D1.jobs
: The big chair at UTEP, along with a senior leadership opportunity at Holy Cross are new below. Post your team opportunities where thousands of administrators start their mornings. Upload a job here.
From The Chair Hosted By Mike Hamilton: Kentucky's Mitch Barnhart
Iowa AD Barta receives an outpouring of support from his Big Ten brethren & others on news he'll take an indefinite leave of absence to fight prostate cancer. The Hawkeyes will be led in the interim by Deputy AD Burke. Former Hawks senior leader & current Kansas State AD Taylor: "He knows it’s going to be a challenge and I think that’s why he kind of waited for this time to be right. With the off week, I think that’s kind of why he timed it (this way) and the doctors obviously felt OK letting him choose the date. He’s got a great staff there. Barbara’s going to do a great job in the interim and there’s a lot of other senior administrators and staff that like Gary so much, they’re going to step up and nothing will slow down. When he gets back, everything will be fine." Purdue boss Bobinksi calls Barta "one of the true gentlemen and professionals in our entire business," encourages men around the industry to get checked out. (link)
Old Dominion AD Selig indicates he met with Korn Ferry executives to discuss the opening at Virginia, where he previously spent 11 years on staff, but soon afterwards removed his name from consideration with the Cavs. "While I absolutely love and respect Charlottesville and U.Va. and everybody there, it just wasn’t right for me. I think that’s really more of a reflection of what’s going on here with our athletic program, how happy my family and I are here, how close we are to family and friends, than anything to do with U.Va." Selig further notes that Norfolk is his home, how his family has a tendency to stay put & "how many times in a lifetime does an athletic director get to be part of group building a football stadium?" (link)
More MBB Saga: ACs Richardson (Arizona), Bland (USC) & Person (Auburn) were in a Manhattan courtroom yesterday. Richardson's attorney maintains his client's innocence, "Criminal trials are not about press conferences or allegations made in sworn complaints. They are about evidence. Book Richardson is not guilty and will remain not guilty." Travel restrictions, passport forfeiture & a return to court on November 9th were handed down to all three. Yahoo's Wetzel provides more commentary. (link); Yahoo's Eisenberg adds to the narrative as Colorado HC Boyle says each of his seven years in Boulder he's had to ascertain which prospective student-athletes want more than a full ride. Another 'Power 5' HC: "It’s lawless. The parents view it as, 'Time to get mine.'" Boyle believes one key solution is ADs not rehiring those who get in trouble, does not expect a major overhaul of the system. (link); Texas A&M HC Kennedy: "There's a lot of slime in our game. […] I don't have all the answers obviously, but some things need to change. Coach K from Duke made some great comments about [how] basketball has changed in the seventh, eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The NCAA hasn't changed and adapted to some of those changes." (link)
Louisville: The attorney for on-leave MBB HC Pitino indicates the former Cards boss has already been questioned by the FBI & fully cooperated. Also, "'Coach 2' had conversations with a guy from Adidas. That's it. And he had conversations with somebody from Adidas before Bowen signs with the university. OK, so what's wrong with that? They don't even allege there was anything improper in the conversations." (link); Kentucky Governor Bevin comments on AD Jurich, "...he has done an extraordinary job. ... I'm not convinced (his career at U of L) is done. I think there are many, many people in this community who recognize the value of what he has done. And I'm confident this board will consider all that as part of their decision making process. What they do, I'll defer to them." (link); Prez Postel has received added security oversight after hostile phone calls were made to his home & office in connection to decisions on Pitino & Jurich. (link)
The Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner wonders how the Pac-12 Networks will handle this Thursday's Pac-12 MBB media day with Arizona & USC in the spotlight for alleged involvement by program ACs in the latest negative developments. Points to the lack of coverage of the Penn State saga by the Big Ten Network as an example. However, the Networks provided a statement, "With respect to our Pac-12 Networks ‘voice’ philosophy, it is to always tell the truth and to always express the passion and exuberance for Pac-12 athletics and student-athletes shared by our fans." Overall, Wilner expects the issues to be discussed, but not dissected in detail, gets additional thoughts from leading media minds. (link)
OregonLive.com's Canzano publishes text messages sent to him by former Oregon State FB HC Andersen that provide a window into how the Beavers' boss felt about his program as the season progressed. Pretty eye-opening read as Andersen expected to make a bowl game, continually noting the pressure he was placing on his staff given on-field performance, his willingness to "grind" & build a winner the fans deserved. In one text, Andersen specifically pointed to his buyout parameters, "I have them by the (expletive) for every penny, no buyout for the next four not counting this year... but that's not my style!! If it does not improve I will do some crazy (expletive) with my salary so I can pay the right coaches the right money!!" An OSU staffer to Canzano: "Most unique man in college football." More. (link)
