NEW 1.Question brought to you by Turnkey Search: Mario Moccia // Athletic Director // New Mexico State (Part II)
Read - Athletic Director in Residence: Bob Moosbrugger - Bowling Green
Another AD chair opens as longtime Saint Joseph's AD DiJulia announces plans to retire at the end of the 2017-18 academic campaign after 35 years leading the Hawks. Prez Reed: "Don models and represents all that is good in college athletics. He leads a highly visible and immensely complex area with professionalism, passion and, above all, integrity, capturing the admiration of coaches, athletes, peers and fans. Don’s legacy is etched on the University’s playing fields and courts and in the hearts of the Hawks he’s led." DiJulia: "While I’ve had so many special relationships and been part of innumerable special moments, I want to dedicate myself to focusing on this year and reminisce later." DiJulia's move means we're up to 19 AD searches around the nation, 20 if Louisville officially opens. (link)
USA Today's Wolken indicated Ole Miss AD Bjork & Turnkey Search may be talking about the opportunity at Nebraska. Wolken on Bjork: "Bjork...didn’t hire Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss, and it’s widely known that the support to keep Freeze until his phone records revealed phone calls to sexually suggestive businesses came from above Bjork’s head. He remains highly respected in the industry and understands the public relations side of the job." Later in the day, Bjork dismissed the report, "No. I'm committed here. I'm committed to the University of Mississippi, Ole Miss athletics. Chancellor (Jeff) Vitter has been steadfast in his support and he's been terrific to work with. We have a lot of work to do and we're going to see that work get completed. I know we have challenges, but there's more opportunities than challenges and we're going to seize on those opportunities." (linklink)
Rutgers boss Hobbs sees his deal to continue leading the Scarlet Knights extended through 2021-22 with options until 2023-24. Base salary advances from $560K to $615K, then again to $625K in 2018-19, $632K in 2019-20 & no less than $635K in 2020-21 & beyond. Annual deferred comp = $100K, plus up to $192K in annual performance bonuses. University statement, in part, "Pat Hobbs is an outstanding leader of the Rutgers Athletics program. He took over the department at a difficult time and took immediate steps to set the program on a positive course. He has effectively managed NCAA compliance issues and has revamped the coaching staff. He has achieved unprecedented fundraising success, which has led to numerous improvements in facilities for our current and future student athletes." (link)
Looks like Richmond will start to interview its AD candidates in the near future in a process aided by College Sports Associates. MBB HC Mooney on what he's looking for in a new boss, "I would probably say someone hard-working and intelligent and those things, but also someone who has an appreciation for how unique Richmond is. That’s probably pretty critical to this particular position." FB HC Huesman: "For me, I just want to coach my team and be around my guys, my players. They’ll make the right decision. I don’t think there’s a question about that." (link)
Louisville: The Courier-Journal's Greer on Cards AD Jurich returning to his seat, "This shapes up as a Grissom (and Postel) vs. Jurich battle, and that is a high-powered struggle in the university community. Grissom is a successful businessman who is known for his tough persona, and Jurich has a similar reputation." Greer also says "good luck" in trying to predict where the showdown ends up. (link); The Courier-Journal's Wolfson also created some waves yesterday with her look at Jurich's compensation particulars. Personally, I was surprised how much traction this piece received as it's no secret Jurich has been very well paid for quite some time. Of note, Wolfson points to $19.27M earned by Jurich over the last seven years, including a taxable income haul of $5.3M last year alone. Lots more, like annual Derby & Oaks tickets, two country club memberships, life insurance coverage + an overage, lifetime tickets for the Jurich family, etc. (link); Another piece that got all sorts of attention was a review of UofL's deal with Adidas, 98% of which previously went to MBB HC Pitino. (link); CBSSports.com's Dodd gets feedback from industry insiders on what a death penalty for Louisville MBB would mean for the ACC's coming linear network. AAC Commish Aresco: "I have done contracts for both sides. You typically would have the ability to negotiate [if a member leaves]. Whether you could terminate it, that would take a lot." A bit more. (link); Moody's could downgrade the university's credit rating once again, this time as a result of the MBB situation. (link); Interim AD Tyra will represent the Cards at ACC meetings later this month. (link)
