Mission Minute

SST Reinforces La Salle's Culture of Support

With the first grading period behind us we find ourselves in the throes of another busy school year and facing a multitude of responsibilities, tasks and challenges. This is especially true for students still learning and struggling with how to balance, manage and prioritize the rigorous school work and high expectations that come with being at a college-prep school. This can be daunting for many of our young people and in many cases leads to plummeting grades and mounting stress. Yet effectively coping with the stressors around academics is key to thriving at La Salle.

One of the primary ways La Salle works to support students is through the Student Support Team. This team is a problem-solving group of administrators, counselors, teachers and other staffers that meets weekly to support students. The team identifies students struggling in several classes and then develops strategies to support the students, emphasizing ways we can help them be their best selves in the classroom. Then, the teachers of each struggling student arrive on campus early one day a week to meet with counterparts to share thoughts and brainstorm ideas that will hopefully lead to improving that student’s experience at La Salle.

As the administrator charged with overseeing our academic services, it is a source of great pride to be able to articulate the varied rigorous and excellent programs La Salle offers. But I am most proud of our exemplary efforts to support our students. By going above and beyond to ensure all students succeed, our teachers, counselors and staff members put our Lasallian mission into action and make intervention and support a regular and integral part of our academic culture.

Go Falcons!

Mario De Ieso
Vice Principal of Academics

LCAP Survey for Parents - Deadline Today

Attention Parents: Please share your voice and support La Salle by completing the LCAP survey. Our Lasallian district is coming to assess our Catholic and Lasallian programs from Nov. 7-9. An important part of this process is hearing from each constituency within the community ahead of their visit. We need a strong representative parent voice to ensure the district has quality information to base their commendations and recommendations on. The survey takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. Thank you in advance!

Parent Teacher Conferences - October 26

Mark Your Calendar!

Thursday October 26, 2017
1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

La Salle Parents: Please join us for Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, October 26.  This is an opportunity for you to speak with teachers about your son/daughter’s progress.

There is no need to schedule a specific time as teachers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. We ask that you limit your conference time from 3 to 5 minutes.  If you feel you need a longer conference, please make an appointment to meet with the teacher at another time.

We hope to see you there!

Right Turn Only - Parking Lot Change Next Week

Beginning Monday, we are experimenting with the following: on 8am start days next week, we will close off the left turn lane at the south exit to the parking lot from 7:45am - 8:00am. This means that if you drive in the main entrance at that time to drop your student off, you will need to exit only to the right onto Fuller Rd. Our hope is that this will ease congestion on Fuller Rd. Thanks for your cooperation!

Calendar Update - DLD Changed due to LCAP

The previously scheduled Digital Learning Day (DLD) during the week of Nov. 6-9th has been changed to accommodate the Lasallian Catholic Assessment Process (LCAP).

The new schedule for the week moves the DLD to Thursday instead of Monday.

Here is the schedule:
Monday Nov. 6th - Regular Straight 7 schedule
Tuesday Nov. 7th - Regular Tuesday Block
Wednesday Nov. 8th - Regular Late Start Wed. Block
Thursday Nov. 9th - Straight 7 Digital Learning Day (Students do not report to school for DLD’s, they work from home)
Friday Nov. 10th - No School, Veterans Day

Wreath Sale Orders Due October 24

The 2017 Annual Wreath Sale is happening now. Order forms are available in the Main Office and downloadable online. Local wreaths, swags, and garland can be ordered online. Wreaths or swags to be mailed, must be accompanied by a UPS Order form available online or in the Main Office. Again this year, OSAA teams that help drive sales will receive 70% of the profit from their sales. Please indicate which team you represent on your form. All orders are due by Tuesday, October 24th. Find more info and forms online at www.lsprep.org/wreath.

SENIOR PARENTS:

Just a handful of days left to get orders in and help provide support for the All Night Grad Party. In order to make this the best party ever, we need to do our part in fundraising to help pay for the party. We ask Senior/family to sell five (5) wreaths, garland or swags, locally made. It’s an easy ask and an easy sale – and a lovely way to announce and celebrate this most special season.

Order one of two ways: go online to www.lsprep.org/wreath and print out the order form and return it to the main office with the money collected, or scroll down and order them online. Be sure to note on the order form that it is for the Grad Party so we receive the credit. Make sure to note the name of the person picking up the wreath(s) on the order form to make for quick and easy pick up in November.  Last day to order is this coming Tuesday, October 24.

ONLY 1 WEEK LEFT TO ORDER!

