A NOTE FROM FRED

With the exception of President Trump, it is widely agreed that the Russians intervened in the 2016 presidential election with false, misleading, and manipulative information designed to undermine the election, damage our democracy, and benefit the Trump candidacy.

Three congressional committees are currently investigating Russia’s activities.

The Senate Intelligence Committee appears to be the most bipartisan and making the most serious effort to uncover just what Russia did.

The House Intelligence Committee is hampered by a “recused” rogue Chair, Devin Nunes (R-CA), who keeps sticking his nose back in the investigation and whose main goal appears to be to defend Trump. The Senate Judiciary Committee is headed by Chuck Grassley (R-IA), whose efforts have raised serious questions about whether he is investigating the Russian efforts or investigating the Justice Department investigation of the Russian efforts.

Meanwhile, with the midterm elections already underway, we have made little progress in preventing the Russians from a repeat performance in 2018.

New information has begun to come out about how Russia used Facebook, Google, Twitter, and other platforms to inject their deceptions into our election. Ironically, these platforms are best equipped to help the country stop Russia’s destructive efforts, but they have been reluctant, to date, to help Congress figure out how to expose and prevent these activities.

In the end, the solution to these complicated challenges will require legislation. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Mark Warner (D-VA) are expected to introduce a bill that would start to address the Russian cyber-invasion.

This bill will signal the beginning of a major effort in Congress to keep Russia and any other country out of our elections.

FACT OF THE WEEK

When VP Pence walked out of the 49ers-Colts game on Sunday because some players took a knee during the National Anthem, his act – assumed by many to be a pre-planned political stunt – cost taxpayers more than $242K in travel expenses alone.

Now Trump’s reelection campaign is capitalizing on the walkout, asking for campaign donations in an email sent to donors the next morning.
