Providing Educational School Gardens on Maui

In this Issue:

"Ah! A Taste of Heaven!"

Many people don't realize how disconnected today's young people are from their food sources. When students first enter our program, we ask them where fruits and vegetables come from. Often they say, "from the grocery store."

Our donors and volunteers are helping to change that.
We have exciting news about how you can help! A very generous donor has stepped forward to offer a 100% match for any donation of $250 or more, up to $20,000, now through the end of November! Your gift will instantly be doubled, increasing the impact we have with students, as we teach them how to build healthy soil, work with natural life cycles, and grow food they can eat.

After participating in our program, when we talk about a fruit or vegetable, students can tell us how it was grown, and how to make their favorite garden snacks. One student recently tasted a cherry tomato from the garden, and said:

"Ah! A taste from Heaven!"

Consider making donation and help Grow Some Good continue this positive trend for our island keiki. Contributions are easily facilitated through our website. Your donation makes a positive impact on the future of our students, and our entire community.

Happening in the Gardens

Meet our staff! We have several new team members; each month we will feature a Garden Coordinator and the schools they support.

Introducing....

Cynthia Cordova, Garden Coordinator
Pu'u Kukui and Waihe'e Elementary Schools

The garden program at Pu'u Kukui covers all grade levels (K-5), and kids are in garden class every week for one semester. It is unique in that teachers don't come to garden with the students, so Cynthia coordinates all aspects of planning and managing the class. Pu'u Kukui is our newest school and is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) focused school. That makes it easy and fun to incorporate STEM topics into the garden program.

At Waihe'e, Cynthia is building on the work of the previous garden coordinator, Kellie Penman. Here the garden program also has a STEM focus. Cynthia loves it there-- "Just 5 miles away from town and it feels like Hana."

Cynthia has BA Degrees in Agriculture, Food and Sustainability and in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Production. She started with Grow Some Good in 2016.

Cynthia says:

My goal for the gardens this year is to grow more, harvest more, and share more.

What I'm really looking forward to: Teaching in the shade structure that was built over the summer at Pu’u Kukui. When it rains or when it’s really hot the students now have a place to sit and take a break.

I’m looking forward to being the coordinator for a new school. I’m excited to meet the community at Waihe’e and grow together.

My favorite thing about working with kids is: teaching them the power of growth and watching them grow with their plants.

My favorite thing about gardens is: how it creates a sense of community. It brings people together to work for a greater good.

My favorite fruits that grow on Maui are lilikoi and mango.

Lesson from the Garden: How Plants Breathe
Fill a glass jar with water. Select a large leaf from a plant or tree nearby, drop it into the jar and screw the lid on.  Place the jar in a sunny spot. After an hour, ask students to look in the jar and report what they see inside.

What would happen if we held our breath, underwater, at the pool and then let out air? Bubbles! Read more...

MSGN School Garden Tour
Maui School Garden Network, coordinated by Lehn Huff, is hosting a Central Maui SchoolGarden Tour of four schools: Wailuku El, Pu’u Kukui El, Pomaika’i El, and Kahului El. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn how each of these school garden programs has dealt with challenges and successes in its growth process, and how they have all been able to influence healthy eating, career choices and school curriculum integration with students.

After the tour we'll have a garden-inspired lunch made with produce from school gardens and local farmers. This year the tour is being offered free of charge to principals, teachers, and community volunteers who support school gardens on Maui and Lana’i.

Saturday November 18th
8:30am - 1:45pm
Meet At:  Pomaika’i Elementary School, 4650 S Kamehameha Ave, Kahului.
We'll meet in the parking lot by the cafeteria at the far end of the school buildings.
(Look for the check-in table there)
RSVP: Email Lehn Huff at msgn@hawaii.rr.com by Wednesday, November 15th.

Many Mahalos!

For the second year in a row, Grow Some Good has received a $2,500 grant from the
Clif Bar Family Foundation. We’re grateful for their continued support and confidence in our programs.

We’re also proud to announce Grow Some Good recently received a grant award of $5,000 from McInerny Foundation, one of the largest charitable foundations in the state of Hawaii. The Foundation supports programs in the areas of education, social services, arts and culture, health, and the environment.

Funds from both of these organizations will support our very important garden educator team, providing training and resources so they can excel at implementing school garden programs in our partner schools.

Thank you for Dining at these Great Restaurants!
Thank you for helping Grow Some Good raise funds by dining at Nick's FishmarketSarento's on the BeachManoli's Pizza Company, and Son'z Steakhouse. Each restaurant donated $1 for every sale of a special dish they had featured in this fundraiser during the month of September. Mahalo to these restaurants, and thank you to the diners who helped raise almost $700!
