Serious Business: Four Principles in Building Trust

By Maksym Nefyodov, Deputy Minister for Economic Development and Trade, Ukraine

“Trust is a scarce jewel in the modern world.” Deputy Minister Nefyodov would know - the Revolution of Dignity took place in a country scarred by corruption, opacity, and aggression. But Ukraine’s reforms are rebuilding trust between citizens and governments - and are held up by four principles. Read more here.

Open Dialogue Can Resolve Value Conflicts

By Don Lenihan, Canada 2020

“People are left feeling disconnected from their governments and powerless to do anything about it. There is a sense that governments can no longer be trusted to do what is right.” But dialogue - particularly dialogue conducted in a contemporary, open way - can bridge that disconnect and restore faith in government. Political Upheaval and Trust-Building

By Kim Boo-Kyum, Minister of the Interior and Safety, South Korea

“When Zigong asked Confucius about the essence of government, the master replied: ‘Sufficient food, a strong army, and the trust of the people…. without the trust of the people, no government could survive.’” So begins Minister Kim’s essay, on how Korea is improving trust in a post-scandal environment. Drawing on ancient history as well as the recent past, he shows that trust can create “candlelight democracy.” Read the full essay here.

Quote of the Month

Frans Timmermans
First Vice President, European Commission

“We are no longer in a ’trust me’ society - we can no longer get a vote every four or five years and say to people ‘trust me, we’ll take care of it and at the end of the day you can judge us.'  We’re in a ‘show me’ society.   People want to see what we do on a daily basis, and if we don’t adapt our political systems to that, there will be a temptation to go for the alternative of pandering to lies and half truths as a means of gaining political control, as is happening too often in societies today.” (Photo: Kal Dolgin, Eyesounds Photography)

Faces of Open Government
Dr. Dhananjayan "Danny" Sriskandarajah
Secretary General and CEO, CIVICUS

In your essay, you write that organizations like OGP and CIVICUS have been at the forefront of the “openness revolution.” Who needs to join this revolution to make it truly transformational?

Everyone! In recent months there’s been increased focus on the role that tech giants like Google and Facebook are playing in our democracies. The reality is, that the relationship between people and their governments is changing, and often this is not for the better. We need the new powerful players in the corporate world, to also show a commitment to openness. Also, of course the openness revolution would not be possible without the media. We all need to think about how we can safeguard the media’s independence and diversity, so that it can continue to play its vital watchdog role. Finally, it’s important for the “openness revolution” to involve all of civil society, and that means looking beyond the usual well-resourced international NGOs in the Global North.
