A crazy day on the gridiron was matched by reports out of College Park that initially indicated Maryland AD Anderson had been dismissed due, in part, to his interest in the opening at Cal. A number of key media voices confirmed the move only to reverse field as the university finally released a statement to the contrary. WaPo's Stubbs sources those close to the situation who say Anderson hasn't been in his office since last month & no department leaders were in or around the press box during yesterday's FB matchup with Northwestern. When contacted, "Anderson texted a screenshot of the school’s announcement to The Washington Post in response to a request for comment on his status. He did not respond to requests for further comment." (link); InsideMDSports.com's Ermann says he almost ran this news last weekend before Under Armour boss Plank stepped to help negotiate Anderson's position. Ermann believes there's talk of diminishing Anderson's role short of his full exit. FB HC Durkin on the news, "I don't know what got out. We didn't even know about it. I don't think our players were even aware of that, to be honest with you." (linklink)
Interim Nebraska AD Rimington indicates his days leading the Huskers are down to only a handful as he expects an AD hire in the near future. Interviews for the opening reportedly occurred last week & the Omaha World-Herald's Barfknecht notes the tight search being run by Turnkey, though four names continue to bubble: Arkansas' Long, Oregon's Mullens, Iowa State's Pollard & Texas Tech's Hocutt. Three others that Barfknecht indicates are getting play, though may not be as likely as the top four: Kentucky's Barnhart, UCF's White & TCU's Del Conte. What do the fans want? Per an insider, "...the people there want football that reflects who they are and how they live their lives — hard-working, straight-forward and no nonsense." (link); The Athletic's Auerbach debates FB HC Riley's situation & if it makes more sense to change direction right now or to let the rest of the season play out. "It may be time to answer some questions and erase some excuses. And it might just be time to make a head-coaching change." (link)
Saturday Recap: With Washington's loss at Arizona State, Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner continues to show results for his hypothesis that the league isn't strategically scheduling well enough to project frontrunners. Main tenants: 1) Squads should not have to play back-to-back Saturday-Friday road games (USC & Washington State Ls); and, 2) Leaders should not have to play on the road against a program coming off a bye week (UW's situation). (link); Stanford HC Shaw on #Pac12AfterDark, "Been mostly good, but ... You've got two really good teams & nobody (in ETZ) sees anything past the first half." The Cardinal defeated Oregon in an 11p EST kick. (link); Yahoo's Thamel runs through the upsets, specific situations at Tennessee, Maryland, Louisville, LSU, Texas A&M & more. (link); USA Today's Wolken says yesterday is an example of why "College football is the best." (link); All in all, one thought comes to my mind every weekend: A balanced outlook & attitude is required for leaders across college athletics as one Saturday can seem to change fortunes so drastically.
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
14K strong showed up to experience ESPN College GameDay at James Madison, up from 12K back in 2015. Dukes AD Bourne: "I honestly felt like the energy level was even bigger and better than before. I think the first time you go through it, there’s a lot you miss when you look at the crowd, and you look at what goes on. (Saturday), I felt like [I] had a chance to take a lot of it in. For what (ESPN’s visit) means to the university and the community is just an incredible thing. It’s not anything we can buy. ... When you talk about national exposure and prominence, it fills the bill." (link); Next Saturday: Penn State-Michigan in Happy Valley. Sixth time the Nittany Lions will host the show. (link)

Minnesota AD Coyle believes his MBB staff will remain in the clear as others around the nation are involved in the FBI's investigation. "The one thing I have learned in being back here for 16, 17 months is that doing it right matters in this state. I promise you and I promise all of our fans that our coaches, our staff, our compliance staff, all of us are focused on doing things the right way all the time." Coyle also says he's talked to a number of his peers around the nation with a prevailing belief they have to protect the game. In the same piece, former Texas Tech/Indiana MBB HC Knight sounds off, who believes it's "good to get rid of all that stuff," thinks the one-and-done culture has something to do with where we find ourselves today. (link)
Highly-ranked prospective MBB student-athlete Brooks decommits from USC, points to the current issues surrounding the Trojans. "Due to unforeseen circumstances stemming from the recent news that has come to light in regards to the Trojan basketball program — I have decided to reopen my commitment to examine other available options. While USC is still very much a possibility, the uncertainty of their situation has led me to believe I should reassess my own." USC AD Swann on what's next, "If you can tell me what the time frame of the FBI, the NCAA and any investigator is, I'd be happy to know. It would help out a lot." (link)
Baylor brass continue to mention a possible replacement for the Ferrell Center as the arms race shows no signs of slowing down. Bears AD Rhoades provides more insights on how he sees the challenge, indicates the following two questions are always on an AD's mind: 1) "Are we giving our coaches the best chance to compete at the highest level; and 2) how does that compare to the schools which we’re competing against?" More determinations should be made in the next six months, capacity less than Ferrell's 10,284 seems to be the consensus. (link)
