Student Starts Nonprofit
Tuskegee campus member Sydney Clayborne decided this past summer that she was going to do something to make a difference.  While she was home on break, she started an initiative called Mission Empower.

"I founded this organization because I saw a need in the communities around me and felt as if African-American youth really need that push for opportunity," said Sydney. "Many people often talk about achievement gaps, but at Mission Empower, we believe that is more of an opportunity gap. If students can be given opportunity then they can grow to be successful and productive members of society."

Mission Empower's first project to achieve this objective was to raise
money to buy school supplies for a kindergarten classroom at Longwood Elementary School in Glenwood IL.  Sydney worked passionately to accumulate funds to help 25 students who didn't have enough money to purchase school supplies. She reached her goal, and the teacher of the class, Ms. Marcus, was overjoyed to receive the materials.
The Adopt A Classroom project is only the beginning of what Sydney envisions for Mission Empower.  "Our mission at Mission Empower is to work with and mentor African-American youth to empower them by fostering leadership, professional, and social-emotional growth," she said.  "We also aim to close the racial educational achievement gap by having programs aimed at continuing skills that may or may not be offered in traditional education settings.  Our goal is to play a role in reversing the social stigma placed on the African-American by providing  tools they need to succeed and grow."

Sydney stated that she feels called to help those who are less fortunate.  "I truly believe that God gave me a vision and a purpose to help those who cannot help themselves if I am in a position to do so," she said.  "My favorite Bible verse is Esther 4:14,  'And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?'  This verse speaks to me because it's a constant reminder that if I have the vision and the passion to make a difference through my organization, then who knows if God has put me here for that purpose."

We are so proud of Sydney and pray for the continued success of Mission Empower.

Wiregrass Women's Day
The women in the Wiregrass House Church (Enterprise) did something special a couple of weeks ago.  They organized a Women's Day Brunch.  Carol Ray, from the North River congregation, was the speaker for the event.  She traveled from Atlanta and brought a friend with her, just to build up the Wiregrass bunch.

"It was very encouraging to our little house church to get together as women and do this," said SeAnne Kaufman, who also said they were grateful for Carol coming down to speak.  "We plan to do something like this every couple of months to reach out to the Enterprise area."

Dena Adams hosted the event and provided a wonderful spread of food.. She lives in Enterprise part time and is devoted to strengthening the ministry.  "This is just the beginning of what I am going to contribute down here," she said.  "My vision is for the house church here to grow into a more permanent church."
There will be a service project at the Brantwood Children's Home in Montgomery on Saturday, October 22.  We will be planning a fun fall event for the young people at the home.  Mark your calendars to attend, and contact Jessica Delgado or Travis Hawkins if you would like to help, or for more information.