The Learfield-IMG College merger docs have been signed. Learfield Prez & CEO Brown, who will lead the combined company, points to innovation, efficiency & better positioning "to champion the success of collegiate athletics in the years ahead through the development of new services and offerings that will provide greater benefits to our clients and brand partners than either company could do alone." The new board will be made up of leaders from Learfield, Atairos, WME-IMG & Silver Lake. (link); Accompanying the press release is a useful & informative one-sheeter on the competitive benefits of the merger, plus an outline of rivals that remain in the marketplace & additional options for athletic departments to monetize their multimedia rights. (link)
The News & Observer's Carter tickled early in the day with word that the NCAA planned to release its final report on North Carolina's long-running academic saga investigation. Later, the announcement was pushed back as UNC is unveiling a major "multi-billion dollar" capital campaign today. Carter: "That the NCAA intended to release its findings on Friday indicates that the infractions committee completed its work sooner than anticipated. The standard length of time for the committee to release its findings is between eight to 12 weeks; UNC appeared before the committee about seven weeks ago." No word on an exact date of when the final report will now be shared. (link)
More Hoops Saga: Oklahoma State HC Boynton: "I haven't really thought about my job status, to be perfectly honest. I'm really focused on the team. I haven't been given any reason [to worry] about that." (link); Attorney for the agency-affiliated Dawkins: "Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of the reality of the business of college basketball and the NCAA would question the scope, timing and targets of this investigation. Our immediate concerns are only focused on defending Christian Dawkins and supporting his family through this difficult time." (link); Miami (FL) HC Larranaga expects he and his staff will be exonerated. (link); AL.com's Talty asks "Could the Adidas scandal change how brands spend on college sponsorships?" NPD Group's Powell thinks "Brands are spending far too much money on endorsement deals with no home of seeing a return." Baker Street Advertising's Dorfman: "Yes, this may put a damper on the size of future deals. And those deals will be so closely examined; they'll have to be extra-cautiously constructed and activated." (link)
ESPN's McGee with a long read on the gamesmanship of cramped & dingy visiting team locker rooms as former Georgia AD & FB HC Dooley remarks, "These are football players, for heaven's sake. Are we trying to be tough or spoiled? All those years I traveled for games, if I'd walked into a visiting locker room and found a couch and some ferns, honestly, I think I would have been way more insulted than I ever was with the bad stuff." Washington State HC Leach recalls a bare room at Mississippi State, called it "exquisite." Of course, Iowa's famous pink visiting digs are discussed in depth, as is the practice of making away squads trek a long distance for suitable space. Lots more. (link)
Auburn AD Jacobs has been asked to serve on the U.S. Olympic Committee's first Collegiate Advisory Council, the goal of which is to "align, advocate and advance the Olympic and collegiate shared mission to support student-athletes in achieving competitive excellence." Jacobs: "I am honored to be part of such a worthy cause. My commitment has been and always will be, to use the power of athletics to create an expanded culture of winning where the concept of team refers not only to sport, but also to working together for the greater good of all humankind." Colleagues joining Jacobs on the 10-member CAC include Penn State AD Barbour, Big 12 Commish Bowlsby, Stanford AD Muir, Oregon AD Mullens, Texas Women's AD Plonsky, Ohio State AD Smith, Florida AD Stricklin, Alabama AD Byrne, Florida State AD Wilcox and Duke AD White, who will serve as the chairman. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
The Pac-12 & Alibaba agree to an expanded relationship that will see league content shared via linear & digital lines in China through 2024. Alibaba will also sponsor the league's hoops game in the country through 2020. 175 games will now be broadcast live throughout the mainland. Commish Scott: "Expanding global fan interest in our conference and member universities through sport, along with providing unique international opportunities for our student-athletes, are at the core of our Pac-12 Global initiative." (link)
presented by Anthony Travel
