The month it's all about awards for modal shift! An award for encouraging more than 15,000 Italians to change the way they travel, an award for getting people in Reading out of cars and on to bicycles, and nearly - but not quite - a Barclays Award for entrepreneurship. Well, we can't win them all!

How Bologna encouraged more than 15,000 Italians
to ditch their cars

The Italian city of Bologna had tried to reduce CO2 emissions before by banning the use of polluting vehicles during the day. This didn't go down too well. So, SRM, the local public transport authority, decided to try positive incentives to encourage citizens to switch to more sustainable modes of transport. The result was impressive.

Bella Mossa programme wins CIVITAS Bold Measure Award

Bella Mossa, Bologna's BetterPoints-powered programme to encourage sustainable transport, 'has been one of the most effective tools to promote sustainable mobility in our city,' said Bologna’s Deputy Mayor.

BikeSmart Reading wins Healthy Streets Award for modal shift

BikeSmart, run by Reading Borough Council and powered by BetterPoints, encouraged local people to cycle more. Together, they cycled the equivalent of 13 times round the planet.
