Drawing is.....

....."a means of communication and navigation…a building block of creativity, key to the visualisation and translation of ideas and practices, fundamental in making, doing, testing, designing, thinking, playing and living. It allows us to analyse, map, mark, and form….It can be either a representation, or an expression, creating shadows and memories, marks and imprints, traces in space."
(quote from
Drawn Open Exhibition at RWA, Bristol June 2017)

“Drawing…can get you through things. It’s like in an old Portuguese joke, in which a man is up a ladder painting a wall with a large brush. Another man comes along and wants the ladder, so he says to the first ‘Hold on tight to the brush, I’m just taking the ladder away…’ This is what drawing is like – it grounds you, it connects you so intensely to the paper, through the pencil or the nib or whatever you use, that it’s a lifeline when everything else is taken away. Things can go wrong, but if you just hang on tight to the paper and pen everything will be OK.”
Paula Rego, reported in Paula Rego by Fiona Bradley (Tate Publishing) p.42

Drawing is essential to my practice, being so direct, so engaging, immediate, involving the body, touch, movement. This year my drawing "Waiting for the Performance to Begin (Normansfield Theatre)" was selected for the Drawn exhibition at RWA Bristol (see above). At the end of this month, I will be showing new drawings from my month long residency in Tuscany, August 2017 at my next solo exhibition: Eternal Sunshine (The Stables Gallery, Twickenham). If like me, you are passionate about drawing, or want to have a go, refresh your drawing practice, then check out new drawing courses and exhibition news below, including an exciting new Drawing Lab course Including animation) at Seawhite Studio.

Drawing Lab NEW COURSE
Seawhite Studio
Alternate Fridays 9.30-4.30
Drawing with Light

The focus of this years course will be light. There will be four tutors to guide and inspire you: Katie Sollohub, Emily Ball and Betsy Dadd, Lydia CS. Each term will include a series of materials based workshops including simple animation. As the course progresses you may start to apply given exercises to your own themes and ideas, with more time given for peer group discussion and one to one tutorials. Each student will have the opportunity to present their ongoing work to the group in the later half of the course. The lasting effect of this course is to encourage you to think a little differently about your practice, acknowledge the physical relationship of the body to your work, and engage in your creative practice in an intuitive and experimental way. It might be the perfect time for you to step out of your known practices and see what happens!
