Potential temporary Trinity Center Walnut Creek location draws criticism

[East Bay Times | October 17] It’s been mostly good news over the past few weeks for Trinity Center, a nonprofit that provides meals, home and job placement help and other assistance for the homeless. Plans are moving ahead for Trinity’s Winter Evening Shelter’s second winter season at the local National Guard Armory.

St. Dorothy's Rest Update

So many have reached out during this difficult time in Northern California. St. Dorothy’s Rest was able to provide housing and meals for a few evacuees (including a cat) beginning last Monday until Thursday when they were able to return to their homes. An additional 15 people contacted St. Dorothy’s Rest and we were prepared to house them however they were not evacuated or found alternative arrangements.
Banner: In response to the wildfires, St. Dorothy's Rest is currently housing and providing meals for over thirty AmeriCorpsCaliforniaVolunteers, and AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) and FEMA NCCC members. For more information, read their report in the In the News section. Photo: Katie Evenbeck, Executive Director, St. Dorothy's Rest.

Hospitality for a Conference on the Move: PNEUMA 2017

Last Monday was the first day of the PNEUMA conference, and it was also the day the fires started. The Bishop’s Ranch was scheduled to host a 4-day ecumenical gathering of Christian educators. With many text, emails, and conference calls throughout Monday, the Bishop’s Ranch made it clear that coming north was not a safe option and so the committee reconstructed the conference in a new shape. The Rev. Matthew Woodward of Transfiguration, San Mateo offered his church as a meeting space for those arriving in town who needed a place to go.

Creating a Culture of Peace — Nonviolence Training, All Souls, Berkeley

DioCal is sponsoring Creating a Culture of Peace (CCP), a nonviolence training, on two Saturdays in November. The CCP program has offered this spiritually-grounded nonviolence training for dioceses, congregations, seminaries and community groups across the country for fifteen years. In a time of mass shootings, racism, deepening inequality, the alt-right, environmental destruction, and threats to immigrants, we can join the Jesus Movement by developing a deeper understanding of nonviolent change and honing our skills to be more effective in our communities and the public square. This training urges respectful engagement with opponents, instead of confrontation that polarizes and demonizes. It embraces two forms of active nonviolence: Constructive Nonviolence, which compels us to maximize our time and effort to create a just and peaceful alternative culture with new relationships, practices, and institutions, and also Nonviolent Resistance, which challenges us to protest injustice and oppression and to protect those oppressed. Facilitators will draw upon the wisdom and experience of participants. The training will include thought-provoking exercises, storytelling, meditation, ritual, small group discussions, brainstorming, role plays, and skill training and practice. Participants will explore violence and nonviolence, analyze social change and community-building, and plan concrete projects. They will discover their own personal and group power to implement nonviolent changes they desire.

When: Two Saturdays, November 11 and 18, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day

Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry Host Revival: Called to be . . . A Safe Place for All of God’s People

The Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin and the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church are co-sponsoring a three-day Episcopal Revival in November, with an emphasis on sharing a bold, inclusive vision of faith in action. The weekend features a variety of public events and preaching by the Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry, whose office is organizing Episcopal Revivals across America and beyond. Presiding Bishop Curry has stirred the whole church to take its place in The Jesus Movement: the community of people who follow Jesus and form loving, liberating, and life-giving relationships with God, their neighbors, and the environment. Episcopalians in San Joaquin are following that call and opening their hearts, minds, and doors to the concerns of the Central Valley, especially people who feel vulnerable and unwelcome in today’s cultural climate.

Bach’s Powerfully Affirming Congregational Voice: Rhetoric in Bach’s Early Cantatas, Berkeley

Offered by the Episcopal Campus Ministry to UC Berkeley: Jeffrey Thomas, conductor of the American Bach Soloists will offer a talk, using examples of cantata movements in which Bach embedded chorale texts and melodies to represent what seems to be the ultimate distillation of scriptural messages, as they summarize both that content and the high-quality (non-biblical) texts that illuminate the readings for any given day. The straightforwardness and the single and focused messages that are inherent in the chorale texts really represent the tremendous power of congregational understanding and absorption of Lutheran dogma.
