Book Signing THIS Saturday!

Join us at The Market on Oak for a book signing with author Jill Burleson as she releases her new book Grassy Creek. An excerpt from her book reads "Luke Sparks is a pediatric oncologist determined to find the cure for leukemia. However, this dream is elusive, and he fears he has lost his passion for medicine, his purpose for living, and has failed every patient he has not been able to save. He even contemplates if his own life is worth living. But that thought is thwarted by Joe, the eight-year-old patient he is taking with him for some time away from the cancer treatments, as Luke is returning to his childhood home of Grassy Creek, in the mountain town of Spruce Pine, North Carolina. He is seeking a respite and hopes of rekindling his passion, his purpose, and his life. Back home, Grassy Creek and rain, perhaps healing rain, stir his memory, and he returns to the summer of 1962, when he was fifteen and his dream began."

Jill Burleson is a native North Carolinian. She was raised in Charlotte, but her roots are embedded in Spruce Pine, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and it is here she considers her spiritual home. She began writing in grade school and dreamed of writing a Southern fiction novel based in the mountains. She entered the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the Amy Charles Writing Scholarship and went on to graduate with a degree in her other passion of nursing, both with a BSN and MSN. She currently works at Duke University Medical Center in the oncology department as a nurse-practitioner for bone marrow and stem cell transplant. It is the melding of these two passions that has led to Grassy Creek, her first novel.

Book Signing with Author Pat Turner Mitchell

Author Pat Turner Mitchell will be at the Market on Oak on Saturday, October 28th from 1 pm-3 pm to sign her latest book “A Mountain To Climb”.

Pat Turner Mitchell narrates the story of her parents and their history in A Mountain to Climb, a sequel to Mitchell's first book, Lifted to the Shoulders of a Mountain. This second installment begins with the story of her father's family and his early life and then transitions to her parents meeting. When the young couple marries they are unprepared for the changes thundering toward them in their world. With information gleaned from family letters and records, A Mountain to Climb shares the backgrounds of David and Edith, the consequences of choices made, and how they move forward with their children during World War II and after.

Pat Turner Mitchell is the author of “Lifted to the Shoulders of a Mountain,” a tribute to her maternal grandparents. The sequel, “A Mountain to Climb,” is about her parents and their families as they meet, marry, and live during World War II and after. She has also enjoyed writing articles for the local newspapers in Burnsville and Spruce Pine.

Pat grew up in Valdese, NC, visiting her maternal grandparents in Little Switzerland, NC often. Their home and surroundings became her happy place where she returned often. She has a love of books, writing, and learning about ancient history through reading and travel. She enjoys living near her ‘happy’ place in these beautiful mountains.

Winter Wrap Up at Mica Gallery

"Mica, Bakersville’s contemporary craft gallery, wraps up the year with its highly anticipated celebration of wearable fiber. A gallery tradition, will be on display from Wednesday, October 18, through December 31."

Volunteer Opportunity

Dear Habitat for Humanity Friends and Supporters:

We continue to make great progress on Mitchell - Yancey Habitat home build number 23 in Ledger. The work site is right down the road from Mitchell High School on Forest Service Drive around back of the EMS building.

Thanks to Marvin Walker and the men at Spruce Pine United Methodist, we quickly and professionally put down the vapor barrier and wire mesh last weekend. This Saturday, Oct 21, we are all set to remove our wood forms and put down plate for the wall. Basically, lots of screw gun work for a team of 4-5. Moving forward, it looks like we will be erecting the "green" Eco-panel walls and roof trusses around the second week of November. This will be the first time Eco-panels have been utilized in a Habitat build in either Mitchell or Yancey county, so it will be a interesting experience for all of us. Work days are generally 9am-2pm, but we'll take as many hours as you can serve.

We are also in need of a team of four or five people to help with our annual mail out any day from now until Oct 25. Specifically, we have a twelve page letter that needs to be stuffed into 350 envelopes and the address stickers attached. This activity will take about three hours and needs to be done inside working on a couple large tables.
If your church, organization, or you personally would like to volunteer this fall, or you can provide lunch on work days, or help out at ReStore in Spruce Pine, please reply to this email or call:
