News of the day was Oregon State AD Barnes' mutual decision with FB HC Andersen to part ways. Andersen will apparently forgo all of his $12.7M contractual buyout. Andersen: "After many discussions with Scott, waiving my contract is the correct decision and enables the young men and the program to move forward and concentrate on the rest of this season. Coaching is not about the mighty dollar. It is about teaching and putting young men in a position to succeed on and off the field. Success comes when all parties involved are moving in the same direction." Barnes: "Coach Andersen's decision to waive his remaining compensation is unprecedented in major college athletics. His decision is made for the right reasons and values, and it speaks volumes about the kind of honorable person that Gary Andersen is." Link includes full presser video as Barnes also notes he'll use a search firm to aid the hiring process (Jeff Schemmel was alongside Prez Ray for the process that ended with Barnes). (link); OregonLive.com's Canzano tries to make sense of the outcome, confides that Andersen told him weeks ago he'd forgo the monies if he didn't feel like the Beavers could get over the hump. Concludes the situation has be taken at face value. (link)
No more WME | IMG, just 'Endeavor' now, the new holding company brand for the mega-entertainment firm. Ari Emanuel will serve as CEO with Patrick Whitesell as Executive Chairman. Emanuel: "WME | IMG represented a pivotal moment in our company’s history, but it does not accurately reflect the extent of our diversity or indicate where we’re headed. In creating Endeavor, we now have a holding company that represents the very definition of the word itself, constantly striving to push boundaries on behalf of our clients and owned properties." Whitesell: "Our business at its core remains rooted in access, service and creativity. The one substantial difference is that unlike 20 years ago, we’re now sitting at the center of an incredible global network. We have the relationships and the platforms to help our clients and partners extend their reach and bring their creative initiatives to life." (link)
Witt/Kieffer will lead the search to identify, vet & hire a new AD at Yale. The Bulldogs are looking for their first boss since 1994 when longtime AD Beckett took over in New Haven. Beckett is set to retire at the end of the 2017-18 academic year. (personal correspondence)
Gators: Florida AD Stricklin is pressing the gas. Instead of a renovation to Baseball's McKethan Stadium, a brand new facility is in the works to the tune of $45.9M. Timeline looks like an August of 2018 start, with completion by December of 2019. The footprint for the venue could include where a stand-alone FB building was thought to be going, so more news must be coming from Gainesville. (link); Here's a draft of the full Baseball Project facilities program submission. (link); The FB Gators are going with alternative "swamp green" unis for this weekend's matchup with Texas A&M. (link)
Cardinals: Leading local journalist Crawford goes deep with an excellent piece on how to balance the legacy of on-leave AD Jurich with the apt title of, "It's Complicated." Some key takeaways: "In brief, he has had more influence on the physical transformation of U of L’s Belknap Campus than any figure in the university’s modern history. Period. […] Nobody would be comparing U of L to the other Top 24 revenue programs in the nation had Jurich not gotten the department to that point, largely through suite revenue at the KFC Yum! Center and suite revenue from a new seating section at the football stadium. […] Yes, Jurich is the highest paid athletic director in the nation. He’s also the only one in the Top 25 revenue programs to take over a program that had a budget of less than $30 million, no major conference affiliation, basketball probation, a one-win football team, a Title IX problem waiting to happen, few adequate facilities and a basketball program on probation and facing major NCAA sanctions. […] In the end, scandal is a problem. [...] no one is indispensable." In conclusion, Crawford suggests both parties goes their separate ways in the most dignified way possible. (link); The Courier-Journal's Sullivan: "UofL donors need to see beyond Jurich" (link); A tentative settlement has been reached in the case of those mentioned in escort Powell's book against her & the book's publisher. (link)
MBB Saga: Yahoo's Thamel catches up with more high-end prospective student-athletes & their parents to gather thoughts on the industry-altering news. Premier guard Langford, who lives just across the Ohio River from Louisville, "I just felt like that’s everywhere in college basketball. Louisville is the one that got caught first." More. (link); Who is Christian Dawkins? That's the question ESPN's Goodman and Schlabach explore with a long look. (link); Old Dominion HC Jones: "Shocked, stunned. It was crazy. … I think it’s a huge mistake to say the entire college coaching profession is corrupt, because that’s not true, but if it’s as rampant as some people suggest, then something needs to be done. It certainly has given college basketball coaching a black eye. People can get outraged, and I’m sure a lot of people are, but it’s just sad. You’re going to have to clean it up before you can build (it) back." (link)
USA Today's Wolken takes a look at package deals in MBB that not too long ago were looked at with extreme suspicion. Missouri could be a big winner with new HC Martin hiring AC Porter Sr., leading to the commitments of his two highly-ranked sons, plus other notable recruits who followed the momentum, who will all suit up for the Tigers this season. Porter Jr.: "I always wanted to do my own thing and be remembered for years and years instead of being just another great player to go to an outstanding school. I really want to leave a legacy in college." Martin: "I don’t get consumed with nobody else and their business, but I was initiating those calls from the standpoint of, I wanted to make sure that if you hear of anything (outside the rules), see anything, let me know about it because that’s not how I operate and I never will and I pray to God I’ll never get involved with any of that." More. (link)