Homecoming Dance Information

The 2017 Homecoming dance is tomorrow night in the La Salle Cafeteria. Dress code is semi-formal. If a student did not purchase a ticket during lunch this week they can purchase tickets for $20 at the door. Students who earned a free ticket through the Walkathon will have their names on a list at the door.

Harvard Model Congress Seeks Applicants

Harvard Model Congress 2018 is currently looking for more students to apply.  Juniors and Seniors will spend 5 nights in Boston simulating Congress with 1500 high school students from around the country.  Interested students can apply at https://goo.gl/forms/pioWj9TOZKpGJWgK2 or email Mr. Lanaghan (alanaghan@lsprep.org) by Monday, October 23.

Thank you for believing in La Salle!

We are truly blessed by the level of generosity our community demonstrated at the Believe Benefit Dinner.

Our mission is to provide access to an excellent Catholic education despite financial hardships. Your generosity directed $108,500 toward Dollars for Scholars, helping to make La Salle a joyful reality for more than 56% of our students.

Thank you for donations of $34,000 for Dare to Dream, a grant program in which students are empowered to learn by doing and innovating.

La Salle is distinct because, as a community, we believe in and hold dear the core tenets of our mission.  We are distinct because we Believe.

Dare to Dream Grant Apps Due October 30

Is your student creative, entrepreneurial, a designer, enterprising or innovative?  Does your student have an innovative idea that supports learning, a capstone project, service, or community building at La Salle?  If so, encourage your student to take a step toward by putting the idea into action by applying for a Dare to Dream grant.

These grants have already made an impact on La Salle and the world. For example, one of last year’s grants enabled students to bring a sustainable supply of clean water to a Nicaraguan village. Another grant allowed two students to open a non-profit business. The opportunities are limitless. For information, go to the
Dare to Dream page.

The deadline to submit a grant proposal is Oct. 30; find the
application online.

Each of these interconnected lives are dealing with one of the most beautiful and terrifying things of all.
Love.

Homecoming King crowned

Senior Harry Nguyen expresses surprise at being selected this year's Homecoming King by fellow Lasallians. The queen will be announced tonight.

Venture to Italy

Only 6 more spots remain for the Grand Tour of Italy that departs Portland eight months from now!

The June 2018 trip features 12 days of exploration of Rome, Assisi, Florence, Pompeii, and Venice, and other sites.

Participants will walk and eat, talk and fall silent in places of religious, historical, and artistic significance. Along the way, they'll hear stories from people intimately familiar with this ancient land.

International travel not only gives young people new perspectives on the world around them, said trip organizer Mr. Mac; it also gives them new perspectives on themselves and their unique place in the world.

Mr. Mac also said that, in addition to the short-term benefits, travel in high school makes students more competitive as college applicants because colleges and universities want to see students stretch themselves and rise to new challenges in new cultures.

Furthermore, students who travel with Mr. Mac are eligible for free high school or low-cost college credit and can request a college recommendation from Mr. Mac that highlights this experience.

For an itinerary, current pricing, and additional information about the trip, visit www.eftours.com. The tour number is 1931976YJ. You can also stop by Mr. Mac’s room 117 to pick up written materials.

Awards

La Salle is beginning a new tradition this year with respect to athletic success and notable achievements acquired throughout the year by all teams. It will be an awards ceremony similar to the ESPY’s and Oregon Sports Awards, but it will be unique to La Salle and possess a true Lasallian spirit.  On Wednesday, June 6th in the gymnasium the athletic office will be hosting this awards ceremony to celebrate significant achievements throughout the year amongst all teams and programs with special announcements, highlights, and guest speakers.

Each program is still encouraged to host an end of season banquet at the appropriate time in order to gather together, celebrate the season, distribute awards, award varsity letters and participation certificates, honor graduating seniors and thank parents for their support. These will be scheduled by coaches with parental support, so please be on the lookout for information regarding fall sport end-of-season celebrations.

Student Service in Action

Lasallians took a break from lunch Thursday to perform “60 Seconds of Service” by writing notes to Lot Whitcomb Elementary students who get weekend meals and snacks through the Backpack Buddies program. The messages, written on brown paper bags, included Halloween wishes and reminders to “Have a great day!”

Innovation and Design Center Now Open

La Salle's M.J. Murdock Innovation and Design Center opened this week. Located next to the Hamersly Library, the center features a large format printer, a 3-D printer, a laser cutter, sewing machines, a T-shirt printer, and more.

Students and staff have already fired up some of the equipment to make posters and 3-D chess pieces. Teachers plan to use the tools to make more educational tools, such as 3-D replicas of the brain.

Thanks to the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust for their support.
