Two Houses One Heart

October 2017

A reminder of what we do...
OUR MISSION:  We make it easier for families to support their loved one receiving medical care by providing them a homelike, comforting place to stay.

1.  To support increased access to quality healthcare
Many Southwest Michigan residents in need of medical care turn to the excellent health care facilities in Kalamazoo. However, financial and transportation constraints can create a barrier to accessing care.  The House provides free lodging, and in partnership with our hospitals, daily transportation from the House to the hospital or cancer center.  We are often told by our cancer patients that they couldn’t get their daily treatments without us.

2.  To support patient and family centered healthcare
Research has proven that family involvement in their loved one's care helps speed recovery and lowers the risk of complications.  Family members serve as spokespersons, advocates and supporters. By providing families with free lodging in close proximity to Kalamazoo health care facilities, the House enables them to spend more time at the patient's bedside.

3.  To provide families comfort and emotional support during stressful, anxious times
The emotional and physical demands of caregiving can strain even the most resilient person.  That's why the House provides a supportive environment that is safe, inviting, and comforting for all families served.  Remember, if caregivers don't take care of themselves, they won't be able to adequately care for anyone else.

86% of surveyed guests told us the House enabled them to rest and maintain their own health.
The Henson Avenue House is up and running...
…and it is awesome!  The grand opening of the first new House was celebrated with a ribbon cutting and open house on August 10.  We opened our doors to overnight guests on August 14 and have been busy ever since!  In the first 36 days of operation we provided 321 nights of lodging to 59 guests for an average length of stay of just over five nights.  The majority of these guests were supporting a cardiac patient.  Preliminary counts suggest a ten-fold increase in referrals from Borgess Hospital units over the same period last year.  Clearly proximity to the patient bedside makes a difference.

We are pleased to introduce Sherry Kuzma as the resident manager at Henson Avenue.  She has a very personal commitment to our mission and is a gentle blessing to our guests and to those of us fortunate to work with her!

We would love to show you this new facility.  Call the office, 269-341-7811, to schedule a tour.
On to South Burdick Street...
We are presently working with Eckert Wordell to make some design changes in order to take best advantage of the Burdick Street site.  Two old homes were razed in late August and we hope to take possession of the properties at 828 and 832 South Burdick soon.
We look forward to an early spring groundbreaking if you will please…
Help us "wrap it up" before the holidays!
Currently we have about $600,000 left to raise before we can put a shovel in the ground on Burdick Street.  Our goal is to complete our fundraising before the holidays so that we can break ground in early spring.  We hope to have our second facility operational before the end of 2018.  With your help, we can do this!  Please help us put the bow on this special gift to our community with a contribution today.
