Planning for Halloween?
Village Trick or Treat Schedule –
Tuesday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 8 p.m.
|
|
Official Vernon Hills Trick or Treat hours will be on Halloween (Tuesday, October 31 from 4 p.m.to 8 p.m. Please use extra caution when driving through the neighborhoods, as lots of folks will be out and about. The Vernon Hills Police Department reminds kids to 1) never enter a person's house unless you are with a known adult who accompanies you; 2) never accept rides from a person you don't know; 3) wait to eat your treats until you get home and an adult has a chance to check them and throw away unwrapped items, fruit, etc. As always, don't hesitate to call 911 if you see any person, vehicle or situation that looks suspicious or out-of-place. More safety tips are found on the VHPD.com Halloween Safety webpage. Have a happy Halloween!

Here are some of the new business permits that have come through Village Hall:
Keep in mind that shopping in town generates sales tax for our Village – and that sales tax funds the bulk of Village services. (The Village of Vernon Hills collects no property tax from residents or businesses.)

Next Meeting is October 17
The next meetings of the Vernon Hills Village Board are planned for October 17, November 7, November 21 and December 5 (only one meeting in December). Meetings begin at 7 p.m. and are held at Village Hall, 290 Evergreen Drive at Route 45. Residents are encouraged to attend meetings, as well as view them on the Village YouTube Channel and on Cable Access. Agendas and minutes are posted online.
A Few Items of Interest...
- Short-term Rentals Still Prohibited: During the October 3 Vernon Hills Village Board meeting, Trustees upheld their support for the current ordinance prohibiting short-term rentals within the Village, the most common type being Airbnb home rentals. The Board directed staff to identify and send cease-and-desist letters to any residents known to be engaged in such activity. Letters will outline the current ordinance, the violation, and the possibility of fines of anywhere from $100 to $1000 per day for each incident. The Board encourages residents to contact Village staff if they have questions or concerns about such activities. For more information, contact Building Commissioner Michael Atkinson at MikeAt@vhills.org or 847-367-3700. (10-3-2017 Board Meeting)
- Remaining Construction of Port Clinton Place/Route 45 Still In Play: On October 3, developer Sy Taxman addressed the Board regarding the remaining undeveloped portion of Port Clinton Place, located at Milwaukee and Route 45 in a Village TIF District. Taxman expressed concern that the approved 80-unit multi-family high rise planned for that parcel would no longer be economically viable due to higher financing costs, higher construction costs, and lower demand. He and the board discussed the idea of changing that development to 18 town homes, to which the board expressed some favorable response. Taxman Corporation will go forward with planning, will stay in communication with staff, and is scheduled to appear before the Village Board on November 7 with an updated proposal. (10-3-2017 Board Meeting)
- Target Exterior Renovations Approved: Representatives of Target Corporation presented artwork depicting proposed updates to Target, including wood-type panels wrapping around the top edges of building, as as well as re-worked landscape. Target also shared that interior renovations are in the works. (10-3-2017 Board Meeting)
- Countryside Fire Earns 2nd Place Finish: Countryside Fire thanks all who supported them in their efforts to earn a $3000 grant through the Step Up and Stand Out program. CFPD came in second in the nation, and earned a variety of Kidde smoke detectors and life safety items. Thank you for your support. (www.countrysidefire.com)
- Planning Continues on Hawthorn D73 Kindergarten Center: Representatives from Hawthorn, the Park District and the Village continue to work to support proposed construction of a new Kindergarten classroom center adjacent to the Park District Sullivan Center. (www.hawthorn73.org)
- Openings on Police Pension and Zoning Board of Appeals: The Village is looking for residents willing to serve. For information, check last month's eNewsletter or contact Lynn DeAnda.
- Vernon Hills Park District Playground Improvements: The Park District is preparing to expand the south side of the Kids' Castle playground in Deerpath Park. Work includes excavation, installation of a dragon play tunnel, pouring of additional play surface, and landscaping. The Park District is also preparing to open the new Hawthorn Club playground in the next few weeks. (www.vhparkdistrict.org)
