A changing Chelmsford initiative
WHAT IS A FESTIVAL OF IDEAS?
It is a festival aimed at stimulating peoples minds and passions with an inspiring programme of events. Our futures are fraught with challenges but full of possibilities. The festival of ideas includes: 
Discussion & Debates: our city's heritage, arts & culture, local urbanism challenges & opportunities
Talks & Walks: giving Chelmsford's past a future
Arts & Crafts: from traditional to modern, including the application of technology 
Music & Musicians: celebrating the talent in our communities and bringing people together.
 
We believe in the power of education and ideas to transform lives & the value of engaging diverse audiences for a collaborative & dynamic city. We believe in working together for a better future. Together we can generate the ideas to address the challenges & realise the possibilities.

Your City-Chelmsford and Culture: What comes Next?
 Open debate with the speakers and the public on the following:
*Chelmsford’s future through the draft local plan 
*How we protect and develop the City’s Heritage with Nick Wickenden and Cllr Julia Jeapes
*A bid for U.K City of Culture status 2025?

“The Great War in the Air” by Ken Wisdom
A talk about some of the early actions, personalities, and the progression of the First World War.

The Future of Our City
Join leading local and national urbanism experts to consider the future of urban living in Chelmsford.
Delivered through a mix of presentations, debates, and discussions – supported by the Academy of Urbanism

12:00-15:30 – Mayor for the Day –the future presented by young people
15:30-17:30 – Visioning the City – with national thinkers, developers, and innovators
17:30-18:30 – Buffet – networking
18:30-20:00 – Academy of Urbanism talks – Open Debate with the speakers and the public

Thursday 19th October
Chelmsford Lives: remembering Chelmsford from the 1940s to the 1970s

Do you remember the end of the rationing? Do you recall your first day at school in Chelmsford? Did you use the corn exchange? Were you or your children born in St John’s hospital? Do you remember Bonds? In this afternoon discussion, the Chelmsford Lives team will play a selection of extracts from their interviews with local people backed by a variety of photos and you are welcome to add your recollections. (The event will not be recorded)

In times of great technological change, this debate will focus on what can a city like Chelmsford do to promote better mobility, reduced congestion, and improved well-being for its citizens

All day Sound Recording Workshop: ‘Sounds in the City: recording an urban environment’
In the morning session, you will learn how to record the sounds of urban environments, through a guided walk around Chelmsford. In the afternoon, an editing session at the Essex Record Office will introduce you to the basics of sound editing software. Both parts will include training by an audio engineer. The event will go ahead come rain or shine, so participants should wear comfortable footwear and suitable clothing.

School for Spooks
A funny storytelling, performing and writing workshop for 8 to 12 year olds
What do spooks say? What do you say to spooks? Why do spooks spook?  Listen, Perform and write – spooky stories, songs and poems.  Led by Martin Reed.

Saturday 28 October
Viell evening talk

Artist Nayan Kulkarni will explain the ideas, design development and complex technologies behind Viell, a new commission for Chelmsford to be installed in autumn 2018, and other artworks. Nayan Kulkarni will also be talking about his research and thinking behind the innovative and ambitious light art installations created over the last fifteen years including recent projects in Hull, City of Culture.
A temporary video and sound installation created by Nayan Kulkarni in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University School of Architecture students, which explores Chelmsford as a cinematic image space, will be on view during the evening talk.The event will be introduced by Frances Lord, Public Art Consultant.

Live Portrait Painting Competition
Open to professional local artists- First prize: £150

Taking place in High Chelmer: Each portrait artist will have 3 hours to paint 1 seated model, followed by Award.
The paintings will be on view to the passing public while painting. Please come and support the artists.

High Chelmer shopping centre, 10.00-15:00 (including 1 hr lunch BREAK)  £20 entrance fee per artist  (max 10 artists)
