undergraduate Director