Eastern Michigan AD Wetherbee hires Texas Tech Asst. AD for Promotions and Fan Engagement Rowdon as the next Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs in Ypsilanti. Job comes with usual external areas of oversight, as well as sport admin duties. Rowdon, who previously worked at Arizona State, Old Dominion, LSU and Georgetown, begins with the Eagles on October 16. Wetherbee: "Andy is going to be a great fit for our athletics program. His wide-range of experience managing the various aspects of external operations will help us strive for the best fan experience possible." (link)
Northwestern's Kellogg School Asst. Professor Minor, Spigit's Chief Customer Officer Brook and Groundswell author Bernoff contribute to Harvard Business Review: "Data From 3.5 Million Employees Shows How Innovation Really Works." Minor analyzed five years of data from 154 public companies and 3.5M employees that used the idea management system Spigit and discovered that "innovation is, indeed, a science." Key variable across all companies is the ideation rate (# of ideas approved divided by total # of active users in the system) and the trio identified four factors that most heavily influenced it: 1. Scale - more participants; 2. Frequency - more ideas; 3. Engagement - more people evaluating ideas; and 4. Diversity - more kinds of people contributing. In closing: "In the Internet era, with the pace of innovation always accelerating, understanding the science of innovation could make all the difference in your ability to compete." (link)

Another Dallas/Fort Worth-based institution is looking to join the DI ranks as Tarleton State (DII) formed a task force charged with examining a possible jump & met for the first time on Friday. Finances were chief among concerns for the group composed primarily of faculty and executive staff, particularly where the roughly $1.5M application fee would come from. Possibilities discussed include using reserves from university services fees, Texan Club gift revenue or sales and service revenue, taking out a loan, reinstating fees waived for non-Stephensville students, or raising athletics fees. Asst. AD for Compliance and committee member Boyd: “It’s gonna be tough, especially when there’s a four-year transition period where we will still play D-II while transition to D-I. It’s gonna hurt, especially for specific sports, but I think it’s something we can overcome.” Athletics will put up $25K to update a 2014 feasibility study, with the potential for a conference invite to come by the end of the calendar year. Providence AD Driscoll has been appointed to a three-year term on the ECAC Board of Directors. ECAC Prez/CEO Coonan: "We are so pleased that Bob Driscoll is joining the Board of Directors of the ECAC. Bob has done such a great job at Providence, and is so incredibly well respected nationally and within our footprint, he will be a tremendous addition to our group." (link)
Southern Miss AD Gilbert commented yesterday on future apparel deals now that Russell Athletic has announced it's getting out of the uniform business. Gilbert: "One, it's important, this will be the first ever comprehensive apparel partnership for Southern Miss Athletics. And so, I want to partner with a national brand that can support all of our sports teams. I'm excited about where those discussions are and think we'll have a good product for our student-athletes to compete in." (link)
Penn State AD Barbour discussed the importance of "why" at Evanta's Collegiate Sports Summit in an interview on AthleticDirectorU. Barbour goes Simon Senek with variation of, "People don't buy what you do, people buy why you do it." Barbour also notes the importance of achieving buy-in before the hard times hit, how sometimes leaders don't give change enough time to develop, the never-ending battle of collaboration vs. competition in college athletics, as well as her view on women working up the ranks in our industry & more. (link)
Tix: Clemson FB HC Swinney and Tigers student-athletes have noticed the holes in the student section. Swinney, prior to last weekend's game against Wake Forest: "We need our students to be there the whole game. And we need our fans to be there in the third quarter. We need to show up, and let's have the same great atmosphere as we have every single week, not be a place that shows up (just) for GameDay or night games. Our players, we're going to ask them to show up regardless. That's what we do. We need to have the best atmosphere we've had all year this weekend." Swinney calls on the administration to deal with the situation, and it issued a statement, in part, after the game against the Deacs: "We are going to be working on this issue over the next 20 days prior to the Georgia Tech game, and continue to find the best – and safest – possible way for our students to continue to support our football program." Students used just half of the 3K allocated "Hill Tickets" against Wake and only 7,613 of the 10,724 designated student tix overall, the lowest numbers of the season. (linklink); With ESPN College GameDay coming to town, tickets for the James Madison-Villanova kick on Saturday, which run around $35 face value, are selling for $120-$300 on Stub Hub. (link)
The Athletic's Hamilton spends the day with Michigan State MBB student-athlete Bridges, dubbing him "the big man (back) on campus" as the sophomore star could have easily gone the one-and-done route. Bridges stands by the fact that he never considered jumping ship after just one season with the Spartans: "I wanted to feel like I’m ready to be out in the real world. Right now I don’t have to worry about paying bills, or being like a financial guy. I’m at a place where I can trust people. If I’m out in the real world I really can’t trust anybody." The non-TV watching, cat-loving, people-loving, Flint, MI native Bridges "beats to his own drum" according to HC Izzo. Long, but interesting read. (link)
