Open Dialogue Can Resolve Value Conflicts

OGP Welcomes Canada as 2018-19 Government Lead Co-Chair!

The Government of Canada, represented by Treasury Board President Scott Brison, will be lead co-chair alongside Nathaniel Heller of Results for Development for the 2018-19 year.

Political Upheaval and Trust-Building

“When Zigong asked Confucius about the essence of government, the master replied: ‘Sufficient food, a strong army, and the trust of the people…. without the trust of the people, no government could survive.’” So begins Minister Kim’s essay, on how Korea is improving trust in a post-scandal environment. Drawing on ancient history as well as the recent past, he shows that trust can create “candlelight democracy.” Read the full essay here.

In your essay, you write that organizations like OGP and CIVICUS have been at the forefront of the “openness revolution.” Who needs to join this revolution to make it truly transformational?

Everyone! In recent months there’s been increased focus on the role that tech giants like Google and Facebook are playing in our democracies. The reality is, that the relationship between people and their governments is changing, and often this is not for the better. We need the new powerful players in the corporate world, to also show a commitment to openness. Also, of course the openness revolution would not be possible without the media. We all need to think about how we can safeguard the media’s independence and diversity, so that it can continue to play its vital watchdog role. Finally, it’s important for the “openness revolution” to involve all of civil society, and that means looking beyond the usual well-resourced international NGOs in the Global North.

Asia-Pacific Events Logistical Consultant
The OGP Support Unit is seeking a consultant preferably based in Jakarta (candidates from Singapore and Manila will also be considered) to assist the Support Unit in working with partners organizing regional events in 2017. This a temporary position for 3 months, with the possibility of extension.

Communications Officer
The Open Government Partnership (OGP)  is looking to add a creative, strategic communicator to its growing team.  The ideal candidate will be agile, flexible and able to clearly communicate the mission and impact of OGP across multiple tasks, including social media, press engagement and content creation (video, blogs, podcasts and other medium).

Call for Proposals: Assessing Featured OGP Commitments
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is inviting proposals to assess if and how OGP reforms have changed government policy, practice and services and made a tangible difference in peoples’ lives. A total of 5-7 grants of USD 5,000 each will be awarded competitively to journalists, researchers or organizations that meet the criteria for proposals.

The Independent Reporting Mechanism (IRM) of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) is seeking individuals to carry out research at the national level in a variety of countries to assess government progress on implementation of their OGP Action Plans.

Donor Scoping Consultant in Africa
OGP is looking for an individual to carry out donor mapping in OGP member countries in Africa. The overall objective of this assignment is to conduct a comprehensive donor scoping and intelligence of funding agencies in 15 African countries. The consultant will lead the donor mapping process with a view to actively seek partnerships with those donors whose priorities are in line with the Open Governance Partnership and Good Governance broadly.
