Next year is the 25^th International Association of People-Environment Studies Conference, which will be in Rome, in July 2018, ten years after the last trip to Rome, Italy. Following on from biannual conferences in Lund/Alnarp, Timisoara, Glasgow, and Leipzig, the IAPS theme for this silver anniversary conference is ‘Transitions to sustainability, lifestyles and human wellbeing: cultural, environmental and political challenges’. The Restorative Environments Network encourages participation at this event and a number of members have organised symposiums on restoration research. The deadline for symposium contributions is fast approaching (it was extended a week) and details on proposed symposiums by colleagues can be found in the special call below. There is also the opportunity to submit individual papers outside of these symposiums over the coming months. We look forward to hearing your exciting research ventures next summer.

Symposium on restorative processes in settings for work and education
People spend much of their waking times in places for work and education, and when there they perform a wide range of activities that engender needs for restoration. The options for restoration afforded in these different places remain understudied, but broader environmental sampling in this regard is just one way to extend inquiry on restorative environments. To understand what social and physical circumstances support restorative processes inside and outside of these settings, the study of restorative environments must first contend with the restoration needs that arise in different occupations. This means looking more carefully at the composite demands of the obligatory activities that people actually do over the course of hours, days and weeks. In this symposium we bring together a set of presentations that offer a variety of perspectives on restorative experiences that people can find at these places for work and education. The presentations address different kinds of environments and restorative options.
We invite our colleagues to send in proposals for presentation at this symposium, to be organized at the IAPs Conference in Rome, 2018. Please send you proposals to both of us this week, before October 22. Of course we are open to your questions. Sincerely, Henk Staats and Terry Hartig.
 
Restorative paths

We would like to invite you to contribute to a symposium on restorative paths held at the 25 IAPS Conference in Rome, Italy 2018. We hope to find inspiring presentations! The symposium is aimed at discussing recent research on trails, paths in different environments, routes which have been formed to reduce stress, enhance well-being, and support human health. Such paths could be established in various environments (forest, blue space, gardens, parks, city). It would be useful to learn about basic theoretical concepts and corresponding measures (e.g. perceived restorativeness, perceived sensory dimensions, perceived restorative outcome, but also about physiological approaches). We will try to address aspects of designing of restorative tracks, investigating different scene-types, and evaluating effects of trails. Contributions should discuss two aspects. First, the relationship with the environment (e.g. place attachment, connectedness with nature). Second, the interplay between effects of certain environments, and effects of interventions on-site (pedagogic, preventive, therapeutic).
In case you like to take part in the symposium please send an e-mail a.s.a.p to Renate Cervinka or Markus Schwab. Please give a preliminary title for your presentation and name of corresponding author.  Additionally, please choose one out of the given two following titles for the symposium or make an alternative suggestion; ‘Move on the restorative track!’ or ‘Follow the good-feel path!’

Environment and Behavior special edition
Deadline: 15th January 2018
Description: The journal Environment and Behavior are celebrating 50 years with a special issue. They have released a call for papers which fall into a number of categories, many of which relate to REN. They are: 1. Pro-environmental behaviors; 2. Outdoor urban environments (e.g., crime, walkability, wayfinding); 3. Built settings (e.g., offices, healthcare facilities, residences, restaurants); and 4. Natural environments (e.g., wild, managed, restorative, public or private). Please see their website for more details where you can download further details about the call.
