About the Coalition

We are the Coalition for the Promotion of Behavioral Health. We are working together to meet the two goals and seven action steps of Unleashing the Power of Prevention, an initiative of the 12 Grand Challenges for Social Work, set forth by the American Academy of Social Work & Social Welfare. Our goal: to reduce behavioral health problems in young people by 20% in a decade.

INITIATIVES
1.  Collaborate with states to improve community-level prevention capacity and state-level backbone coordination and infrastructure

2. Promote and implement tested and effective prevention programs for parents through primary care settings

3. Work with universities, states, and communities to develop a behavioral health prevention workforce

COALITION ACTIVITIES
Coalition Members Present to a Legislative Commission on Behavioral Health Promotion and Upstream Prevention in Massachusetts

Jeff Jenson, J. David Hawkins, Laurel Leslie, and William Beardslee presented evidence pertaining to effective preventive interventions to members of the Prevent Promote Commission in Boston, MA on May 9, 2017. This special legislative Commission is charged with developing a new statewide plan to prevent behavioral health problems in young people. Information about the Commission is available here.


Congressional Briefing on Preventing Opioid Use

Richard F. Catalano presented Prevention: The Neglected Key to Stopping the Opioid Epidemic at a Congressional Briefing called Preventing Opioid Use Disorders: Community-Based Solutions That Work in Washington, D.C. on July 25, 2017. Watch the Congressional Briefing



Surgeon General’s Report on Facing Addiction in America
 
Richard F. Catalano presented a keynote address that summarized prevention content from the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health: Facing Addiction in America at the Annual Conference of the National Prevention Network. Anaheim, CA. September 12, 2017. Dr. Catalano was a Science Editor of the 2016 report.

Working with States to Improve Infrastructure for Prevention
 
Members of the Coalition for the Promotion of Behavioral Health continue to work with states and communities to improve infrastructure to deliver effective preventive interventions. Recent activities include:
  • Brian Bumbarger is working with the Colorado Evidence-Based Policymaking Working Group and the Colorado Implementation Collaborative to improve prevention infrastructure in the state. Brian and Jeff Jenson are also assisting the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health to improve infrastructure for OBH-funded programs in Colorado.
  • Jeff Jenson, Richard F. Catalano, and Leslie Leve met with Craig Povey and colleagues from the Utah State Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health and a group of interdisciplinary researchers in Utah in April 2017 to identify strategies to enhance collaboration between the state and the Society for Prevention Research. Dr. Leve is the current President of the Society for Prevention Research.
  • Brian Bumbarger is working with the Pew MacArthur Results First Initiative and Youth Policy Forum Children’s Cabinet Network to develop “convenings” with state policymakers that include a focus on the action steps in Unleashing the Power of Prevention. Brian and Jeff Jenson have also been participating in efforts to develop a Congressional Briefing on working with states to improve prevention infrastructure with the National Prevention Science Coalition and the American Psychological Association. Brian is also working with the National Prevention Science Coalition (NPSC) to adopt Unleashing the Power of Prevention as a framework for their state and local advocacy and policy efforts, and to connect members of the Coalition for the Promotion of Behavioral Health to NPSC’s Research to Policy Collaboration Project.
  • Jeff Jenson is on the Advisory Board of the Statewide Needs Assessment of Prevention for Substance Abuse being conducted by the Colorado Health Institute and the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health.
 

Healthy Parenting in Primary Care

J. David Hawkins continues to lead the Coalition’s interest in implementing and testing preventive interventions through primary care settings. Recent activities include:
  • J. David Hawkins led a full-day workshop at the Annual Conference of the Society for Prevention Research on May 30, 2017 in Washington D.C. that aimed to build capacity within prevention science to generate evidence demonstrating the efficacy and effectiveness of embedding parent-focused prevention within pediatric primary care settings. David also presented and participated in two other conference sessions addressing prevention in primary care.
  • Jeff Jenson and J. David Hawkins wrote a policy brief for the Grand Challenges for Social Work initiative called Provide Family-Focused Preventive Interventions to Children and Families through Primary Health Care. Read the brief 

Preparing the Workforce

Coalition members are participating in activities aimed at better preparing practitioners to work in behavioral health settings. Recent activities include:

  • Kimberly Bender, with Coalition Members Anne Williford, Patricia Kohl, Elizabeth Anthony, and Nicole Nicotera, developed four prevention training modules for social work graduate students. The modules were presented at a special session of the Annual Meeting of the Council on Social Work Education on October 19, 2017 in Dallas, TX. 
  • Jeff Jenson and Kimberly Bender presented Preparing the Workforce for Prevention Practice in Behavioral Health at a Prevention Research Forum sponsored by the Colorado Office of Behavioral Health on October 19, 2017 in Denver, CO.