ESPN: SC6 co-anchor Hill has been suspended for two weeks, though no word on if it's with or without pay. The Worldwide Leader says it's Hill's second violation & admonishes an "impulsive tweet" as the culprit. (linklink); The tweet in question looks to be Hill encouraging followers to protest against Dallas Cowboys owner Jones due to his latest comments about players kneeling during the national anthem by boycotting his sponsors. (link); As a result of yesterday's decision. SC6 co-anchor Smith sat out Monday's program. (link); No MBB Tip-off Marathon across the ESPN family due to programming challenges, could return in the future. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Latest SBJ: A particularly robust edition, starting with a MBB writer's roundtable looking at the latest developments in the sport. USA Today's Wolken on a key question that remains, "Are those wiretapped conversations eventually going to be made public? That will be fascinating." Lots more. (link); Michael Smith provides notes on, "What's Next for Learfield-IMG College deal." Michigan law professor & antitrust expert Crane: "Will the effect of the merger substantially lessen competition in the market? They would determine how many firms compete in that market, and whether other firms might enter." (link); Athlete Viewpoint & RealRecruit get the spotlight treatment for important work they're doing in the student-athlete experience space. (link); Media guru Ourand pens on the ESPN-Altice deal, says the Worldwide Leader is the clear winner. Some deal terms include a four-year length, at least a 6.5% increase, dropping ESPN Classic. Ourand says he's shocked the SEC & ACC Networks were picked up. This is really all you need to know, "Reports of the cable bundle’s death are greatly exaggerated. Cord cutting and cord shaving are happening and are a threat to the pay-TV business. But this deal suggests that distributors and programming networks will work together to try to keep the pay-TV system afloat. The pay-TV dynamic will not dramatically change for the next five to eight years, for programming that matters." (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues his stance that the Pac-12 should "tweak" FB schedules to give those with the best likelihood of making the College FB Playoff a better chance to run the table. Like he did with USC, points to Washington's slate as another example of the league not being strategic enough. This Saturday, the Huskies, who faced Cal in a late night game in Seattle last Saturday, travel to Arizona State, which is coming off a bye week. It's one of three such scenarios for UW this season. While Wilner says he's not advocating for easier paths, it certainly seems like he is, "..subtle tweaking to avoid egregious situations for contenders seems like smart business when the end game is the College Football Playoff and Pac-12 teams are already at a disadvantage on so many fronts with the schedule." (link)
Washington FB HC Petersen was asked about the criticism he received from ESPN broadcasters over the weekend after taking issue last week with his team's late kickoff times this season. When asked if he regretted his earlier comments, Petersen was resolute in saying: "Not at all. I spoke my mind. ... I just try to be honest. There are certain times you do stand up for certain things, and then you move on." When asked about the criticism he received from ESPN, Petersen said: "It is what it is. Like I said, we just need to move on. ... It’s easy to get all caught up in all kinds of stuff that’s really not going to help you win games on Saturday." (link)
Oklahoma State FB HC Gundy commented Monday on the amount of parity in the Big 12 this year and how that will help Texas Tech AD Hocutt advocate for the league as chair of the College Football Playoff Committee. Gundy: "The quarterback play in this league has created parity, more so than ever before. The things that sway games in this league would be turnovers, special teams play, injuries and quarterback play." And on how the league's parity may help with the way in which it is perceived: "It's easier to get into the playoff if you're undefeated. We all know that. How the committee sees our league this year will be different, in my opinion, than it has in the last few years. If Kirby's worth his salt at all, he should get that accomplished in that committee." (link)
Vermont will rename center court in Patrick Gymnasium as "Tom Brennan Court" in honor of former MBB HC Brennan, who wrapped up his 19-year tenure at UVM in 2005, leaving with the most wins in program history. AD Schulman: "It's incredibly fitting that Coach Brennan's name will forever be linked to the court on which he played such an instrumental role in developing UVM men's basketball into one of the top mid-major programs in the country." Brennan: "I’m not the best coach Vermont’s ever had. I’m not the best basketball coach Vermont’s ever had. But nobody is prouder than me to be the coach here." (link)
Also Noticed: Elon names its first female prez in current Citadel Provost Book, who will take over outgoing Prez Lambert's spot in March 2018. (link); The second finalist for the Iowa State presidency is Georgia Provost Whitten, who will be on campus in Ames today. (link); UCLA now has an "official tire" in Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp as the pair signed a three-year deal that includes Toyo signage at the Rose Bowl Stadium and Pauley Pavilion. (link); Indiana installs Danley loudspeakers at University Memorial Stadium as a temporary fix during its renovation. The "Jericho Horns" will be placed in their permanent locations next season. (link); Even Auburn's band gets in on the arms race, with its new $3M Band Practice Complex that includes two dressing rooms, instrument storage and an artificial turf and practice pavilion. (link); Beginning this spring, substitutions will be allowed in stroke and match play during the regionals and finals of the DI Men's Golf Championships. Subs were permitted only in the match-play portion this past season. (link); With eight confirmed cases of mumps among the Syracuse student population, including members of the Men's and Women's LAX teams, both squads are shutting down practices and scrimmages for the rest of the fall season. (link); Important: The New Jersey Sports Gambling Appeal will go before the Supreme Court in December. (link)
