A multidisciplinary, joint student-faculty team is researching the feasibility of renewable microgrids in Ann Arbor. The microgrids were presented to the City as a cost-effective source of energy capable of providing energy in case of a city-wide blackout. Installation costs for renewables (especially solar) have declined steadily for the past several years and are projected to continue decreasing.

The University of Michigan’s Solar Car Team will participate at the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge in Australia.
The team, which has been a consistent top-performer in the race since 1990, has debuted an unconventional, but extremely aerodynamic design that they hope will win this year’s World Solar Challenge.

A team of 17 University of Michigan researchers estimated that up to a third of Earth’s parasite species will become extinct by year 2070 due to climate change.
Despite their bad reputation, parasites help control wildlife populations and keep energy flowing through food chains. Their loss could dramatically disrupt numerous ecosystems.

Michigan Dining is now using SMART Temps wireless temperature monitoring in the refrigerators and freezers of MDining halls. The monitoring system is helping to increase energy efficiency while keeping foods safe.
This allows employees to be more productive since they can focus on food service, rather than manual temperature checking.

A joint study between Stanford University and U-M found that soil has a much greater potential of trapping carbon dioxide than previously thought.
U-M's Luke Nave (Biological Station and EEB) has noted that, “the sequestration of soil carbon—which is the principal constituent of soil organic matter—is considered a promising way to mitigate atmospheric carbon pollution and climate change.”
