Celebrating Simchat Torah
MJDS students learned about Simchat Torah with materials, stories, dances, and classic songs such as "Sisu V'Simchu". The groups discussed at their levels the meaning and actions behind restarting the Torah every year and celebrated Kabbalat Chag with joy and excitement. Shalhevet students put their knowledge to the test with a Simchat Torah Jeopardy game designed by their classmates, challenging themselves with tricky questions and gaining new knowledge overall.
On Wednesday the whole school was invited to Beth David for a special presentation on the Torah. Michael Rubin, Beth David Ritual Director and MIJDS Middle School teacher, discussed the amount of effort and rules that goes into creating a Torah scroll, how Simchat Torah plays an important role in uniting the Jewish people and many more interesting facts about the holiday. The children were able to examine actual Torah scrolls to identify their similarities and differences, and discovered that even when there were superficial variations, the content is always the same no matter what community it belongs to. At the end everyone participated in model "Hakafot", in which they marched in a circle singing songs to celebrate the Torah. It was a wonderful opportunity to ask questions, learn new facts, and strengthen their understanding of Simchat Torah.
See the children's interest and attention in these photos.