In a mini-documentary released by UNINTERRUPTED, former Baylor FB student-athlete Gordon discussed about how a member of the Bears coaching staff helped him pass drug tests. Gordon: "I've been enabled by coaches, teachers, professors, everybody pretty much gave me a second chance just because of my ability. Not too long after I got arrested for possession of marijuana at Baylor, one of my coaches came by saying 'you are going to get drug tested by the compliance office. This is how it's going to work, this is what they are going to do. If they do call you in, here goes these bottles of detox.'" When asked about Gordon's claims during his press conference this week, Baylor FB HC Rhule said the school's current drug testing system doesn't allow him to interfere with the process: "We look at ourselves as we're supposed to help these kids make sure that they have the most successful life they can, so we believe in accountability, and I believe in consequences. I believe in tough conversations. I believe in second chances. I believe in grace, but I also believe in justice. We're trying to do that, but I think that they've done a really nice job here of making sure that there's protocol, so that I can't circumvent anything, which I wouldn't do anyways." (link)
Cash Considerations: Alabama's Crimson Tide Foundation receives a $2M commitment from international businessman & long-time supporter Rafiee. Bama AD Byrne points generally to facility upgrades. (link); Dartmouth has generated $27.5M in endowed funds over the last three years as AD Sheehy notes, "We have a budget that includes college subvention money, annual giving and endowment funds that cover our budget in general, and these funds free up the budget money that then can be used for something else." (link); Abilene Christian announces a new push for FB, launches with a $100K matching gift commitment for each of the next three years. (link)
Harris Consulting Group namesake for the Harvard Business Review: "My Competitiveness Was Hurting My Sales Team. Here's How I Realized It." Suggests some fixes: 1. Do a 360 - focus on the only thing you can control: you; 2. Seek three outcomes - "what I want, what the other person wants, and ways to achieve both for the betterment of the company;" 3. Address conflicts directly but tactfully - ask a colleague "what can I do better?;" 4. Make them (feel like) your mentors - turn to them for counsel; 5. Learn from your private life - from the kid at recess who couldn't handle losing, to the high school reunion classmate who has to have the most successful life, accept that they are secretly insecure and don't let it bother you. Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
As you may know by now, the U.S. Men's Soccer National Team will miss the World Cup next year in Russia as it lost 2-1 at Trinidad & Tobago while Panama & Honduras rallied to win from halftime deficits. Only one in twenty-seven outcome scenarios last night would have left the U.S. on the outside looking in & it's the exact scenario that played out. Yahoo's Wetzel calls youth soccer in our country a "disorganized mess," points to travel clubs at the youth level as boxing out some kids & decries consistency in coaching. (link); Another sports documentary deal for Netflix, this time it's Serie A power Juventus. (link)

Saint Louis has launched a Title IX investigation following four MBB student-athletes being accused of sexual assaulting three women last month. Lawyers representing the student-athletes reportedly don't expect criminal charges to be filed, as one attorney described the ongoing investigation as "noncriminal" in nature. Prez Pestello: "First, I want to say how deeply troubled I am by these allegations, which involve behavior that runs counter to our mission and values. SLU seeks to foster a safe and supportive atmosphere where students, faculty, clinicians, and staff can flourish in an inclusive environment that is free from harassment and harm." (link)
Van Wagner adds to its portfolio in a deal with the Big South. VWSE also has league pacts with the West Coast, WAC, CAA, America East & CIAA (DII). Big South Commish Kallander says his internal team has had "great success," but, "Van Wagner is the right partner at the right time for the Big South [...] the more we considered working with Van Wagner, the more we realized that their resources, support, expertise, and most importantly their people, would elevate our corporate partner program to greater heights." (link)
Hofstra AD Hathaway makes some moves on his senior staff. Former Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities Artinian up to Deputy AD, longtime department leader Lewis promoted to Senior Assoc. AD/SWA, Asst. AD for Administration August gets the bump to Assoc. AD for Finance & Administration & Asst. AD for Marketing & Promotions Arnone is now Assoc. AD for Fan Engagement. Hathaway: "Quality people are the most important asset of any organization. That's why I'm very excited to announce new positions and responsibilities for this group of outstanding leaders in the athletic department." (link)
Facilities: Revenues up & expenses down is a solid combination for Nebraska Omaha overall & especially for the financial state of Baxter Arena. Mavs AD Alberts also nods to the upcoming deal with Adidas that will cover more apparel & gear costs. Debt for Baxter down from $3.36M to $2.79M. (link); Siena has quietly added a new practice hoops facility, a new weight room for all student-athletes, plus a new sports medicine space. Part of $13.5M in overall enhancements. AD D'Argenio points to the importance of top-flight facilities to attract the best possible student-athletes. (link); Temple's proposed on-campus FB stadium gets some push back from students & area residents as the university continues to discuss the possible venue. (link); Check out Virginia Tech's new chair back seats in the $1M makeover of Cassell Coliseum, as well as a new hoops floor design featuring iconic buildings on the Blacksburg campus. (link)
