Team Development for the New Year

The end of the year is fast approaching, bringing with it warmer weather and some well earned time off. The New Year can be a challenge, as we transition from holiday mode to work mode, and January and February can be a quieter time for many businesses. This is a great opportunity to focus on team development, training and wellbeing.

In this months newsletter, we will be discussing the services we can offer in this area, such as our First Aid Group Courses, Wellness Assessments and Ergonomic Assessments. First Aid Group Courses are perfect for bringing your whole teams First Aid skills up to scratch for the new year, and our Wellness Assessments and Ergonomic Assessments offer a great opportunity to educate your employees so they can take ownership of their health outcomes.

Our first public Psychological First Aid Course was a great success this month. This new product was launched during Mental Health Awareness Week on the 13th of October. We received significant positive feedback from this course, and we even had the 1 News team in to record a piece for their news bulletin. You can read more about this below.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, we also started a Wall of Gratitude, for team members to write down on post-it notes, things they are grateful for to stick to the wall. This was a lot of fun and the TriEx team really benefited from this exercise. You can read how this went below.

Enjoy this months read - from the TriEx Team.

Wellness Assessments

Wellness Assessments are of great benefit to your team and entire work community. A healthy lifestyle translates into individuals with more energy, concentration and less absenteeism. We can provide an occupational health nurse to assist with measurement of cardiovascular risk factors and education of interested team members.

The assessments include instant (non-fasting) cholesterol and glucose tests, blood pressure, weights and measures along with a discussion of past and family health history, smoking habits, exercise, sleep, nutrition, stress and alcohol consumption. We are passionate about educating people, so individuals are empowered with knowledge of their risks and encouraged to pass on their results to their own GP as required.

To discuss how we can assist your team with our Wellness Assessments, call us on 0800 487 439 or email enquiries@triex.co.nz today.

Ergonomic Assessments

Ergonomic assessments are used to assess the suitability of the workstations for your desk based team and to ensure it is not contributing to injury or poor posture. Our assessors will recommend practical solutions employing the best ergonomic principles to minimise risk at the workstation.

Our ergonomic assessments can help you:

  • Prevent a condition from developing in the first place
  • Improve workstation design so employees are as comfortable as possible
  • Improve working techniques
  • Ensure employee posture is correct and regular breaks are taken
  • Investigate where discomfort is reported

To find out how we can ensure your team has proper posture at their workstation, call us on 0800 487 439 or email enquiries@triex.co.nz today.

The TriEx Wall of Gratitude

To support Mental Health Awareness Week (October 9-15) and to compliment the launch of our Psychological First Aid Course, we decided to do something to support our TriEx Team.

Although the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week was based around nature this year, we tried to think of some other ideas that would work to support mental health in the workplace. One of the most practical ideas, was to run a wall of gratitude. We thought this would be a simple forum for team members (and it turns our members of the public) to express themselves. We setup "The Great Wall of Gratitude" in our Christchurch reception. We encouraged people to write down a message on an array of coloured post-it notes of what they were grateful for – it could be something related to work or even something in their personal life that has made them smile.

It didn’t take long before messages started appearing and it was fun to keep everyone posted (get it) on the progress!

By the end of the week we were really proud of how our wall was looking. The whole exercise really lifted team spirits and everybody got involved. Having this in our Christchurch reception resulted in members of the public asking to add to it which was awesome!

The week came to an end and we decided to frame as many of the messages as we can for display in our lunch room. This was a very simple idea that really helped with team building.

WorkSafe NZ prosecutions

Canterbury carpet firm Rangiora Carpets was recently fined $180,000 for a highly publicised incident in June where an employee fell from a mezzanine floor that didn't have a building consent.

The employee overbalanced while pushing a box of files in a storage area on a mezzanine floor.

There was nothing for her to grab hold of and she fell 2.5 meters through a suspended false ceiling onto the floor. She received a broken right arm, broken right shoulder, broken right collarbone, fractures to the left side of her pelvis and a laceration to her head.
