    Vuillard and Bonnard

Thursday 19 October 2017

     Speaker: Michael Howard
                        Pierre Bonnard (1867 -1947)                                                      Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940)
Pierre Bonnard
___________________________________________

Michael Howard, pictured above, is a member of the Royal Society of Arts and leader of the School of History & Art of Design at Manchester Metropolitan University where he teaches both academic and non-studio based students. He has also published widely on European art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and is currently President of The Arts Society Bolton!

Michael's talk will be about two artists often considered as painters of the simple pleasures of life – but whose works offer so much more. When they began painting in the 1890s, Impressionism seemed a thing of the past. Their art reaches deep into the psychological aspects of our shared experience – its joys and anxieties in paintings that rank with those of Chardin & Vermeer as objects of sheer visual seduction.
< Pierre Bonnard La Revue Blanche 1894

Vuillard and Bonnard are perhaps not as widely known as some artists, so this should be a very interesting talk from someone well qualified to be on the panel of Arts Society lecturers. For much more information, therefore, do please click here.

After 5 very late cancellations, here's the final courageous group of 42 who visited Budapest for a week last month. We're sitting on the steps of the ancient medieval Cathedral of Ersztergom, a small rural city on the Danube. Frankly we were all in need of a sit down then, after a rather fraught tour delivered totally in Hungarian by a very loquacious local guide, then translated into English by our own Tour Guide who was not a translator – phew! Later, to get a better view of the Cathedral, we took a short photo-opportunity on the other side of the river and were quite surprised to find that we'd actually crossed into Slovakia for the purpose!
Hundreds of photos of the Tour were taken by our own paparazzi, which Ann Madden is now sifting through in order to produce the customary official Album - please watch out for further news, soon.

So...see you on Thursday!

After the lecture, we're holding a reception & light lunch for new members who received their invitations a few weeks ago. The Chairman and everyone associated with the committee very much look forward to meeting you then.

Meanwhile, all the best to everyone on tomorrow's Visit to Beaulieu Motor Museum Palace and Gardens - I hope you have a great time. Don't forget the coach leaves at 8:15 am!

With best wishes
