Championing CHW Effectiveness in Arizona and Beyond

CHW Voluntary Certification Registry Legislation 

Continued efforts in state recognition of a voluntary certification process for CHWs have been taking place. In Arizona, before legislation supporting this process can be introduced, a sunrise application describing the process must be approved by the health Committee of Reference.  This past month AzCHOW resubmitted a sunrise application with a few changes. In 2015 a collaboration between the Arizona Prevention Research Center (AZPRC), Mariposa Community Health Center (MCHC), and the Rio Rico Medical and Fire District (RRFD), funded by ADHS 1305 program, resulted in the creation of a Coordinated Community Care Model (CCCM) and Implementation Plan. With goals of enhancing CHW programs, reducing the number of inappropriate 911 calls, as well as improved access to populations in need of services. Read more about it here!
Community Health Representative Summit III

On Wednesday August 23 and Thursday August 24th of 2017 the Yavapai Nation CHR program hosted the third annual Community Health Representative Summit (CHR). The two-day program of presentations, panel discussions and interactive dialogue centered around the topic of community health workers. To read a summary of the summit events click here!

 
Mariposa To Recieve Major Funding
 
As part of the Administration’s efforts to address the opioid epidemic, childhood obesity and serious mental illness in communities throughout the country, the Office of Minority Health (OMH) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced just over $5 million in new cooperative agreement awards to 15 organizations. Mariposa Community Health Center is one of them! Read about the AzPRC involvement and more about this initiative here!
Oyendo Bien In The News

Oyendo Bien is a collaborative effort between, UA's Speech Language and Hearing Science, the Arizona Prevention Research Center and Mariposa Community Health Center. This 5 year research project focuses on the development of an innovative community health worker model for eliminating the health disparities of people with hearing loss in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Recently the Nogales international gave us an in-depth look at what their classes look like. Read more about it here!
AzPRC Infographics Growing in Popularity

As a means of sharing best practices on how to integrate Community Health Workers (CHWs) into clinical practice. The AzPRC team in collaboration with the College of Public Health IT team, developed a series of infographics that have been featured in the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH).