Penn inks with Sparta Science to more closely monitor student-athlete health & wellness with an added incentive of improving performance. Quakers Chief of Sports Medicine & Head Team Physician Sennett: "Sparta allows us to quantify athletic parameters in a reliable and reproducible way, giving us data points to follow student-athletes’ performance in a way that’s not previously been possible. It’s one of the cornerstones of our sports performance program, allowing us to tailor training to a specific sport and athlete and also identify injury potential parameters, monitor lifestyle elements and train to mitigate any risks." (link)
ESPN Particulars: Lee Fitting gets a promotion up to VP/College Sports, will report up to VP/Event & Studio Production Druley. Fitting will have production oversight of college networks (SEC, Longhorn & ACC), as well as ESPNU. Per SBJ's Ourand, Fitting's move does not impact VP/College Networks Programming Durant who still has the reigns on programming & business operations of the portfolio. (link); The Worldwide Leader will build out a studio at Pier 17 in Lower Manhattan to be ready by next Spring. (link); You may not have noticed, but former SportsCenter anchor Czarniak exited Bristol back in August as her deal expired. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Former Nebraska AD & FB HC Osborne voices his view on the current state of affairs in Lincoln, "I can understand where there’s some concern out there. The problem is we had 42, 43 years where we never had a losing season. […] It probably isn’t always going to be that smooth. I just hope that they’ll hang in there and see it through. I think the sellout streak is still really important in recruiting. We hope the fans remain faithful and don’t bail out. We will have to see what happens. [...] The last five years we went 60-3. That’s probably not going to happen again very often. It can’t happen, even if you’re at Alabama and Clemson. You’re not likely going to go 60-3. Sometimes expectations can get unrealistic." (link)
ESPN's Dinich & Starrett study the 12 FB programs to make the College FB Playoff thus far in its lifespan, come away with eight common themes: 1) All 12 CFP semifinalists played a regular-season schedule ranked among the top 55 in the FBS (average 27th); 2) Eleven of the 12 participants played a regular-season nonconference game against a Power 5 opponent and won; 3) All 12 participants entered bowl season with at least two wins over AP-ranked opponents; 4) Nine of the past 12 semifinalists returned their primary starting quarterback from the previous season; 5) Eleven of 12 participants had a head coach who had previously won a conference title; 6) Eleven of 12 participants were ranked in the top four of ESPN's Strength of Record metric entering bowl season, including all eight teams over the past two years; 7) Ten of the 12 semifinalists entered bowl season ranked among the top 10 nationally in average scoring margin; and, 8) Eleven of 12 participants had a player finish in the top 10 of the Heisman Trophy voting, including two teams with winners. (link)
James Madison AD Bourne says he was surprised ESPN wanted to bring College GameDay back to Harrisonburg for the second time since 2015. However, it doesn't hurt that newly promoted VP/College Sports Fitting is a Dukes alum. FB HC Houston: "Having ‘College GameDay’ here on our campus is just a special event for our institution. It’s going to bring some national recognition for the school." Houston also notes the key of minimizing distractions for his squad this week. (link)
HC Notes: NC State AD Yow and FB HC Doeren are working on a contract extension as the Wolfpack are off to its best start in 15 years. Doeren's current deal has two years remaining at $2.2M per. Yow: "We want Dave here a long time and appreciate the progress that has been made." (link); Sports Illustrated's Staples plays the hypothetical game for Texas A&M FB HC Sumlin: "If the Aggies perform at the level they reached Saturday night [against Alabama], they can beat every opponent left on the schedule except possibly Auburn [would finish 9-3 or 10-2]. If that plays out, it puts Texas A&M in a strange situation. Instead of hiring a new coach, the Aggies will have to decide whether they want to extend the guy they were ready to run out of town." (link); Wright State AD Grant hires Wittenberg (DIII) Softball HC Matthews to the same position. (link)
Alongside the new Endeavor (formerly WME | IMG), agency brass also announce the launch of Endeavor Global Marketing, a "cultural marketing division" that will work with the likes of AB InBev, GE, Microsoft, Visa, Marriott & others. Division EVP Horne: "We’re advancing our work across brand strategy, experiential marketing, public relations, sponsorship, and original content to help brands access culture in meaningful ways that drive business." (link)
Also Noticed: Our thoughts are with the Colorado State team as the daughter of Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities & Event Management Max tragically passed away in a house fire at her parents house in Fort Collins over the weekend. The athletic department has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help with associated costs. (link); The third finalist for the Iowa State prez job is UCF Provost/EVP Whittaker, who will be on campus today. (link); Learfield Licensing Partners and New Era launch the Hispanic Heritage Collection with partner schools Cal, New Mexico, Houston, UTEP, UTSA and Cal State Long Beach. "The line, with contributions by noted Hispanic artists and embroidered with each artists identity, celebrates the deep artistic traditions of Hispanic culture and the diverse student bodies of its partner schools."
