Kyle Abraham / Abraham.In.Motion
Pavement
Dancer and choreographer Kyle Abraham describes his trademark style as “post-modern gumbo”, mixing contemporary and ballet with the hip-hop culture he grew up with. Having previously created work for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, his own company, Abraham.In.Motion, now make their UK debut.
Inspired by John Singleton’s film Boyz n the Hood and influenced by the writings of W.E.B Du Bois, as well as Abraham’s own childhood, Pavement explores the state of black America. It focuses on a culture plagued by discrimination and genocide in Pittsburgh’s historically black neighbourhoods, set to eclectic soundtrack including Sam Cooke, Donny Hathaway, Bach and Vivaldi.
