Gift Boxes with a Theme

Let us put together a one-of-a-kind gift for you. You choose a theme and a value level ($75 minimum), and we will put together a small box of books for your recipient. We will package and ship it for you, so you can order from anywhere. Here's how it works: we will curate five or six books and show them to you by email; once you confirm your selections, we'll take it from there. While we will try to fill requests for specific titles, we are a used bookshop and will need to work with what's at hand. The surprising associations are where the magic happens! Boxes can include the following combinations:
  • Pulp Pal: a selection of vintage paperbacks
  • Mixed Messages: a selection of hardback and paperback books
  • Hard Choices: a selection of hardback books
  • Signed, Sealed, Delivered: a selection of signed books
Possible themes include:
  • Beloved vintage children’s books
  • History from a certain era or region
  • Cooking regional or ethnic cuisines
  • Gardening and nature
  • Hobbies like fly fishing, playing an instrument, or woodworking
  • Favorite authors or genres
  • Literary or artist bios or memoirs
  • Art or photography in a favorite style
  • Drama or poetry from a specific period
  • Music history, biography, or memoir
  • Travel writing focused on a time or place
  • Anything you can think of!

Top row, left to right

Erika Allbright keeps all calm and bright at our store by drawing order from chaos. A widely eclectic reader, this Austin native is often called upon to recommend ways to find Weird Austin beyond South Congress. Her motto is “Mama tried.”

Sheri Tornatore is the owner of the store and, like the “Big Eye” artwork on the side of our building, knows and sees all. Her background as a collage artist is evident in the artful displays of books and objects through the store. When she’s not convincing you to buy a book you never knew existed, she’s out scouting for unique offeringsher clever way of turning her favorite things into a successful business.

Brett Mourglia is an aspiring actor when he's not selling books. See him in productions around town before he breaks into the big time—or catch him acting extremely interested in your story about finding a copy of a signed book on display in our store at a garage sale in 1982.

Bottom row, left to right

John Barton, aka “Big Bad John,” became manager due to both his commanding knowledge of books and his ability to stare down unwanted buskers. His love of music, which you can see throughout the store, started with his first concert, the Beatles live at the Hollywood Bowl. Or it may have been Sonny and Cher.

Allison Faust holds up the admin end of things with multiple spreadsheets, but she only wants to talk about yoga because it's all yoga.

Kaila Wyllys rejects the moniker “social media guru,” but she gets the word (and pictures) about South Congress Books out to our friends and followers all over the world. While she maintains a high level of anonymity, she admits to being related to at least one other member of the team.
