Dear Friends,
 
October 11—today—is the first deadline to be met for foreign higher education institutions wishing to continue their operations in Hungary under the new Hungarian higher education law—‘lex CEU’. CEU continues its operations uninterrupted. Indeed the re-accreditation of the University by Hungarian higher education authorities is proceeding as normal. As always, CEU will comply with all Hungarian regulatory processes and requirements.
 
The next deadline is January 1, 2018, which requires that an agreement between Hungary and New York State be in place.
 
In anticipation of the January 1 deadline, talks between New York State and the Hungarian government have resulted in a framework agreement that would allow CEU to remain in Budapest, continuing to issue its American and Hungarian accredited degrees. Pursuant to the New York-Hungary draft agreement, CEU and Bard College have concluded a memorandum of understanding, committing CEU to develop educational activities in the State of New York. 
 
What remains to be done is for the Hungarian government to sign the draft agreement with New York and send it to the Hungarian Parliament for ratification so that it can acquire the force of law.  We urge the Hungarian government to do so without further delay.
 
As Rector and President, I would like to thank everyone in the community—staff, faculty, students, alumni, trustees and supporters—for continuing your work and your support with such resolve during this period. I want to assure all of you that – as I have said repeatedly – CEU will continue uninterrupted operation of all degree and non-degree programs and we hope to continue to flourish in Budapest as a world-class graduate university with a dual Hungarian and American identity.

Ma, október 11-én van az első határidő, amit a nemzeti felsőoktatásról szóló törvény módosítása, a “lex CEU” szabott a Magyarországon működő külföldi felsőoktatási intézmények számára. A CEU megszakítás nélkül folytatja tevékenységét. Az egyetem rendes újraakkreditációs folyamata is a megszokott módon halad a magyar felsőoktatási hatóságoknál. Ahogy eddig is, a CEU betartja az összes magyar szabályozást és előírást.
 
A következő határidő 2018. január 1-jén jár le, és ez megköveteli, hogy Magyarország és New York állam között nemzetközi megállapodás legyen érvényben.
 
A január elsejei határidőt érintő tárgyalások New York állam és a magyar kormány között egy olyan keretmegállapodást eredményeztek, amely lehetővé teszi, hogy a CEU Budapesten maradhasson, és továbbra is amerikai és magyar akkreditációjú diplomákat adhasson ki. A New York állam és a magyar kormány közötti megállapodás-tervezet létrejöttét követően a CEU és a Bard College egyetértési megállapodást írt alá, amelyben a CEU elkötelezte magát a New York államban folytatandó oktatási tevékenységek kidolgozására.
 
Jelenleg arra várunk, hogy a magyar kormány aláírja a megállapodás-tervezetet New York állammal, és elküldje azt az Országgyűlésnek ratifikálásra, amellyel az törvényerőre emelkedhet. Szorgalmazzuk, hogy a magyar kormány ezt haladéktalanul tegye meg.
 
Mint a CEU elnök-rektora, szeretnék közösségünk minden tagjának - dolgozóinknak, oktatóinknak, diákjainknak, öregdiákjainknak, a kuratórium tagjainak és támogatóinknak – köszönetet mondani azért, hogy ilyen eltökéltséggel folytatják munkájukat és támogatnak minket ezek között a példátlanul bizonytalan körülmények között is. Szeretnék mindenkit biztosítani még egyszer arról, hogy - ahogy többször is elmondtam - a CEU megszakítás nélkül folytatja minden képzését, és a célunk változatlanul az, hogy Budapesten maradjunk, és továbbra is itt működhessünk sikeresen, világszínvonalú magyar-amerikai posztgraduális egyetemként.
