Nudging Danny off the Autism Spectrum

One year ago, 10 Books A Home (10BH) staff knocked at the door of Danny’s home. Little did he know that his life was about to change. Now, one year into the two-year 10BH program, four-year-old Danny is gradually “nudging” off the autistic spectrum and surpassing educational goals set by the Ravenswood school district in East Palo Alto and The Primary School. Catch the full press release here

Volunteer Spotlight

Sheri Morrison has been a volunteer since early days of 10BH in 2011, when we were piloting our Intrinsic Learning Motivation Program. While we have gone through several iterations of our program offering, Sheri has supported us relentlessly and has been a key collaborator in implementing these different instantiations. She has always shown faith in founder, Paul Thiebaut III, a first time entrepreneur and was never deterred by the umpteen challenges we faced. Sheri has a background in social work, and her commitment to social justice, children and literacy make her an immensely valuable part of our organization. Thank you, Sheri! If you would also like to volunteer with us like Sheri, email us.

Report Card Results

In late October, we will be publishing an analysis of school report cards of four cohorts of 10BH graduates. We hope that an assessment of school performance of these 89 children, who have spent one-to-two years in the ILM Program, will further prove the efficacy of our model. 10 Books A Home first started offering the Intrinsic Learning Motivation program back in 2012 and has collected school report card results ever since. So far, three years of data has shown that 10BH graduates are performing at or above grade level, which is in sharp contrast to their peers, 81% of whom are performing below grade level. Check out our last year’s report cards results here.

“It is amazing to see how the numbers of 10BH stack up against even the entire STATE. We are talking about 10BH graduates - mainly Hispanic, high-poverty, ELL students - performing better than all the kids in California! That's pretty impressive!!!”

Research Gala

We are thrilled to announce our upcoming Research Gala!

In July of 2018, our research partner Applied Survey Research will be concluding a year-long assessment of 10BH program outcomes. The study, funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, will offer key insights into the impact that 10BH’s Intrinsic Learning Motivation Program is having on its participants.

Preliminary results from the study show that most children start 10BH below average in well-known measures of literacy, numeracy, language and executivefunction, reinforcing our mission of reaching the children that need our program the most. There is also additional data from this study showing that children who participate in the 10BH program make huge gains in kindergarten-readiness skills.