Staying on topic, Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner notes how the Alibaba deal timeline of a 2024 expiration matches up with the rest of the league's Tier I broadcast rights here in the States. Points to early 2023 as the likely negotiation window for the conference's most valuable inventory & believes an equity sale gets less & less likely every day that passes. Oregon State Prez Ray: "We’ll see where things go (in the future) and whether it makes sense to bring on a partner." As for potential iterations for Pac-12 Networks, Wilner notes how Comcast is paying for all 850 live broadcasts over seven feeds, effectively concluding, "Comcast, not the universities, owns the Pac-12 Networks." A major upcoming marker is the renegotiating of AT&T's deal, which Wilner expects to be extended to also coincide with 2024. Notable media consultant Bevilacqua's ultimately expects linear & OTT to co-exist, but also says about the broader marketplace, "I’ve never seen the pace of change that we’ve seen in the last three or four years, and I think it will accelerate. It’s like a tsunami." More. (link)
Michigan AD Manuel and Michigan State AD Hollis wrote a joint letter to fans that addresses their expectations regarding conduct and behavior for the FB game this weekend between the two schools. The letter reads, in part: "Our two universities can show that civility and respect can be a hallmark of not only college sports but what we need to strive for in our society. ... On behalf of both institutions, we invite you all to represent yourself and your favorite side in a manner befitting our proud communities." (link)
San Diego State has selected Populous to aid in the design process of a new FB stadium in Mission Valley. Populous Senior Principal Radecic on the vision, "Our aspiration is to make it something uniquely San Diego, make it authentic to the place it sits as well as the people of the region, that ethos of what it means to be a student at San Diego State and what it means to live in San Diego ... The university has a big, bold vision here." Aztecs AD Wicker points to a 90-day study to include renderings & a financial analysis for a cost of $100K. The San Diego Tribune's Zeigler thinks the decision to go with Populous means SDSU is serious about its own push for the Mission Valley space & is not surprising as the firm has led some of the most recent notable stadium builds across the nation, like Colorado State's new digs. (link)
Learfield & George Mason extended their deal through June 2022 & the Patriots will get a new center-hung scoreboard in EagleBank Arena, as a result. Installation expected prior to this year's hoops slate tipping. (link); Clemson & JMI Sports get a seven-year campus-wide agreement done with Founders Federal Credit Union. In addition to athletics assets, Founders will be highly visible on campus as the sponsor of the university's new bike share program, supporting recreation options & more. Financials: Nearly $6M over seven years. (link)
For the past three matches a handful of Virginia Tech's Volleyball student-athletes have knelt during the national anthem, but moving forward the team, as a whole, has decided to stand with interlocking arms. HC Wilson: "They love this country and they want to promote racial harmony. They definitely feel that our country can improve, that we can have more equality across the country in many ways." Additionally, student-athletes will write on the tape on their wrists what the flag means to them personally, their aspirations for the country and for what they are playing. More Wilson: "Across the country, people are finding new vehicles to promote harmony and racial equality, and they felt like this was a new idea that they could do this weekend at home — to be able to do that and not conflict with the anthem. This was our team coming together as a group and listening to each other and having a very mature discussion." (link)
Maine MBB HC Walsh caught up with South Carolina peer Martin on his Dynamic Leadership Podcast via AthleticDirectorU. The pair covered a number of leadership topics, including Martin's view of authenticity, "You have to be authentic. When kids sense phoniness, they’re done….they will never listen to you again." Other notable takeaways from the Gamecocks' boss, "We can’t stop holding kids accountable, we can’t stop challenging them...because when they get older, everyday is a challenge. […] Consistently communicate with your players from a place of honesty so they know that you are always telling them the truth." (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Iowa Prez Harreld discussed the gender and sexual discrimination lawsuit settlement between the Hawkeyes and former staffers Meyer and Griesbaum, "We were a little sloppy about our performance evaluations. We are not direct enough and we do not document enough. I’ve had conversations with attorneys and the Attorney General’s office, saying, 'How do you advise organizations like ours, which are subject to (Freedom of Information Act requests), to document this?' There’s a cultural disconnect here. We’re living in a public world where we all tend to say, 'I have to be careful what I put on paper,' even though many of these employee-related issues are protectable by FOIA. But our behavior is not to document. ... It became quite apparent to me that it wasn’t just the athletic department. There was a lot of other people and parts of the university in that whole process. The General Counsel’s office was in that, the office of the President was in that. This notion it was just the athletic department is a nice story, but it’s a lot more complex. I decided we would bring in an outside group to evaluate our employment practices. What does that mean? It means how we hire, how we compensate, the feedback process and the termination process. Not only in the athletic department, but across the academic institution as well as the hospital ... this is a wonderful time to pause and make sure there’s no discriminatory practices and policies." AD Barta indicates he's fully committed to bettering his department. (link)
