WASHINGTON WILD NEWS

WWFHL Inaugural League Games Begin

The Western Washington Female Hockey League (WWFHL) games kicked off this past weekend with amazing success as history was made with the start of the first all-girl league in Washington State.

Players took the ice with pride in their new league jerseys bearing the Washington Wild crest, league emblem, and 15th anniversary patch on their sleeves.

Games were tight, fast pasted, and competitive at all the age brackets, with several ties. Most importantly, Highland Ice Arena was invaded by smiling female hockey players from the early morning to the early afternoon.

Washington Wild 10U Team Red tied both Team White and Team Grey. The 12U/14U Red Team defeated Team White 5-2. And at the 8U age level where score isn’t kept, there was a lot of back and forth play between the two teams.

We look forward to a great inaugural season for the league and congratulate the entire WWFHA family – players, parents, coaches, and volunteers – for this historic moment that was a long time in coming!

Check out each Team Page for photos from the first weekend of games.

Call to Action: City Council Hearing

The Public Hearing on Civic Arenas needs a WWFHA hockey presence on Tuesday, October 10th at 5:30pm.

All signs point to the new Seattle Center Arena opening as early as October 2020. The sooner an NHL team arrives, the more likely WWFHA will have access to more ice. There is a direct impact.

We need to continue to show the City Council that there is much passion for pro hockey and all the benefits to the community it brings. We need to reinforce the message that there is great support for hockey and female hockey in the area.

Show up, wear your WWFHA hockey jersey, and/or sign up for public comment (2 minute comment max). Let the City Council know that you are a hockey fan, support the Seattle Center Arena project, support having an NHL team here, and that both will bring more opportunities to female hockey players!

This path is our clearest route to bringing an NHL team to Seattle and getting more desperately needed ice in the area.

    Public Hearing on Civic Arenas
    Date: October 10th
    Time: 5:30 pm
    Council Chamber, City Hall
    600 4th Avenue
    Seattle, WA 98104

Thank you NHLtoSeattle for rallying the community around this cause!

NACAC National College Fair

WWFHA’s pro-staff member in College Admissions, Kiersten Murphy of Murphy College Consultants, recommends the NACAC National College Fair in the coming weeks. She writes:

Fall is a great time to get to know colleges while they visit the Seattle area. The
NACAC national college fair comes to Seattle on October 27th and 28th and I want to encourage you to save the date. Colleges from across the U.S. and overseas will be in attendance. You can view a full list of those that will be in attendance https://hub.nacacnet.org/CollegeFairDirectory?id=a0k1a00000Acd0VAAR

Many colleges will also be visiting your school counseling office during the next month - if your school allows you to miss class to talk to them, I highly encourage you to do so, especially if you happen to be applying to the college.

Additionally, many colleges make presentations while in the area, and if you aren't on their mailing list, you might not be getting an invitation. To get on mailing lists, visit the school you interested in online, and sign up.

The Hockey Community -- a great tribe in the face of tradegy

Special to WWFHA: Daniel Brown – Beginners’ Director / Board member writes in his September blogpost:

The Hockey Community – a great tribe in the face of tragedy

With the recent horrific images from, Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico coming in I was dumfounded at the level of tragedy happening around the U.S and the Caribbean. Then the news of Las Vegas and the mass shooting opened my morning.  The level of loss and injury at the hands of what appears to be a mentally ill man with an assault rifle is just staggering and heartbreaking. Most of us are walking around in a daze with the ever-present question on our lips. Why? I cannot pretend to know the answer and will make no attempt to do so here.

In the wake of yet another, in a recent parade of tragedies, I am impressed and inspired by the hockey community.

Experts' Edge

Q: Is My Kid Talented?

We share this great article from the Minnesota Hockey website:

Talent.

It’s a word that gets used frequently in the world of youth sports, and if we’re being honest with ourselves… we’ll admit we LOVE talent. We love watching the best players at any age perform skills beyond their years. We love it even more if it happens to be our kid who is drawing people’s attention.  Our infatuation with talent is the primary reason certain kids are labeled as talented before they’re even able to tie their own skates.

But what does talent really mean?

Here are three important things to keep in mind regarding talented young athletes:
1) Many times what appears to be natural ability is a combination of unknown factors.
2) Current success is not a guarantee for future results.
3) The way we treat talented young players impacts their mindset and development.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these three and why they matter.
