Team Spotlight: NCA Hawks Basketball

NCA Hawks picked up enough trash to fill the ENTIRE bed of a pickup truck
"Part of our objective as an organization is to be mindful of community service.  We feel we have a great group of boys and want to challenge them to do what they can off the basketball court to become better citizens of their communities.
We had a successful first event! We even had a city employee stop his truck as he was driving by and comment on how clean the street looked."

-Tony Kim, coach

Thank you for your third quarter cleanups, 790 hours of litter cleanup: a 122% increase from the second quarter! This quarter had the second highest participation in Adopt-A-Street history (835 was the record). Your litter abatement efforts help protect wildlife, improve water quality, and build community pride.
"Removing solid waste like litter from waterways reduces bacterial contamination, flooding risks, negative impacts to wildlife and serves to beautify and maintain riparian areas in their natural state, making them attractive for recreation and enjoyment."

Randy Cochran, Hydrologist, Stormwater Division, City of Frisco Public Works

A Fowl Solution to Litter

The single most littered item - cigarettes. In the U.S. alone, approximately 1.7 billion cigarettes were discarded irresponsibly causing toxic waste to infiltrate our public spaces. Amsterdam innovators are working on a technology to train crows to collect and properly dispose of cigarette butts. Crows are incredibly intelligent creatures: crows drop butts into the collector, a sensor detects it's a cigarette and in exchange the crow receives a peanut.  Positive reinforcement gives the crows incentives to come back and tell their crow friends about it too. While on YouTube, check out videos of crows completing puzzles!

While I'm sure all of us would love to see less litter, are we willing to redistribute the burdens of smoking from the manufactures and consumers onto wildlife?
