HONOURS & AWARDS

Congratulations to UTM's Career Centre team—a new study from the Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling named UTM as one of the top Canadian post-secondary institutions for best practices in career service delivery! The UTM team was lauded for outstanding partnerships, outreach and programming designed to help students find employment. 

The Master of Science in Sustainability Management Program has won 2017 Global Compact Network Canadian Sustainability Development Goal Award. Professor Shashi Kant and placement and employment relations officer Claire Westgate accepted the award, which recognizes the outstanding efforts of Canadian organizations in adopting and implementing sustainability development goals set by the United Nations.

National Geographic, Motherboard  and The Daily Mail were among the dozens of international publications covering new research by Professor Kent Moore of the Department of Chemical & Physical Sciences. Moore and his team recently discovered a mysterious massive hole in the sea ice around Antarctica.
 
Archaeology News Network featured research by Assistant Professor Carrie Fulton of the Department of Historical Studies. Fulton spent the summer studying ancient trade routes off the coast of Cyprus.
The San Franciso Chronicle featured a new book on Iranian Americans and the politics of race by Assistant Professor Neda Magbouleh of the Department of Sociology.
 
Rocky Mountain Outlook covered research by Assistant Professor Igor Lehnherr of the Department of Geography. Lehnherr was part of a team studying ice core samples on Ellesmere Island in Canada’s high Arctic.
 
The National Post and The Conversation featured an op-ed by sociology Josée Johnston on sex, beauty and the legacy of the late Hugh Hefner.
Research by assistant professor of sociology Ellen Berrey was featured in a New Yorker essay on the limits of diversity. Berrey’s latest book investigated the effects of employment discrimination law on issues of inequality in the United States.
 
Research by sociology professor Melissa Milkie on the relationship between martial bliss and the division of household labour was covered by several publications, including the Sydney Morning Herald and The Conversation.
The Atlantic interviewed Assistant Professor Daniel Elam of the Department of Historical Studies about Dhan Gopal Mukerji, the first person of colour to win the Newbery Medal for children’s literature.

Aboriginal Elder-in-Residence Cat Criger was featured in Beach Metro and The Conversation speaking about the acknowledgement and inclusion of Indigenous culture.

Congratulations to Team UTM and all who ran, walked, supported or donated to the annual Run for the Cure event. UTM raised a whopping $26,000 for breast cancer research, shattering the goal of $15,000 and winning Top Online Fundraiser and Post-Secondary Team Challenge Awards in our region.
