When Jesus was born, his mother announced that “God has filled the hungry with good things.”
Yesterday, congregations of different denominations celebrated Bread for the World Sunday because that promise has only partly come to pass.
"Bread for the World is a non-partisan, Christian citizens' movement in the United States to end hunger. We know that people who are hungry don’t get enough calories or nutrients on a daily basis. They may have problems with access to food, or be described as “food insecure.” The main cause of hunger is simply poverty. In relatively wealthy countries like ours, the main group suffering hunger are children: About 20 percent of children in developed countries live in poverty (http://www.dw.com/en/unicef-20-percent-of-children-in-developed-countries-living-in-poverty/a-39259716). In poor countries, it can be as much as 70 percent of the population.
Bread for the World is committed to organizing Christians and other concerned citizens to end hunger by the year 2030. They ask us to be involved through our prayers, our giving, and our activism. Ending world hunger may sound like an impossible goal, but there has been dramatic progress on lowering hunger in the past two decades. Between 1990 and 2010, people working together cut the world poverty rate in half.
I confess to being a skeptical donor, and I always check my charities out at Charity Navigator. This is a screening website which reviews and rates charities, so you can trust that your donations are being used as you intend.
Bread for the World is not actually a charity — it is an advocacy organization. You can get involved through community action, through prayer, through a hunger program, through learning and teaching about hunger — its effects and its causes — and finally, through influencing policymakers. Bread for the World is active in our area; you can learn more at http://www.bread.org.

Tanzania
Our Mission of the Month for October is Tanzania — the Greater Milwaukee Synod partners with the Meru Diocese (which is like a synod) in this country. Our offerings will go to the local hospital run by the Meru Diocese. It is starting a nursing program to meet two objectives: It will provide a career path for students in the health care industry, and also provide nurses to work at the hospital. The proposed program would be similar to a diploma program in the U.S.

Small savings add up
Did you know our office manager Lynn Wesolowski regularly reviews our church bills and seeks ways to save money for the congregation? This is what she’s accomplished this year:
New copy machine: old lease payment $246/month, new lease payment $183/month = annual savings of $756
Discontinue donation envelope mailing to homes: annual expense $948, quote from Village Graphics: $187 = annual savings of $761
Discontinue floor mat service: annual expense $1,916, purchased floor mats for $910.00, first year savings $1,006, second year savings $1,916
Change frequency of trash & recycling pickup: Current pick-up every two weeks $367/month, new pick up every three weeks $304/month, annual savings of $756
2017 total annual savings $3,279
Call Committee
The Call Committee has started interviews with candidates for our pastor position.
Please keep them in your prayers!
College Student Addresses
FYI will be creating care packages to send to all of COR’s college students in November. Please send names and addresses to Tiffany Kollmeyer or the church office.
Hiring Nursery Care Giver
We are hiring a nursery caregiver for Sunday mornings. The nursery caregiver serves the church’s mission by providing nurturing and safe care for the babies and toddlers of COR and our guests. If you know someone who would like more information, please have him or her contact Lynn in the church office for a job description. Please email office@churchoftheresurrection.org attention: Lynn.
Thanks Joe!
Our custodian, Joe Michalski, has resigned this week. If you see him, please take a minute to say goodbye and thank you. He was finding two jobs and college too much to keep up with.
We already have seven applicants and expect a few more resumes in the days to come. If you are able to contribute volunteer hours to cleaning the church, please contact Randy Kohn at randykohn192@gmail.com

Volunteers
We are in need of volunteers to help make the Reformation Fair a success. If you are able to volunteer before or on the day of October 22, Donna Rooney would love to hear from you. Please contact her either via email d3rooney@gmail.com or (262) 367-6382 to find out how you can assist.
Thank you for your consideration!
Business Trick or Treat
This year's Hartland Business trick or treat will be on Thursday, October 26 from 6-8 pm. Church of the Resurrection will once again have a table in front of Village Graphics. We are asking for donations of candy, which can be dropped off in the blue bin in the Narthex. We will also need volunteers from the 6th grade Confirmation class to pass out the candy on the 26th. Parents are encouraged to attend with their student. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Schulte.
Thank you!
A number of volunteers cleaned, painted and provided food on Saturday, September 16.
The school area, however, is not quite ready for new tenants. A project list is posted on the glass doors. If you are able to stop by this week and complete a project, please mark it off. Painting supplies and many cleaning supplies are provided. But remember, we changed the locks… so make sure you either come when the building is open, or stop by for a key.

A Free Library at COR:
People in Martin Luther's day experienced great progress when Johannes Gutenberg's printing press helped spread literature to the masses for the first time in an efficient and durable way. Just imagine where we'd be today without the written word! In honor of the Reformation, COR has installed a Little Free Library just outside the office entrance door. Please feel free to take a book and to leave a book or two for all to enjoy! Many thanks to Pat Faherty for donating the library and to Mike Palovcsik and Jim Daniels for installing it
On Sunday, Oct. 22, our children will be attending a Reformation Fair during their Sunday school time. Activities will include learning about Martin Luther, creating banners for our Reformation worship, making their own set of doors to post their Theses, crafting Luther's Rose, baking pretzels and enjoying some root beer! Dr. Luther himself is also scheduled to make an appearance. All are welcome to join us following the second service in the Fellowship Hall.
"Living Voices of the Gospel" - Reformation Hymn Festival
Our Sanctuary Choir will be participating in a Hymn Festival in commemoration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation on Oct. 22 at 4 pm at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Waukesha. The inspiration for the festival stems from Martin Luther's belief that music is a living voice of the Gospel. Dr. Michael Burkhardt will be leading the festival, which will include several hymns in a variety of styles along with inspirational readings. The event is free to attend and donations will be collected for the Hebron House of Waukesha. We hope you can join us!

SOPHIA Movie Night
Acclaimed director Ava DuVernay’s documentary “13th” will be shown on Monday October 30 at 7 pm at Church of the Resurrection. DuVernay, known for directing the civil rights drama “Selma", continues her push for equality in this documentary by shining a harsh light on the truth. Named after the 13th constitutional amendment, which abolished slavery except as “punishment for crime,” the documentary uses archival footage and expert commentary to make the case that slavery hasn’t disappeared – it’s evolved into our modern system of mass incarceration. The film charts the explosive growth in America’s prison population, exploring the myriad reasons why so many people, many of them non-violent drug offenders, are crowding our prisons. DuVernay uses the 13th amendment as a jumping-off point to show how after the Civil War, African-Americans were arrested en masse and used to replace the free labor of the slavery system. This, the film alleges, led to a “mythology of black criminality” which has persisted to this day, and helps explain the fact that, according to the film, even though the U.S. has five percent of the world’s population, it has 25 percent of the world’s prisoners – over 2.3 million people. Please join SOPHIA members in an objective analysis and discussion about this issue, and how as people of faith we are called to respond.
Christmas Donation Needed at Shorehaven in Oconomowoc
Shorehaven’s goal this Christmas is to make sure all residents receive a Christmas gift, especially if they have no family or friends to buy them one. Following is a Christmas Gift Suggestion List, should anyone want to gift a resident this Christmas. It would mean a tremendous amount to both them and us to meet this need. We ask that unwrapped gifts be delivered on or before December 15. All gifts will be wrapped here and distributed on Christmas Eve. Should you have any questions, please feel free to call Nina Birschback, Shorehaven Campus Lifestyle Coordinator at 262-244-6560 or email nbirschback@lho.org.