Troy AD McClain continues with perspective on how FB's win at LSU may alter things down the road for the Trojans. Figures there may be a bit of residual challenges on the scheduling front, but "I think we probably overestimate how much impact that might have." Points to a facilities portfolio that he thinks is as good as any other around the 'Group of 5.' On the Adidas situation, believes mid-major hoops has different mechanics to those in the power conferences, has had surface conversations with Three Stripes since the news broke, will have more when the time is right. (link)
With TCU and West Virginia preparing to square off this weekend on the gridiron, Big 12 Diehards dives into the links between the two schools since they became the Big 12's newest members in 2012. It is opportunities like hosting "College Gameday" on Saturday that TCU FB HC Patterson is appreciative of: "We’ve been a part of GameDay five times, but we haven’t been here in Fort Worth since 2009. We’re appreciative of the opportunity to do that again. Where TCU would be if we hadn’t joined the Big 12, I don’t think there’s even close to a comparison." (link)
Gameday tickets sales look to be the difference between Old Dominion extending its 56-game sell-out streak at Foreman Field. As of yesterday, 1K tickets remained as Assoc. AD for Strategic Marketing & Revenue Generation Chandler indicated the match-up with Florida Atlantic was concerning due to fall break for students & limited visiting team pick up. (link); A student ticket for some Michigan home FB games is so hot right now students are making a profit selling their options on Facebook. One student indicates there's such a margin to be made he's turned to brokering deals with his largest haul so far of $150 for a seat. (link)
Personnel: Howard Deputy AD Davis named the Big South's Senior Assoc. Commish/SWA and will oversee WBB operations, internal affairs and other sports administrative duties. (link); UAB AD Ingram brings former Virginia Tech staffer Frazier on board as Assoc. AD for Development after promoting Hardekopf to Senior Assoc. AD for External Affairs. (link); Clemson Baseball HC Lee gets a one-year contract extension to keep him with the Tigers through 2023 at $2.85M over the next six years. This year's salary is $450K, with increases along the way to reach $500K by the final two years of the deal. Automatic one-year extension for a CWS appearance is one of the many performance bonuses included. (link)
Also Noticed: Of note for Virginia's AD search, marketing professor Heilman tabbed the Cavs new FAR, replacing Callahan, who has served in the role since 1997. (link); With Tropical Storm Nate heading to shore, Southern has moved its homecoming kickoff against Alabama A&M up to 1 p.m., five hours earlier than originally scheduled. All other activities surrounding the Homecoming weekend have been cancelled. (link); Florida State has decided not to adjust it's kick time with Miami in Tallahassee tomorrow, sticks with 3:30 p.m. as weather projections have Nate heading west of the panhandle. (link); Raycom Sports and the Atlantic Coast Conference announced the launch of football content to ACC Virtual Reality presented by Havoline. The mobile application, developed in partnership between Raycom Sports, the ACC, and EON Sports and will offer unique football 360 content from each ACC school that includes behind the scenes footage, on field and sideline perspectives, locker room tours, and more. (link); The San Diego County Credit Union Holiday Bowl will loan its football-field sized American flag (aka "Big Flag") for use at the San Diego State-UNLV FB game in Vegas tomorrow night. (link); The legal battle between Kent State, Flashes former MBB HC Ford and Bradley University continues. (link); Netflix bumps up its monthly subscription price a buck, now $10.99 for the two-stream HD tier package. Yesterday the company's shares (NFLX) hit an all time high of $194.49. (link)
1.Question brought to you by Turnkey Search
In part two of his 1.Q, New Mexico State AD Mario Moccia dives into his strategies of how to deal with negative media members. Moccia: "I never understood why there'd be animosity with anyone in the media. [...] I always thought, 'I'm going to be friendly with these folks,' and if I screw something up, it deserves to be in the newspaper." Interestingly, Mario also notes which current & former ADs he thinks do the best job working with their local media. Listen by clicking the link. (link) (length - 6:46)