Check out Montana's new Champions Center that was dedicated on Friday. This 1:15 video from 8KPAX shows the new weight room, turf space, meeting rooms, FB locker room & lounge with a in-detail look at the lockers for FB student-athletes, plus a wall celebrating those who have moved on to the NFL. Not shown are new coaches offices & stadium-facing features of upgraded concessions & restrooms. (link)
Forbes contributor Dosh with a neat read on Pilot Flying J Chief Experience Officer Haslam Johnson, the marketing decision-maker behind the company's massive Battle at Bristol sponsorship, "We're a big company, but in a lot of ways we're still the best kept secret on the interstate. I felt strongly it was time to tell our story." This past summer, Johnson followed her big play up by becoming the "Official Travel Center" of the SEC as 275 stores sit in the league's footprint. It's a four-year, multimillion dollar pact that also includes alignment with the SEC Network's Finebaum. Johnson's advice for advancing women, "Early on in my career (listening) wasn't a strength of mine. Then I learned that if you don't listen to the details of what people are saying you miss connecting with them and then you can't teach them or give them advice." More. (link)
WSJ's Stevens with a profile on Amazon's Worldwide Consumer chief Wilke "who obsesses over customers." Notes a hard & true Amazon practice of "disagreeing, but committing," as he did with the Kindle launch that ended up working out quite well. This is gold: "Once we make a decision, we just move on. There are too many opportunities to invent for customers to keep score. All of us have been wrong at various times." Wilke also points to interview situations where he's looking for a prioritization of customer over competition as an indicator of if a candidate will fit. More. (link)

A Tucson woman has filed a lawsuit against Arizona claiming its leadership didn't do enough to protect her from repeated domestic violence at the hands of former FB student-athlete Bradford. Violation of civil rights, intentional infliction of emotional distress & negligence are specifically noted in the filing. If I'm reading this right, it's the second such suit brought against Bradford & the university, with one of the situations including a Softball student-athlete. Knowledge of the incidents by Softball HC Candrea are questioned, as is how athletics moved Bradford's housing assignment to be off-campus, but with other FB student-athletes. More. (link)
USA Today's Berkowitz continues keeping score of leadership contracts as results of the on-going FB season come in. The latest bonus notes: $25K for NC State FB HC Doeren with the Wolfpack's sixth win, $35K for AD Yow with bowl eligibility. Two-percent pool of base salaries for Wisconsin's staff with access to another bowl game, $15K for USF boss Strong as his Bulls moved to 6-0 with enough Ws to get to a bowl matchup. (link)
WDAY's McFeely chats with Youngstown State radioman Hannon on why the MAC makes more sense than the Missouri Valley for YSU. Hannon says back in the 90s, "There were many reasons why, but — this is a fact — both Akron and Kent State voted against Youngstown State getting in. [...] Kent State and Akron are both an hour up the road. There were concerns about recruiting. Would we take kids from them? There’s another reason, which is valid. Other than football, maybe our other programs and facilities weren’t quite up to par. I think that combination kept us out." As you may recall, Marshall, Northern Illinois & Buffalo all gained access when the Penguins were left out. Hannon continues to believe the MAC would be an ideal fit. (link)
One of the premier cases of how to build a dynamic women's pro sports franchise can be found in Portland with the NWSL's Thorns. Including here as there are likely takeaways that can be applied to the collegiate space, as well. One key takeaway is the commitment of resources to the Thorns by the same ownership group of the MLS' Timbers. Owner Paulson: "We’re not asking for charity here. When we ask people to allot their free time to the Timbers and the Thorns, it’s for no other reason than it’s what they’d prefer to be doing — and that’s the only reason you should ever ask people to do it." Piper Jaffray's Fall consumer insights project revealed info on the shoe & apparel preference of teens around the nation, which have already been reported in this space, but also their social media usage trends. Winner: Snapchat, which has grown from 11% in the Fall of 2015 to 47% as the preferred platform for teens. Loser: Twitter (from 21% to 7%). 6.1K teens involved in the survey, so a pretty solid sample size. (link); Speaking of Twitter, CEO Dorsey has once again committed to cleaning up abuse on his platform. "New rules around: unwanted sexual advances, non-consensual nudity, hate symbols, violent groups, and tweets that glorifies violence. These changes will start rolling out in the next few weeks. More to share next week." (link)
Also Noticed: Yesterday's Western Michigan-Akron game postponed until this afternoon after heavy rains flooded Waldo Stadium. (link); Quote of the Day comes from TCU FB HC Patterson: "Everybody's got knuckleheads, we just have less of them." (link); Oklahoma FB DC Stoops wasn't too pleased with negative commentary aimed his way after the Iowa State loss. During yesterday's presser after a victory over Texas, "People should probably understand that (how a team sticks together) a little better before they write slanderous stuff about you, you know what I mean? They had my back and that's the most important thing to me. Ok? See ya." (link); Memphis FB student-athlete Suttles dismissed from the team after being charged with rape. (link)
