REMINDERS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Volunteering - Thank you to the parents who have stepped forward to take on projects, pull weeds, beautify our play areas, sit on committees, sweep paths, help with baking and food prep, coordinate fundraising projects, assist on field trips, and so much more! Your service is deeply appreciated.

Red Door Store - The Red Door Store would like to offer you a 20% discount on all books pre-ordered by Wednesday October 25th. Please contact Ella at reddoor@vws.ca for details or come by the store to view a catalogue and pick up an order form.

Fund Development Committee - Mary Henley is forming a Fund Development Committee that will be a space for creativity, ideas sharing and planning big things. Please be in touch if you're interested in learning more. If you'd like to get involved and have fundraising experience but no time for a committee, she'd love to talk with you about considering a low-commitment advisory role instead. mhenley@vws.ca

Grocery Cards - Congratulations to Elva Liu, October’s winner of a free $50 gift card! Thanks to all 39 people who have placed orders so far. If you’d like your chance for free groceries in November whilst raising funds for initiatives for the students, download an order form here and get your orders in by Oct 18.

Lost and Found - Our Lost & Found fills up quickly, especially when the days start cool but, finish up warm. If you are missing any items please check in the bin outside the Woodworking Shop at the Grade School.

Become a Homestay Host - Are you interested in becoming a homestay host? We have an international student arriving in January for 3 months who is looking for a warm and caring, pet-free family to take them in. Please contact Karen at admissions@vws.ca if you would like to learn more.

PARENT EDUCATION

Building Social Health in a Digital Age - On October 18, the Vancouver Waldorf School welcomes Christof Wiechert to speak to parents, teachers and caregivers about how children adapt, step by step, to sense-perceptional sensations. Children need the time to adapt; the brain needs time to adapt. If sensory overkill happens, the brain cannot 'digest' the information. This causes damage to the whole system of nerve-sense-brain relations. These facts are well known in the scientific community, but are not made public frequently enough. Register here.
The Inner Life of Bees Study Group - Join us for an in depth exploration of the Meaning of Bees. We will begin by screening The Queen of the Sun at 7:00 pm on Monday October 23, then continue with discussion for an additional 4 Mondays (breaking on November 6). We will meet again in the spring for an additional 5 weeks for a practical hands-on experience learning about beekeeping, as we install a hive and introduce honey bees to our Grade School campus.

COMMUNITY & RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

26 new families have joined our community this school year and Development would like to pair each new family with a family from another grade. The idea behind this informal relationship is that the newest members of our community get to meet and connect with more families than those with whom they share a class teacher. The idea is that this will be low-commitment and as simple as sending an email, meeting at a Community Coffee morning, or exchanging a phone call to check in. Let's work together to weave a cozy and comforting web of welcome around our new families as we head into the colder and darker months. You never know, you or your children might make a friend for life. To learn more, please email Mary Henley at mhenley@vws.ca or drop in to the Development Office to chat about next steps.

GR 12 FUNDRAISING

The Grade 10 warmly invites you to their upcoming Community Coffee House fundraiser on Friday, October 27 from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Grade School Hall. Entrance is by donation (suggested $10 per person or $20 per family) which includes a complimentary tea/coffee or juice. All proceeds go toward this year's Grade 12 class for their year-end community service trip.

The evening promises to be fun for the whole family with dinner and goodies (for sale), games, prizes and later in the night a classic rock band, Five Star Motel, to dance the night away!

The Coffee House is open to ages 10+ (with adult supervision please).

If you have any questions, please contact the High School office at (604) 986-2922 or highschool@vws.ca

Leonard Cohen Lounge & Film Festival
November 3 and 4 at the High School.
Doors open at 6:30, 1st film at 7:00, 2nd film at approximately 8:30

Refreshments | Live Music | Door prizes

Celebrating the life and achievements of Leonard Cohen, this film festival is open to students grades 8 and over, and to all community members. Each night we will present a double feature - the first (shorter) film about Leonard Cohen as a poet and musician, and the second film focusing on live performances and his music. The whole evening will probably be a good 3 hours with refreshments available before the first and second films. Late comers are welcome to enter quietly at any time.

Donations will be gratefully accepted and refreshments will be provided by the students in Grade 11. All proceeds from donations and refreshments will go to the Class of 2018 Year End Trip fund.
